The Congress of the Confederate States of America do 2 enact, That from and after the passage of this Act, it shall be 3 the duty of every commander of a company in the armies of the 4 Confederate States, so soon as he knows that any private or non- 5 commissioned officer of his company is absent without leave, to 6 send up a certificate of the fact to the commander of his brigade, 7 who shall forthwith employ such responsible person or persons 8 as he may think proper, to arrest and bring back to his command 9 such absent private or non-commissioned officer. 1 Sec 2. Be it further enacted, That whenever the delinquent 2 absentee, together with the certificate above mentioned of his 3 "company commander, to the fact of his absence without leave, 4 shall be delivered to the commanding officer of a military post or 5 camp, such commanding officer s^all give a receipt for the 6 delivery of such absentee to the person or persons so delivering 7 him. 1 Sec. 3. Be it further enacted, /That upon the presentation of 2 the receipt above mentioned to the quartermaster of the post or 3 camp, it shall be the duty of the said quartermaster to pay to 4 the person or persons presenting such receipt the sum of fifteen 5 dollars, for which this law shall be his warrant and authority. 1 Sec. 4. Be it further enacted, That it shall be the duty of the 2 commanding officer of the post or camp w T ho receives the private 3 or non-commissioned officer so delivered, to send as speedily as 4 practicable such private or non-commissioned officer back to the 5 commanding officer of the company to which he belongs, together 6 with a copy of the receipt which he has given to the person or 7 persons delivering him. 1 Sec. 5. Be it further enactfd, That it shall be the duty of the 2 commanding officer of the company to which the returned private 3 or non-commissioned officer" belongs, upon the delivery of the 4 man and the copy of the receipt above mentioned, to enter on 5 the muster and pay rolls of the company, opposite tl>e name of 6 such returned private or non-commissioned officer, the full sum 7 of fifteen dollars, in order that the said sum may be deducted- Hollinger Corp. pH8.5
