A group of good fellows all employed at jobs which pay living wages, all anxious to pass along whatever of jpy, know¬ ledge, experience and purpose they themselves have accumu¬ lated; all anxious and determined to serve their day and gen¬ eration, have decided to publish a series of Wealth and Wel¬ fare studies which shall enable the other fellow to catch their point of view. > Wha.t is success? Every person desires enough of the things of this world and pleasant relations with his fellow men. To attain those things is success. Fame is not success, but it is sometimes the recognition- by your fellows that you have done Something which they feel or know to be difficult to do, hence they praise you for the doing. Wealth is not suc¬ cess, but the ownership of wealth makes it possible to put into operation the schemes one plans in his mind with little or no fear of the outcome. Does not such a removal of fear of fail¬ ure take away from the joy of the achievement. JVtere owner¬ ship of wealth without consequent service to humanity is miserly and has not been known to bring aught but fear oi losing the wealth itself. To win a prize from competitors is but a form of success, for if you think of the misery caused to the losers it will great¬ ly reduce your own pleasure at winning. Power to control men is success only if one is filled with the highest sense of the welfare of the people over whom that power is exercised. Mere power which is used arbitrarily and according to the whim of fancy of the individual can not bring true success, for it breeds despotic and overbearing manners in it's wake, and one is Soon conspired against, hated and probably killed by those whom he continues to misgovern or mistreat. There arb in the world only things and people, hence $uc-. cess must follo'w !from our dealings'' with'^hem. There are people over the world, in all the desirable places of the earth, hence we must either displace people already there or induce them to give to us their places. The aims to supply these necessary goods, to change their forms and to distribute and exchange them among all the peoples of the world, gives rise to production, manufacture, trade, and commerce. Success is to be secured in mastering any one of those lines of necessary endeavor, in simplifying them, in spreading knowledge of their results and in facilitat¬ ing them in every way. Laws beneficial and just must be enacted, machinery must be installed, invented and operated, goods must be carried with greater swiftness, safety and cheapness, lines and methods of transportation must be opened and developed as well as improved where they now exist, money must be properly evaluated and the means of exchange between peoples of remote districts and different languages and customs must be stabilized and simplified. Every means and agency of our complex modern life is calling for improvement, development, understanding. There is success awaiting any person and every person who will and does make these improvements or who even contributes to them. In the relations among men things are equally promising. No person may take a casual glance at the condition of the world today, or at the condition of the people in any section of the world, no not even in our own land of plenty and oppor¬ tunity, without seeing where improvements in our human re¬ lations are needed. Capital and labor, farmers and manufacturers, railway men and their executives, statesmen and their constituents, the store keepers and the wholesalers, the city dwellers and the suburbanites, the people who live in the interior of the lands and those who live on the coasts, all feel some sort of hostil¬ ity to the other group and yet all are mutually dependent. Social agencies of every sort, religious institutions of new and modified character, education that does what it ought, medical and surgical skill greatly improved and more readily available to all, healthier children with opportunities for child life, motherhood and family building that is favored. In short, every social relation is calling for improvement, modification, development. Success awaits those whose inclinations lead them into any of these fields and who can and will lend to them new light,, new aid and inspiration. 5 It will be seen that there is no line of effort closed to those who are willing to follow the directions of this series of Wealth and Welfare, and who so believe in themselves as to warrant the further study of these and succeeding pages. The men behind these studies have done some of the things they describe and are doing others. They have known men and women who have done these things and know some who are now doing them. They are telling what they believe. What you do depends not upon your faith in them but upon your faith in yourself, your own powers, for truly, THE KING¬ DOM OF THE FUTURE IS WITHIN YOU. Read, think, act. IRONQUILL. WINNING SUCCESS. By William J. Thompson. SECRETS OF SUCCESS Within you are powers of success and achievement. With¬ in you are great mental and spiritual forces which if controlled and skillfully used, lead on to success and fortune. The key to unlock this power is education, or the unfoldment and prop¬ er development of these inner forces, through knowledge and applied physchology. Thought is a creative force which can control events, change conditions and determine the fate of races and nations. Personality is a force which can overcome obstacles and win friends, fame and fortune. Will power is a force that enables man to develop his inner forces, his ment¬ al faculties, courage, concentration, character and skill in the use of the body, mind and soul. Thought, personality and will power are forces to be used by the individaul to achieve great¬ er success, happiness and larger life. Service is the measure of real success, service to others, to your nation, to the world. SUCCESS DEFINED. . Succes may be defined as making the most of one's endow¬ ments, opportunities and life. Natural endowments> present opportunities, and time are your assets with which to achieve the desired result, be it wealth, fame, a professional skill, or power. To