From the American Fomological Society's Report for 1887. ADDENDA AND ERRATA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, in the report of its Division of Pomology, is about to issue lists of these Russian fruits, in alphabetical order, prepared by Hon. T. T. Lyon, President of the Michigan State Horticultural Society. Thus, these ''suggestions " of mine have unexpectedly become fixed and unchangeable ; that is, owing to their appearance in the Am. Pom. Soc.'s report, and at the same time by Mr. Lyon in the U.S. report, it will be found unadvisable to make any change except for some glaring mistake. As accuracy is everything in such work, I append a list of typographical errors. For j-oskovoi No. 199 on p. 6 reac voskovoi. " wosavaya No. 200 ' ' 6 " rosovaya. By resolution of youi Society at Grand Eapids, in 1885, 1 was "given the specia work of revising and arranging the nomenclature of American importations of Eussian fruits," but it seemed best not to undertake the work at once. There were too many queries; too many things supposed, but not known. My sugges- tions are now the better for the delay. Since then I have seen Dr. Edward Eegel at St. Petersburg, also his son, Mr. Albert Eegel, who had lately returned from Turkestan, and who was his father's cor- respondent when making that general collection of the apples of Eussia, from which he selected those sent to the United States Department of Agriculture in 1870. The result is that I can now offer you a correct Eussian original of that importation, except two or three names, which can only be vaguely guessed at. It may be remembered that the list sent by Dr. Eegel to Mr. Wm. Saunders, of tlie Agricultural Department at Wash- ington, was lost at the Eussian embassy there, and Mr. Saunders was thus forced to issue it in the form in which it was re- turned to him. 1 also had, last winter, several inter- views with Count Alexeeff, of Moscow, a Eussian physician and scientist, who has aided me very much in this work. Owing to the confusion existing among the names of these Eussian fruits, Prof. Budd and I talked matters over, and I prepared lists of these different importa- tions, and they appeared in a bulletin of the Iowa Agricultural College in 1885, al- though a large number of St. Petersburg varieties interwoven at the last moment,, by Prof. Budd, I must not be held ac- countable for. I have aimed at: 1. A euphonic rendering of the Eussian name, leaving no doubt as to the Eussian letters composing that name. 2. For use in this country, a Eussian name, or a translation, as short and fit as I can suggest, retaining that given in the Department list whenever practicable. I have, however, retained several short Eussian names, viz. : Anis instead of Anisette, Arcad instead of Arcadian, Borovinka instead of Mushroom, Eepka instead of Turnip; also Eeinette rather than Queen. I have also retained the word Naliv, which is applied to the Skvosnoi, Grlasapfel or Klarapfel, or Pomme Trans- parente, and technically does not mean "juicy." Unmusical names like ''Cut Apple" and "Smelling Apple" I have thought best to change. Names in the Eussian column in brackets, are names which do not appear in Eegel's Eusskaya Pomologaya pub- hshed in 1868. i.X 2. EUSSIAN APPLE TREES. NOTES ON THE ABOVE. No. 10 might prove the same as 964 Dep. Autumn Streaked. 243, Nasliednik Nico- lai Aleksandrovitcb. I am at a loss for a short name jor this. Prof. Jankowski and others give Nicolayer as a synonym, but Dr. Eegel never mentions it, neither in his Eussian Pomology nor in any catalogue I have seen. Besides this Andre Leroy states that Nicolayer is said to have originated in the Crimea, while Dr. Eegel gives the St. Petersburg and Baltic coast provinces as the home of the N. N. A. Prof. Budd suggested "Throne" because that personage was heir to the throne, and I at the time agreed; yet I fear such a translation is so free as to be open to censure. 239 Zelenka may be 967 Dep. Zelenoe. 361 Pipka ostrokonetchnaya, the sharply pointed pipka has been erroneously propagated as the Astrachan Pippin. SCIONS EECEIVED BY THE IOWA STATE AGEICULTUEAL COLLEGE, From E. However, except the Vladimir, Bessar- abian, Lutovka and the Lyonskaya, which last comes to us with any rate a Eussian . name, they have German or French names, and so need not be mentioned here. In conclusiou, I would say that we have been in great need of authoritative action in the naming of new foreign fruits. We here have a suggestion to our authoritative body. I have been critical upon what work has been done. 1 cannot refuse tc stand shot. Fair criticism should so far bring to light the faults of this work as to bring about its adoption in modified form at the next meeting of the American Pomo- logioal Society NOTES. •No. 265, Pipka gorkaya is literally the Bitter Pipka, but Mr. Schroeder, of Mos- cow, says it is by no means bitter, and a fine sub-acid apple, which received its name from the town of Gorke, where it originated; and yet if so it should have been named Pipka Goretskaya. 268, Za- koritnoe, which means a dug-out trough, or which might mean a velvety apple, must not be confused with Sacharnaya, Sacharine. 231, Zolotoi arkad, Golden Arcad, must not be mistaken for 188 and 237, Yellow Arcad. 310, Christapfel is a fairly accurate translation of 447 Eosh- destvenskoe. 295, Imperial is not in Ee- gel, but might be a translation of 208, Korolevskoe, or of such a name as Tsars- koe. 350 and 554, Lapouchoe, are trans- lated Burr, but Dr. Alexeeff tells- me that although (to be more exact) Lapukhoe may mean Burr, yet Lapoukhoe (a dis- tinction I can hardly make in English let- ters) means Great Bars. This latter is that described by Eegel, and I have there- fore retained the Eussian name. 413, Skrijapel, as it appears in Eussian, in Eegel, is translated Cross. The termina- tion " apel " the Eussianized form of ^'apfel" betokened German origin, but Germans would not recognize it, and I- had said it was not Cross. Itdidnotthen occur to me that it was Danisn. 437, Saohoiswan, puzzles both Dr. Eegel and Mr. Albert Eegel. The name seems un- known to them, and the Doctor can only suggest that it might be intended for Sacharnoe, Sacharine, or perhaps Zakor- itnoe. The apple must have a name, so I have retained the name Saxonian. 551, Arbuzovskoe I have left as Watermelon, even though it is named after Mr. Arbu- zoff, Mr. Watermelon. 565, Yorgunok, must not be. confused with Yargulek or Vorgulek. 584, 1 have used Erdbeer in- stead of Strawberry as we have so many strawberry apples. 599, Eomnenskoe or Eomenskoe? Eegelin his pomology gives the former, as coming from Eomna, near Moscow; but in his catalogues of late years, he gives Eomenskoe, as though from the town of Eomensk. Mr. Schroe- der, of Moscow, in his Plodovui Sad, in 1886, adheres to Eomnenskoe. Mr. Albert Eegel says he does not know, but says that Eomna is not a fruit growing region, and Eomensk is; leaving the chances in favor of the latter. I mention this to show that accuracy is not always possible.
