 Before a General Court Martial convened at or near the 
 Headquarters of Major-General Pickett, on the 3rd of Feb'y, 
 1864, were arraigned and tried the following named prisoners. 
 The speci. cations being lengthy and exactly the same in all the 
 cases, are omitted in this order, they representing that the 
 prisoriers after duly enlisting in the service of the Confederate 
 States, deserted therefrom, and were taken in arms in the ser- 
 vice of the United States f

of -Brig. Gen'l Hoke's Brigade, now in the Slate of N. C, foi 
 the purpose of arresting deserters and collecting conscripts; at 
 such time and place as he (Gen'l Hoke) may direct.

 VI. In the cases of privates John J. Brock, Wm. Hadclick, 
 Jesse Summerlin, Andrew J. Brittain, Lewis Freeman, Calvin 
 Huffman, Stephen Jones, Lewis Taylor, William H. Daughtry 
 and John. Freeman, of Nethercutt's Battalion ; Joseph Brock, 
 27th Beg't N. C. Troops,and Ohas. Cuthrell, Latham's Battery, 
 N. C. Troops, the sentences are approved and will be duly carried 
 into execution under the supervision of Brigadier General 
 Hoke, in twenty- four hours after their publication, at such time 
 and place as he may direct.

 VIII. In the cases of Elijah Kellum, conscript, and William 
 Irvine Hill, private 41st Regiment N. C. Troops, the sentences 
 are approved, and will be duly carried into execution, under 
 the supervision of the commandant at Kinston, N. C, in 
 twenty-four hours after the publication of their sentences. 
 
 IX. 23.— Private Alexander McCoy, Whitford's Battalion.

 And the court do therefore/ sentence the said private Alex- 
 ander McCoy, Whitford's Battalion, to be put at hard labor 
 during the war on such Government works as the General com- 
 manding may direct. And the court is thus lenient in consid-- 
 eration of the extreme youth, and of the physical disability 
 and mental imbecility ol the accused, as apparent to the court 
 and established in the evidence. 
 
 24. — Private George Hawkins, Whitford's Battalion.

 Sentence. 
 And the court do therefore, sentence the said Geo. Hawkins, 
 private Whitford's Battalion, to be branded on the left hip with 
 the letter "D," four inches in length, and to be put at hard la- 
 bor daring the continuance" of the war, with a twelve pound 
 ball attached to his left ankle by a chain five feet long, on such 
 Government works as the General commanding may direct. 
 
 25.— Private Fred. Turner, Whitford's Battalion.

 And the court, upon reflection upon the evidence adduced, re- 
 commend that the General Commanding turn over the said 
 William C. Cox, to the civil authorities, to be tried for treason. 
 
 X. In the cases of privates Alexander McCoy, Geo. Hawkins, 
 Fred. Turner and Ruel Wetherington of Whitford's Battalion, 
 the sentences are approved and the men will be sent under 
 guard to Brigadier General John H. Winder, Commanding 
 Department Henrico, for the execution of their sentences. 
 
 In the case of Wm. C. Cox, private Bridge Guard Comp'y, 
 the finding is approved and the prisoner will be sent under 
 guard to the Marshal of the Eastern District of North Caroli- 
 na, lor the proper adjudication of his case. 
 
 XI. The General Court Martial, of. which Lieut.- Colonel 
 Jas. R. Branch, C. S. Artillery, ' is the President, is hereby