succeed, excel in your chosen field. By endowments is meant health and strength of body, men¬ tal and emotional traits, character and spiritual make-up. This includes your physical fitness, will power, courage, power of concentration, self-reliance, ambition, moral and intellect- 6 a] abilities, as well as general mental attitude toward God and Universal Laws. All these qualities of body, mind and soul go to determine personality, the greatest asset in winning success. Personality is the combination of the physical, men¬ tal and spiritual qualities in the individual which make him a d:stinct person from all others in potential power to achieve a place in the world and do his part in the World's w;ork. Per¬ sonality has power for good or evil, for weal or woe, depend¬ ing on the development of the positive or negative qualities of the individual. By positive qualities are meant those emo¬ tional, mental and spiritual traits that are constructive and productive of success and any good results; by negative quali¬ ties are meant destructive habits of emotion, thought and soul which are destructive of success, happiness or character. Faith, self confidence, courage, accuracy, honor and efficiency are positive qualities which the individual should develop be¬ cause they make him or her, greater and surer of success. Fear, ignorance, jealousy, envy, inaccuracy and doubt are negative qualities which destroy character, success and happi¬ ness. HOW TO WIN SUCCESS. Right thinking, right feeling, right action, lead inevitably to successful achievement. Proper preparation, proper tools and equipment and doing one's best while striving to excel and surpass all former success will help one to achieve one's ambition. Taking into consideration your present endow¬ ments, resources and training, you should choose after care¬ ful, deliberate thought, the ideal of the success you. wish to attain. Consider your mental, physical and spiritual make-up, your strong and weak points as needed to develop the mental ability, endurance, skill and superior success you desire to at¬ tain in your chosen field. Then with the chosen ideal fixed in the conscious and sub-conscious Self, develop ability, char¬ acter, technique, and ethics of the leaders of that field of en¬ deavor. Concentration, constant application and study under experts and the best teachers, and practice will accomplish wonders in re-making, re-shaping and developing mental traits and skill. The laws of the universe are certain and unswerving in their fullfillment. They play no favorites. Race, creed, color, or country vary them not a single jot! Virtue rightly directed, study rightly applied and practice rightly employed, bring increased moral courage, mental culture and added skill' to 7 all. Simply pay the cost in right thinking, constructive moods, concentrated study, and the required experience, and reap the sure results of your time so spent and energies so used. Within you are all the forces, energies, mental faculties and phvsic powers necessary to achieve the success you de¬ sire. But it may take self-sacrifice, labor, study and time to develop those qualities and to learn to control their opera¬ tion and apply them to bring the desired results. All power comes from the development of power already within you. All true success is due to the unfolding of these intellectual and spiritual forces. Study them, and work in harmony with the principles of science and the eternal laws of the universe in using your intellectual and moral faculties to help others and yourself to get more out of life. IDEALS Ideals can be thus achieved; success, wealth and greatness gained. Desire to excel, use your conscious and unconscious mind to attain your ideal; frequently affirm the success you desire, claim it as your birthright spiritually, by assuming and asserting it is already yours in the thought world, and in time it will be manifest to all in the material world. MAKING REAL PROGRESS. You will find your progress swift and sure, that hidden forces are awakening, inspiration^ ambition and desire to serve humanity. Old limitations will disappear; new oppor¬ tunities will arise. Things once difficult to accomplish will become easy. Your self-confidence, courage, self-reliance and will-power will spur you on to greater attainments. Who can estimate the value of a soul awakened to limitless possibilities? Somewhere in each of us is the seed of ambi¬ tion and the desire for greater things. Yonder boy or girl may develop into the great man or woman of tomorrow. The dreams of our youth are only slumbering, awaiting the call of ambition and compelling power of the will, to be realized. Inspiration can awaken the sleeping inner forces and energies. This pamphlet is written in the hope it may awaken in the reader a new faith and determination to realize their dreams. Truth, courage and understanding are great forces at work to better the conditions of mankind. "Know the truth and it will make you free" said Christ. Fear no man, no event or thing" says Haddock. Have understanding that you may know the truth and develop courage advises Reason. Under¬ standing is necessary to know the truth and apply it cour¬ ageously. Fear, ignorance and superstition are the greatest 8 enemies to mankind. They destroy courage, freedom and happiness. They breed misery, failure and poverty. Education in truth principles, in logical reasoning, in right use of thought, science, business and production will destroy ignorance, superstition and poverty. Thought is power, thought is creative. "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." The mental attitude that prevails in your conscious and unconscious minds determines your success or lack of suc¬ cess, your courage or lack of courage, your wealth or lack of wealth. That which you desire with all the power of your heart and soul you can attain, if you put forth the right efforts. EFFICIENCY Success might be defined as efficiency. To succeed in life as a worker, a clerk, an executive, a salesman or in any busi¬ ness or professional career, you need be efficient. Efficiency is both a science and an art. It is knowing how to