Members of Congress are frequently called upon to vouch for the per- (jonal respectability of their constituents and acquaintances, who are unknown to the passport officer, and they cannot with propriety de- cline ; it would be unkind as well as discourteous to do so, and -when i:ruthfully and honestly performed, the act imports no wrong. It is due to the editor of the Examiner, J. M. Daniel, to state, that when called on for the author of the article in his paper, ho promptly t^ave up the name of one of his local reporters, and declared tha't vhen he saw the article in type, ho forbade its publication, because '.e knew nothing of the trutli of it, and it was subsequently published •ccidentally.
