 A BILL 
 
 To be entitled An Act for 1 hr further Organization of the Field Artdhry 
 *^[of tin Confederate States. 
 
 \ Section 1. The Congress of the Confederate States of Ame- 
 
 2 rica do enact, That for the artillery of an army in the field there 
 
 3 may be allowed such field officers, in addition to those already 
 
 4 authorized by law, as the Secretary of War may approve, on 
 
 5 recommendation of the Commanding General : Provided, That. 
 
 6 the whole number shall not exceed one major to command each 
 
 7 battalion of two batteries ; one colonel or one lieutenant colo- 
 B nel, aided by a major, to command each battalion of not less than 
 9 three nor more than four batteries ; and one colonel, aided by a 
 
 10 lieutenant colonel and major, or by two majors, to command a 
 
 1 1 battalion of not less than five nor more than six batteries ; tuofa 
 
 12 battalions to be formed, changed or dispersed, ;it the discretion 
 
 13 of the General commanding the army, with the sanction of the 
 
 14 Secretary of War. 
 
 I Sec. 2. Be it further enacted, That in addiiion to general

 2 officers of artillery already authorized by law, there may be ap- 
 
 3 pointed one major general, with the staff of a cavalry general of 
 
 4 like grade, to command the artillery of an army in the field hav- 
 6 ing not less than one hundred and sixty guns; and one brigadier 
 
 6 general, with the staff of a cavalry general of like grade, to com- 
 
 7 mand the artillery of each army corps or department having as 
 
 8 many as sixty-four guns. 
 
 1 Sec. 3. Be it further enacted, That promotions in the artil- 
 
 2 lery above the rank of captain shall in alT^| |^ selection. 
 
 1 Sec. 4. Be it further enacted, That promotions^© temporary 
 
 2 rank may be made by selection to fill vacancies in all grades oc- 
 
 3 casioned by disability, imprisonment in the hands of the enemy, 
 
 4 or other cause occasioning temporary vacancies.
