Mr. Foote, from the special committee heretofore appointed to investigate the facts connected with the fall of Forts Donelson and Henry, and the surrender of the city of Nashville into the hands of the enemy, to which committee was also referred the cise of Major V. K. Stevenson, quartermaster, <^c, stated, that, since this committee heretofore reported upon the matters originally referred to them, they have had the case of quartermaster Stevenson under considera- tion, and especially the accounts of that oiScer with the government ; that they have not "had it in their power to examine the numerous vouchers appertaining to the accounts of Major Stevenson, which are on file in the proper department, but that, through their chairman, they have held a .special correspondence on this subject with the Quartermaster General, which correspondence is herewith presented; upon the basis of which they beg leave to say that it seems to them that they might well he discharged from the further investigation of this affair, and they do, therefore, ask to be discharged accordingly. K. Stevenson, quartermaster, &c, and ascertaining the condition of his accounts with the government, I have the honor to request that you will, so far as you are able to ro, cause us to be furnished with such information on the latter subject as may enable us to make a final report in his case. Foote: Sir : I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note, as Chairman of the Special Committee of the House of Repesentatives to investigate certain charges preferred against Major V. K. Stevenson, quartermaster, as also the condition of his accounts with the govern- ment, &c, &c, and in reply to state, that the books of this office show that Major Stevenson has accounted for all the funds placed in his hands by requisition or transfer. The final statement showed him indebted to the government one dollar and five cents, being an error in his accounts. On the 20th August, a supplemental account for the third quarter, 1862, was received, in which he accounts for. one hundred and fifty dollars and ninety-one cents taken up by him as dis- allowances, reported by second auditor in settlement of his returns.