do and the ability to do, the right thing in the best way in your particular line of thought or activity. Efficiency calls for health, trained mental forces, self-control and power to solve the problems and meet the demands of your calling. To gain efficiency you must study the principles and theory of your job and be able to apply those laws and rules of the game to the work at hand. It means mastering details, devising better or more economical ways of doing business and getting larger or bet¬ ter results from your own efforts and the labor of others. The efficient worker, thinker or organizer saves time, money, energy or effort by planning out his work, foreseeing diffi¬ culties and by taking advantage of natural laws. To gain efficiency takes study, experience, time and perseverance, but it means increased pay, a better product, greater results and success in your undertakings and ambitions. BUSINESS SUCCESS. To succeed in business, develop nerve, endurance, integrity, business ability, accurate knowledge and master system and the technique of your particular field. Study how to improve and better the service you offer the public so as to constantly increase the number of satisfied patrons or clients. The suc¬ cess of great merchants like Marshall Field and John Wana- maker, and of great manufacturers and inventors like Mc- Cormack and Edison are due to the great services they ren¬ dered the public by their application of original ideas, meth¬ ods and natural laws to fill human needs. The power to in¬ vent, organize and give to the public new methods, tools, neces¬ sities and luxuries, brings its possessors wealth and fame, 9 if that power is properly used and exploited. Brain power is the result of developing the faculties of the mind by thor¬ ough education, training and concentration along special lines; and thousands of people could add to human achievement and production if they would arouse within themselves an intense desire and ambition to develope their mental capacity for creative thought and work, so as to serve their fellow-men. LESSONS OF HISTORY. The great men and women of all ages, races and countries are illustrations of what can be accomplished by following success principles. Joan of Arc, the Queen of Sheba, Moses, Plato, Oliver Cromwell, are scattered examples from history's pages of the results of developed personalities and strong characters in shaping nations. George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Willian Lloyd Garrison, Richard Allen, Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washing¬ ton are examples of great men who rose to be leaders of men and of great movements, molders of public opinion, and who by their courage, will power, character, ideas, initiative, their desire to aid their fellowmeri and to excel in their chosen lines, left their influence upon the history of this nation. They planned, fought, undertook, and put into execution their ideas for the betterment of themselves and others. They asserted their manhood by displaying physical and moral courage, original thought and winning personalities, they en¬ listed other in the cause of freedom, government, justice, hu¬ man rights, reform or education as the case might be, and triumphed in their efforts because their cause was just and right and they were serving the public. Great men use their mental powers to solve the problems of their people or nation. Nerve is absolutely necessary to accomplish any great under¬ taking. Hannibal, Napoleon and Toussant L'Ouverture are examples of courage, self confidence, self reliance and the dauntless spirit that overcame obstacles, knew no fear and in¬ spired others. Therefore to succeed in great undertakings, develop the same dauntless spirit and ability to master self, develop leadership, control others and accomplish the seeming¬ ly impossible, that these three great generals displayed in their battles. No odds were too great for them to tackle and nothing daunted or discouraged them, because they were mas¬ ters of their souls, original and thorough, in their plans, un¬ tiring in their efforts. They conquered because they never recognized defeat or doubted their ability to accomplish the things they undertook, Become familiar with the writings 10 and lives of the great and noble men and women of all ages and races. Socrates, Solomon, John Brown and Ghandi can teach us lessons of greater devotion to truth and duty. Wis¬ dom, knowledge and success principles are interesting because they point the way to self development and personal achieve¬ ment. But Truth is a greater power because she frees men from false beliefs, low ideals, and selfish lives. The good and great of all ages teach us that man can master his fate. If he is strong enough he can rise from poverty to wealth, from ignorance to power, from obscurity to fame. Intellectual abil¬ ity, strength of character, power to achieve can be developed by proper education and training. You can mold your future by persistent study and control of your thoughts and actions; you can develop courage, mental power and rise to great heights in almost any field you choose, if you will follow the right course persistently, courageously and faithfully. What others have accomplished, you can also achieve if you pay the price. SUCCESS SECRETS—BE A WINNER. By William J. Thompson. Individuality, personality, reliability, accuracy in thought, initiative and artistic finish will enable you to earn $20 a day where at present you may be earning $3. There are men and women earning $10 to $20 a day, who at one time earned less than you. Form a secret determination to increase your earn¬ ing power. The average man and woman does not earn $5 a day, but that is due to the fact that the average perso^ doe& not develop one-tenth part of his or her mental capacity or creative force, and the ability to use their mental and moral faculties. The constructive powers of imagination and thought are little understood and appreciated by most people, so that they fail to use these forces as a means to bettering their con¬ ditions. Neither do they appreciate the power of education, training, will power