/2 ™ c BICmiOND, March Slst, 1864. DEAR SIR:— I propose to erect a Steam Sugar Mill at some point on the James River Canal, about equal distance be- tween Richmond and Lynchburg, for the purpose of grinding the sugar cane an^' reducing the juice to Molasses by steam. This I will do on shares, or I will pay for the cane, which is to be deliv- ered on the bank of the canal, from where it will be conveyed to the mill by boats of my own. I have the machinery complete — sugar mill, engine, tanks, vacuum pans, boilers, &c. My object is to encourage the cultivation of the Sorghum, which I hope' will prove of great service, by yielding a substitute for provisions — meat in particular — not only for home consump- tion, but also for the army. Should my enterprise meet with your approval, and you are disposed to second my efforts, please write me at Richmond, how many acres of land you will put in sorghum. Very respectfully, CHAS. "JT.
