They tend to quicken the ap- prehension of the object contemplated, and through this deepened perception of .one portion of the Faith, produce a clearer and more comprehensive consciousness of the whole. The effect resembies that which results from the study of single stars, which, while causing a more familiar ac- quaintance with the particular luminary, increases also the power of embracing the whole circle of the heavenly bodies. The effect of prayer addressed to One Person of the Blessed Trinity, is not to put aside from our view the other adorable Persons, but rather while giving greater prominence, and increased impressiveness, to the contemplation of the One, to enhance 213887 vi PREFACE, the power of apprehending the mystery of the whole Godhead. It gives occasion, moreover, for the more vivid expression of special needs and aspirations, as a natural consequence of contracting, and so intensifying, the soul’s energies. A reason peculiar to our own times for more definite and intent devotion to Gop the Hoty Gupst,/is to be found in the lamentable defect of faith in Him as a Person, which prevails everywhere, and the consequent absence of personal feelings of devotion towards Him. _ The Office is not intended to supersede the ‘Day Hours,” nor for continual use, but for special seasons, as Whitsuntide, or the Ember Weeks, or for private exercise at any time. The plan of the Office is founded on an ancient form;“biit the composition of its details is new.—It will be seen that a spe- cial intention founded on some particular operation or gift of the Hoty Guosz, is embodied in the devotion for each hour; and that these intentions are so arranged, as to form a sequence exhibiting the on PREFACE. The undersigned desires to bear witness to the love which designed and executed this little work, as well as the benefit which he knows in numerous instances to have resulted from its use. era: Ciewer Rectory, 1868. 213887 CONTENTS.