and courage to lift them out of obscurity and poverty into fame and fortune. Select a field of success where brain power, originality, special talents and skill count. Art, commerce, medicine, journalism, science, real estate, law and engineering are a few of the many such fields. In these fields there are various lines of endeavor that lead to success, wealth and honor. In science you have the chemist, the doc¬ tor, the manufacturer, the inventor, and experts in thousands of creative, industrial and mechanical pursuits. The scientist is constantly inventing new devices, new products for food, 11 shelter or raiment, new and better ways of doing necessary work. In literature you have the poet, the novelist, the editor, the dramatic and scenario writer. In business you have the merchant, the banker, the promoter, the financier, the agent, the expert accountant, the private secretary and underwriter. In art you have the artist, the sculptor, the scene painter, the photographer and decorator. You must first select the career for which your mental and spiritual make-up best fit you. Then make it your secret pur¬ pose in life to excel in that chosen field, be it business, law, medicine, art or some branch of science or other worthy career in which there is an opportunity to achieve success, fortune or greatness. Having selected the life pursuit, you must by thrift and economy along all lines save enough money to en¬ able you to get the necessary education and training under the best teachers, experts, masters, or university that prepares individuals to succeed in your chosen line. Let your undis¬ closed ambition be a constant spur to greater effort to realize your secret desires, to gain knowledge, skill, experience and efficiency in the selected calling. Remember that accuracy, efficiency, initiative, originality, and ability to think logically along new lines may mean discovering new methods, new laws and new products, which will lead to riches and renown. Experiment at new combinations and use the constructive pow¬ er of the imagination and power of the brain to analyze, com¬ pare, deduct, and reassemble ideas and thoughts. Success will come as you put into practice the theories, principles, know¬ ledge, skill, experiments and teachings of your chosen calling, and carry out the secrets of success revealed to you by your own search for truth, better methods and creative power that dwells within your mind and soul. The measure of the earn¬ ing power and creative capacity of your own brain and soul depend on the development of your mental powers and moral qualities. By developing the now unused brain cells you will discover new and greater mental power. By developing cour¬ age, reason, constructive imagination, executive ability, power of analysis, will-power and personality, you may gain honors, wealth and eventually become great because of your ability to serve humanity and to aid your race and nation. What you can become in the future depends on you realizing the mighty forces within you and opportunities about you to achieve what others like you have accomplished by having one exclusive ambition and taking advantage of natural laws, and the sur¬ vival of the fiittest in the race of life. It depends on health, endurance and the proper use of your brain and energy in 12 preparation to attain the greater success God intended e?ch of us to achieve when He gave each a mind and soul. Claim your birthright by having a sole ambition. Desire, study, concentrate, excel and lead in some line of endeavor. Thrift, system, nerve and executive ability are essential to business) success. To express the good, the true, and the noble, is to express the divine in human nature. Poise, courage and self confidence will inspire others with faith in one's abilities. Personality, knowledge, initiative, tact, and creative thought pay big dividends to those who know their value. Life is a test of one's ambitions, character and ability. In conclusion, we wish to acknowledge that many of these ideas we have gleaned from other Success and New Thought writers. From Swaboda, the Hindoo philosopher, we learned the power of secret ambitions and secret determination to arouse inner forces; from Haddock, the power of will and per¬ sonality to achieve success; from Haanel, that the real "you" is spiritual, that thought is a creative power and that pschy- cic laws control the thought world. NOTICE. Follow this Wealth and Welfare Series. Study each topic separetely. The ideas and methods of success, together with life stories of men and women who have won their laurels against odds greater than yours, will be told in succeeding numbers. "Ironquill," an experienced educator and writer, with Wm. J. Thompson, a writer and student of life problems, will pre¬ sent vital ideas in every number. Read each number! CONCLUSION. To win success then it is necessary to have a single, definite ideal, to desire to attain that ideal with all your mind and soul, to prepare the body, mind and soul forces for efficiency, power and success in that particular field, and to concentrate one's efforts to realizing the one great ambition. Shakespeare said "it is not in our stars but, in ourselves that we are underlings." Others have achieved success, be¬ come great, and reached the goals they set. We too can do likewise by similar efforts. Study the biographies and lives of great and successful people. Learn the secret of their success. We should not be satisfied with poverty, failure or mediocre success. We, too, can add to human knowledge and achievement. We can raise our physical, mental, and moral standards of personal efficiency and achievement. We can work in harmony with the infinite forces of nature and the universe to attain the dignity and power that belongs to true courageous souls. We can use the power of thought, the silent invisible forces of personality and will power to gain greater, nobler success and so the inspire others. Learn to think, dare, and to achieve the heights reached by successful men and wo¬ men. We achieve greatness by learning to serve our fellow- man. Service to humanity is the measure of true success.
