 RESOLUTIONS 
 
 (he Court- 
 
 Adopted b\j a Meeting of the People of Powhatan, held in 
 house on February Court Daij, I860. 
 
 At a larire meeting of the people of Powhatan, held in the court- 
 house on February court day, Charles Carter Lee, Esq. was called 
 to the thair, and 'Win. Pope Dabney was elected secretary. The 
 chairman explained, in an eloquent manner, the object of the meet- 
 iiiiT, and appointed R. Ivanhoe Cocke, Dr. J. B. Harvie, Col. Wm. C. 
 Sc^nt, E. F. Baugh and Wm. Pope Dabney a committee to prepare 
 resolutions expressive of the sense of the meeting. 
 
 While the committee had retired for- this purpose. Revs. J. D. 
 Powell and William A. Campbell were called on, and addressed the 
 ni<M'tin<r. 
 
 The committee having returned, the secretary read the resolutions 
 
 as follows: 
 
 We, tlie people of Powhjitan, having heard the result of the ctlbi ts 
 recently made by three of our distinguished citizens for peace, and 
 seeinsr that our enemies will accept of no terms of settlement short 
 of unconditional submission to fanaticism and tyranny: 
 
 Resolved, that we pledge to our government and to our fellow- 
 citizens of the Confederate States our undivided efforts to resist the 
 yoke which the government of the United States seeks to impose 
 u[)on us. 
 
 Resolved, that we tender to our army our sincerest tlianks for their 
 uallantry in the field, and for the noble spirit they have shown in 
 their resolutions recently passed. 
 
 Resolved, that we pledge "our lives, our fortunes and our Sacred 
 honors" for the prosecution of the war to a completion consistent 
 with our honor and independence. 
 
 Resolved, that our soldiers tiom our couniy shall be assured that 
 in their absence their families shall be amply provided for. 
 
 Resolved, that the secretary forward these resolutions to Hon. T. 
 S. Gholson, our representative in Congress, and to Messrs. Kash and 
 Irving, our members in the Legislature of Virginia, and to the Rich- 
 mon(l jtapers for publication. 
 
 Pending these resolutions, Col. Wm. C. Scott and R. Ivanhoe Cocke 
 addressed the meeting in favor of their adoption, and being put to 
 the vote by the chairman, they were unanimously adopted. 
 
 The meeting then adjourned.
