 To prohibit dealing in the paper currency of the enemy. 
 
 1 Section 1. The Congress of the. Confederate States of America do 
 
 2 enact. That no broker, banker or dealer in exchange or person 
 
 3 concerned in trade, as a merchant or vender of merchandize of 
 i any description, shall buy, sell, take or have in possession, any 
 
 paper currency of the United States. 
 
 1 Sec. 2. Any person violating the provisions of this act shall 
 
 2 forfeit the amount so bought, sold, taken or held in possession • 
 
 3 a sum equal thereto, be fined not less than ($1,000,) one the - 
 ■1 sand dollars, nor more than twenty thousand dollars ($20,000,) 
 b and be imprisoned not less than three months nor more than three 
 6 years. 
 
AMENDMENTS.

 1 The Congress of the Confederate States of America do enact, That 
 
 2 it shall not be lawful for any person within the Confederate 
 
 3 kitates to use in trade, or in any way circulate therein the paper 
 
 4 currency of the United States. And any person who shall trade 
 
 5 in, or attempt to circulate said currency withifi the Confederate 
 G States, shall be guilty of a high misdemeanor, and punishable by 
 
 7 fine or imprisonment, or by both tine and imprisonment, and 
 
 8 forfeiture of the funds so attempted to bo used, or so used at the 
 discretion of a jury, before any of the district courts of the 
 
 10 Confederate States, under such regulations as prevail in other 
 
 11 cases of high misdemeanoriS : Provided, Postage stamps of the 
 
 12 United States are not embraced in the provisions of this act, nor 
 
 13 shall it apply to citizens of the Confederate States who are 
 
 14 within the lines of the enemy, so long as they so remain.

 Amend by striking out section secondhand inserting in lieu thereof, 
 as follows : 
 
 1 Sec. 2. Any person violating the provisions of this act, shall 
 
 2 be subject to indictment and prosecution in the Confederate court, 
 
 3 holden for the district within which the ofifence was committed, and 
 
3 
 
 i shall, upon conviction, forfeit the amount so bought, sold, circu- 
 
 .3 latetl, or used, or a sum equal thereto, and shall be moreover 
 
 6 subject to a fine of not more than twenty thousand dollars, nor 
 
 7 less than five hundred, and be imprisoned not less than three 
 -S months, nor more than three years, at the discretion of said 
 i) court ; and it shall be the duty of the judges of the seveiHl Confed- 
 
 1<» eratc courts to give this act specially in charge to the grand 
 
 1 1 jury.

 2 lieu thereof: " circulate, or in any manner trade in."
