While the guests were chat- ting away about Horse Show pros- pects, a magnificent new grand piano that had just been installed in Mr. Vanderbilt’s sitting-room began play- ing as if suddenly possessed of a de- mon. Mr. Vanderbilt had made no move- ment and the visitors could not un- derstand it until their host explained. The grand piano is played by elec- tricity from Mr. Vanderbilt’s dining- room. Steel sheets of perforated “music” take the place of the fingers of a performer. A cable containing as many wires as there are keys is connected, and an electrical impulse causes each wire by an electro-mag- netic arrangement to pull its key down at the proper time. The piano and :he electrical mechanism are said to have cost Mr. Vanderbilt a round sum. — From “New York World,” Sunday Nov. 7th, 1909. It’s the Knowles’ Store. Ask the fashionable dressers of Montgomery where they buy their hats — their suits — their stylish haberdashery? They will tell you “The Knowles’ Store.” Well dressed women recommend us perhaps unthinkingly, but just as unquestionably, as being the best place to find exclusive merchandise. We import directly from Europe, an enterprising feature of our buying policy, practiced by no other store in this section. Railroad Fares Refunded Through Rebate Association. We do not always find a modern kitchen in the home of the housewife who keeps the most tidy parlor— but it is almost an assured fact that supreme social happiness reigns in the home where we find the modem kitchen. The elevated Gas Range builds the modem kitchen. Montgomery Light & Water Power Co. The Blue Book Montgomery, Alabama 1909-10 Compiled by Mrs. Thomas M. Owen 1909 THE PARAGON PRESS Montsomery, Ala. I^Ji 09 7 5 Prefatory Note This volume is an unpretentious attempt to set forth the organized social life of Montgomery, the capital city of the State of Alabama. It is certain that the information assem- bled, even with all of the limitations of brevity, will prove of substantial service to the hundreds who may consult the book. Following the lists of City, County, State and United States officials, the several organizations are grouped in four general classes, which will indicate the scope of the volume, namely, Churches and benevolent institutions, His- torical and patriotic organizations, Literary clubs, and Social organizations. The aim has been, not the preparation of histories or historical sketches, but the presentation, in a brief way, of only such facts as would be of practical service. It is desirable that the book should be in daily, even hourly use, and the plan and arrangement are directed to meeting the anticipated demand. Much pains has been taken to harmonize the materials assembled. And yet, owing to the variety of sources from which the lists and other facts were gathered, and the diffi- culty in obtaining details in many instances, it will be found that the effort has not been wholly successful. In every case, however, the lists given, with the spelling of names and the initials, are reproduced with literal exactness, except in cases where known errors appeared. In case errors are detected, this explanation should be kept in mind. In assembling the data, the compiler has been the recipient of numerous courtesies for which grateful acknowledgement is here made. Acknowledgement is also made to advertisers, through whose generous aid it has been possible to carry the work to completion.
