The Congress of the Confederate States of 1j America do enact, That the rank, pay and alloAvances of ^) a brigadier-general in the Army of the Confederate 4 States be, and the same are hereby, conferred on the 5 surgeon-general of the same. 1 Sec. 2. Be it further enacted, That there shall be ap- 2 pointed in the Provisional Army of the Confederate 3 States two assistant surgeons- general, willi tlie rank, pay 4 and allowances of colonels. of cavalry ; one medical in- 5 spector-general with tlie rank, pay and allowances of a 6 colonel of cavalry, and such number of medical inspec- 7 tors, not exceeding twelve, with the rank, pay and allow- 8 ances of lieutenant-colonels of cavalry. 1 Sec. ']. Be it further enacted, That there may Ije 2 2 assigned to each army in the field or military depart- ment one suriieon as medical director, who, lor the time 4 so occupied, shall ])e entitled to the rank. })ay and allow- 5 ances of a lieutenant-colonel of cavaliy : that there may 6 be assigned to each division one surgeon as division-sur- 7 geon, and to each l^rigade one surgeon ?.s brigade-sur- 8 geon and two assistant surgeons for staff or other duty. 1 Sec. L Be it further enacted, That to each regiment 2 of cavalry or infantry, tliere shall be assigned one surgeon with the rank of major, and two assistant surgeons, each 1 with the rank of captain. 1 8ec. 5. Be it further enacted, That tliere shall be en- 2 listed and mustered into service an inlirmary corps of able-bodied men, to be composed of fifty men to each 4 brigade of an army in the field, and said infirmary corps 5 shall be organized into companies of fifty and officered 6 with one first lieutenant and one second lieutenant, two 7 sergeants and two corporals, and paid hi like manner as 8 connnissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and sol- 9 diers of the Confederate service. 1 Sec. 6.
