it Cataloged RECORD OF THE A GEE FAM I LY. BY JAMES W. AGEE^tHjWee«W 1 I THE FLOWERS COLLECllON REMARKS. Some have thought I was getting up a history of our family. But I aimed only at what my card called for: the name and address of every Agee, descendant of an Agee and person to whom an Agee or descendant was married; with the time and place of the birth, marriage and death of each. I would be glad to know something of the history of my ances- tors and will be thankful to the readers of this for any items of history that they may hereafter feel disposed to send me. It is a satisfaction to know something even of the genealogy of our ancestry. And so will it be to future generations of our family. This record is for them as well as us. The record is not complete, perhaps not one fourth of the Agee family given. I sent cards to all that I could hear of. Some failed to respond, while some responses may have failed to reach me. Be the cause what it may, I very much regret that 1 did not get a full record from all who received the cards. For my own satisfaction, I desire to obtain a fuller and, if possi- ble, more perfect record and I would esteem it a favor if those who read this would note any errors or deficiencies in name, date or place and so write me and, also, send address of any families or individuals not given here. Please do this at once, before you forget it. If any have sent and it failed to reach me, let such please send again and, possibly, in the future I maiy obtain additional matter sufficient to justify another and a fuller publication. Please send names of parents where not given in this. Whether I ever publish another or not, I wish, so long as I live, to continue gathering up the record and any help others may give will ])e thankfully received. By giving hoth the date and place of birth, marriage and death, we give more history and in fewer words than can be given in any other way. The place of birth, marriage and death, shows where the families have lived. 2 The /nil name should be given and not J. W. for John William. I repeat again just what I desire: First: — The name of every Agce, descendant of an Agee and person to v^hom an Agee was married. Second: — The time and place of birth, marriage and death of each. This includes the person to whom an Agee or descendant was married. Third: — The names of the parents of each married couple, but not their time. Give the maiden name of the mother. Fourth: — The place where parents and grand-parents have lived, might enable us to trace back to the "24." Fifth: — Any items of history you may think best to give. Though, if I should ever publish again, 1 do not suppose I could put in many such items. I would like, however, to have them for my own satisfaction. One sent me this item: "I have often heard my aunt Ann Flood speak of the Agee family. She said she never knew or heard of an Agee being in the poor house ;v in prison, and that the family would bear tracing as well as any family she knew of. The men were honest and the women virtuous." Never change your given name nor change the spelling of your surname. With a changed name it might be difficult to identify you should it ever become necessary to do so. If your name is plain Sarah Nancy or Ebenezer Bartholomew don't change it but hold to the name your parents gave you and so live that you will never be ashamed of it. Some who did not send the desired ten cents may receive this record. If so you yet have the privilege of sending the dime along with any information you may feel disposed to forward to me. So far, the money received will not pay the expense of })ublishing, not considering the time and labor necessary to the work, but please let the items of record come, though the dime should stay at home. SUGGESTIONS. 3 THE RECORD.^ w^i Whero shall I })eofin? I have met with several different Agee families and heard of several others. All with whom I have talked trace their record back to Vircrinia ancestors. I have, therefore, claimed kin with every Agee, except a colored preacher I heard of in Jefferson City, Mo. The place to begin is at the beginning. Our starting point, therefore, is in the Bible, 2 Samuel 23:11 — "And after him was Sham- mah the Son of Agee the Hararite." No Agee need be ashamed of this part of the record. The only difficulty is in getting our record linked back to it. There are, no doubt, many missing links. Yet, it seems that no family of the whole earth has a better right than we to assume the connection. Let us claim it and perfect our title if we can. We should, however, remember that our life is not what our ancestors did for us, but it is what each of us makes his or her own life. The first known link is one Matthew Agee, a Protestant who came from France in 1690 because of the Huguenot persecution. Set- tled in Virginia, married, I wish I knew whom, and just where they lived. They had four children: Isaac, James, Anthony and one daughter who married Austin. She and Isaac left no heirs. I do not know that Isaac ever married. James married a Ford and lived near Maysville, in Buckingham Co., Va. His farm and his son Joseph's farm joined and at his death he gave his farm to Joseph. The latter sold both places to Robert Shaw. James and wife lived together 74 years and both died in 1821, aged respectively 96 and 92 years. His house was. a preaching place for 70 years; week-day preaching twice a month and on Sunday by local preachers every two weeks. Bishop Asbury preached at his house. He fed all who came and would stay to eat and yet he was never * 'eat out. " His home was used as a preaching place as long as Joseph, his son, lived in Virginia. Anthony had 11 sons and 1 daughter; James, 6 sons and 6 daugh- ters. I think it quite probable that all the Agees-in the United States descended from these two men. Or I would say from their children whom I shall refer to as the "24." And to more .leadily distinguish them I numbcu' thorn. Every Agce or descendant ought to be able to trace his record back to one of the "24." I would like to know whom Anthony. married and where he lived. All the record I have of his family is given with the names of his children. The '^24." JAMES children: 1 Noah, moved to Ala!)ama. 2 James. 3 J acob. 4 John, married Sicily Ann Hall. 5 Hercules.
