PRAYER AT GRAVE Almighty and everlasting Thou art an unchan¬ geable God the preserver o£ each and all of our lives. We come before Thee in the most humble and sa cred manner that we were ever taught. We thank Thee for Thy great care and keeping, and ask a con¬ tinuance of Thy rich and noble blessings. As it has pleased Thee to take from our abode one dear to our hearts, we beseech Thee to bless and sanctify unto us this dispensation of Thy providence, inspire our hearts with wisdom from on high, that we may glorify Thee with all our ways. May unity, fellowship and love ever hold us in xhe true path of righteousness, and when Thou art done with us here upon this earth, we pray that Thou would unite us around Thy Throne where we can praise Thee forever and ever, amen. (All respond, Amen.) FUNERAL, HYMN Death has been here and borne away, A brother from our sight; Not long ago he filled his space And sit with us to learn, But now he has run his mortal race, And never will return. (During singing the brothers will march around the grave, each drop his evergreen and take their foamer positions after singing.) W —Brethren, the solemn notes that betok¬ en the dissolution of this earthly tabernacle, have again alarmed the outer door of our Cabinet. Anoth er soul has been summoned in that Fatherland where many have gone before us. Again we are caused to assemble among the habitations of the dead. To bfhold the narrow channel that is provided for rll that now lives. Here around us in this peace which the wcjHd cannot give, sleep the unremembered dead. The gentle breeze fan their covering and they heel it not; also the sunshine and storm pass over them yet they remain undisturbed. This should remind us that the sword Of death in the hands of time is forever drawn upon us, and will soon make us fit subjects for this abode. We should strive to walk the narrow path of righteousness. Avoid sin and evilness, love and fear God and remember the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Extend the hand of charity wherever and whenever the opportunity permits, and say the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh, blessed be the name of the LoiFd. M. of L.—Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scorn¬ ful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord and hie law doth he meditate day and night. And shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also} shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away; therefore the ungod¬ ly shall not stand in the judgment, nor the sinners in the congregation of the righteous, for the Lord kroweth the way of the righteous, but the way <'t the ungodly shall perish. V. M. of L.—Hear my cry 0 God, attend unto iny prayer from the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee. When my heart is overwhelmed lead me cj a rock that is higher than I, for Thou hast been a shelter for me and a strong tower from the enemy, 1 will abide in Thy tabernacle forever. I will trust in the cover of Thy wings, for Thoa 0 God, hast heard my vows. Thou hast given the heritage of those that fear Thy name. Thou wilt prolong the king's life for his years are many generations, he shall abide before God forever. O prepare mercy and truth which may preserve hira. So will I sing praise unto Thy name forever; that 1 may daily perform my vows. (The P. M. of L. proceeds to throw three spade"1 of earth in the grave. All officers and brothers do likewise and take their former positions in the cir¬ cle.) W. C.—Brothers and officers please assist mo with the last earthly honors. (All give the grand honors.) M. of L.—Officers and Brothers we will now stand adjourned until we are again caused to assem¬ ble among the habitations of the dead. (All respond, so may it be, amen.) (This ends the ceremonies—should some ono else wish to perform any part they may now have permission.) —10— OPENING ODE IN COUNCILS My soul be on thy guard Ten thousand foes arise The host of sin are pressing hard, To draw Thee from the skies. Oh, watch and fight and pray, The battle ne'er give o'er, Renew it boldly every day, And help Divine implore. OPENING PRAYER Our Father, which art in Heaven, hallowed b'J Thy name, Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth, as it is done in heaven; give us chis day, our daily bread, and forgive us our transgiessions as we forgive those that transgress against us; lead us not into temptation but deliver us frc- leading them in unity, fellowship and love, with these views, its symbolism was established and to teach these principles, its ceremonies are illus¬ trious and celebrated. The humblest of our offi¬ cers indicate it, the future of our Cabinet proclaims it the colors of our order and the brother's regaiia symbolize its high and noble principle. Its govern¬ ment, like that of our country a christian govern¬ ment, founded upon christian principles with equal suffrage to all. This mode in our order reminds us of the act of emancipation that placed us upon equal footing with all nations of this country. This order does not interfere with religion or politics, though it is very closely interwoven with religion and it is concluded that its members will worship Go0 in some form, also use their right of suffrage wher¬ ever and whenever the opportunity permits. This cider has a representative form of government and ritualistic form of work. The various Cabinecs, Councils, etc., constitute our legislative body. The general meeting or bi-ennial congress the highest tribunal the National Committee of Management, our executive being elected by the tri-ennial con¬ gress. Also instructed, authorized and empowered by the aforesaid body. —14— This order will not permit an officer without dignity and ability; these principles are no less enforced in our Cabinets and Councils than in all other branches of the order. He who would become a member of our order must prove his moral fitness by submitting his char¬ acter to the scrutiny of those whom he desires to affiliate with as his associates, and if that character will not bear so strict a test, he is at once rejected No Cabinet can neglect the solemn duty of examin¬ ing the character of its candidates without sinking to degredation. For the purpose of perpetuating these blessings and extending the influence of our order we are assembled, and I trust that each will lend assistance. M. of L».—Brothers and officers, please assemble at the sacred altar to properly dedicate this new Cabinet. (P. M. of L. as marshall with sword form a pro¬ cession of the brothers two abreast and march around the hall, once circling around the sacred altar, meaning the officers of the new Cabinet.) P. M. of L». then conduct the Chaplain arourvl the hall once. The W. C. carries open bible in his hand. The A. S. and G. S. with record books in hands assemble around the sacred altar, the W. T. bears the funds of the Cabinet. All assemble at the sacred altar when complete. M. of L. and V. M. of L. march around the hall three times; the M. of L. carries a pot of earth; th3 V M. of L. carries corn. An ode may be sung dur¬ ing marching. —15- DEDICATION ODE Sowing in the morning, Sowing seeds of kindness; Sowing in the noontide In the dewy eve; Bye and bye the harvest In the time of reaping We shall come rejoicing, Bringing in the sheaves. Chorus— Bringing in the sheaves, Bringing in the sheaves, We shall come rejoicing, Bringing in the sheaves. (At the close of the song and march, the M. of L. and V. M. of L. will halt at the altar of unity and the W. C. will join them on the right, the W. T. on the left, they advance to the sacred altar foil'1 at reast. C. advances to the sacred altar, lays the bi¬ ble upon it and reads the hundred and fifth Psalms. DEDICATION PRAYER Harken unto us, O Lord, hear our feeble cry, make us Thy true, believing children. We pray Thee to grant us thy grace that we may withstand the temptations of this earth, for we know that Thou, —16— O Lord, hast been our refuge and our dwelling place in all generations. Before they were formed or even thou hadst formed the earth; even from ever¬ lasting to everlasting Thou hadst been an unchangea¬ ble God. A God of mercy and a God of truth, the hea¬ vens declare their righteousness and Thy people see Thy glory. O Lord, help us to glorify and mag¬ nify Thy great name. For Thou hast preserved our lives and remembered our iniquities. [We,1 pray Thee that Thou would cement us together in unity, ^fellowship and love, as many stones in a mighty wall of protection, too strong to be broken by one enemy or shaken by false representatives.
