-AND- l^eologidkl ^eir(in'ary. pv. J, L. DAI(T, i\x !/[., Priwlcipaj>« Wk£l|ii^tot\, ©ederqbef i£t, 1§§^. Dear Brethren and Friends • For many years the great need of an Institution of higher learning at the Capital of the Nation, which is the center of a very large colored Baptist population, con¬ trolled and supported, in large part, by the colored Bap¬ tists of the country, has been keenly.felt. Various and sufficient have been the reasons assigned for this long-felt need, and these reasons are increasing in strength and numbers every day. Hence, the call and demand upon us, for our earnest and united efforts in the work of es¬ tablishing such a school, have been constant and strong. ^Recognizing this necessity much has been said, but, hitherto, little or nothing has been done by our brethren by way of supplying this want. We take pleasure, therefore, in announcing to our breth¬ ren and friends that an Academy and Theological School to be known as the Grimes-Anderson Academy and Theological Seminary has been established and opened in this city at No. 1206, R. St., 1ST, W., near Vermont Avenue, which will provide preparatory instruction in Literary, Scientific and Classical Studies, and a complete Theologi¬ cal training for those who desire a thorough preparation for the work of the Christian ministry. It shall always be our prayerful endeavor to secure for this Institution the most devoted and competent corps of teachers, to deserve the respect and moral support of our fellow-men, and so to ma-ia^e the School as to commend it to the favor of God. 3 Since we desire to erect as soon as possible a substantial school-building which shall at once be an honor to the names of "Father Grimes" and'Rev. D. W. Anderson 1 and a pride and blessing to the Baptists, not only of the National Capital, but also of the entire country, we do most earnestly appeal to the brethren and friends every¬ where for their patronage and material aid. Brethren, everywhere, will you not fall in line with this grand movement, and rally " with one accord," and thus insure success for this noble and Christian enterprise? Friends, will you not help us while we are helping our¬ selves? If we all will only work and give there is no telling what we can accomplish. Sincerely yours, Rev. J. H. Brooks, Pastor Fifth Church.
