All schools listed under the class of DIPLOMA HIGH SCHOOLS have been established four years or longer, hav- ing met all the requirements of standard four-year high schools laid down by the State Board of Education, and are eligible to award State high school diplomas to such of their graduates as have met the diploma requirements. The State high school diploma carries with it the assurance that the holder has earned as many as sixteen standard units credit in the high school from which the pupil graduated, and that the pupil has met the other requirements of the State Board of Education. A total of 4,841 high school graduates received State high school diplomas at the close of the 1927-1928 session, every one of whom was vouched for by the chairman of the local board of high school trustees, the principal of the high school, and the superintendent of the local school system. Copies of these certificates are filed in the office of the State High School Supervisor. Each high school graduate to whom a State high school diploma was awarded was properly certified by the responsible authorities to have completed satisfactorily the subject-matter grouped as follows : English 4 units One major 3 units One minor 2 units Another minor 2 units Free electives 5 units Total 16 units All schools classified as THREE- YEAR HIGH SCHOOLS offer work only thru the tenth grade, and the graduates there- from do not receive State high school diplomas. The total number of units earned by these graduates do not in many cases exceed 12. All school* classified as NEW HIGH SCHOOLS have been established for either one, two or three years, as the subheads under the general classification indicate. While a number of these schools offer eleventh grade work, yet none of the gradu- ates have been awarded State high school diplomas, as a regu- lation of the State Board of Education requires a high school to be organized and operated as a. recognized or State-aided high school for four scholastic, years before becoming eligible to issue diplomas to its graduates. Rules for rating high schools in credit units are printed the High School Manual. J. McT.
