J, THE HOMES AND HAUNTS OF Alfred Lord Tennyson POET LAUREATE. BY GEORGE G. NAPIER, M.A. GLASGOW JAMES MACLEHOSE & SONS Jpnbliahcva to the Sntbevsitfl 1892 r-' v\j PREFACE. Being an admirer of the Laureate's genius, in order to understand the beautiful allusions in his poems, I visited Somersby, Cambridge, Clevedon, Farringford, and Aldworth in the summer of 1888. It was suggested to me that my tour and the information I had gathered might interest others, so I printed for private circulation, in the spring of 1889, a small book, illustrating it with photographs I had taken in the several localities, and with others kindly given me by friends. A more generous reception than I had anticipated was accorded to my small volume, accompanied by requests to publish it. vi PREFACE. With a view to doing so, I re-visited the Poet's haunts in Lincolnshire, Surrey, and the Isle of Wight, extending my travels to several other places more or less associated with the Laureate and his work, such as Waltham Abbey, Twickenham, Shiplake, Bolas, and Burleigh, and I now venture to reprint " The Homes and Haunts of Tennyson " in a revised and enlarged form. I am much indebted to the Hon. Hallam Tenny- son, Mr. Horatio Tennyson, and Professor Lushington, who have given me valuable information. My thanks are also due to Mr. d'Eyncourt of Bayons Manor; Mr. Burton of Somersby ; Mr. C. J. Caswell of Horncastle ; Dean Gatty of Ecclesfield ; Rev. Mr. Soper of Somersby ; Rev. Mr. Quirk of Grasby ; Mr. Edward Malan of Blackdown, Somerset, and to many others for their kind help. With regard to the illustrations, let me express my gratitude to Sir George Reid, P.R.S.A., for his PREFACE. vii drawing of the room in which the Poet was born ; Mr. John Murray of Albemarle Street, for the bust of Hallam by Chantrey ; Mr. J. E. Mayall, of Messrs. Mayall & Coy., for the photograph of Tennyson taken in 1864 at Farringford. and the Proprietors of the Graphic ioi the study — Aldworth. The photo- gravures have been engraved by Messrs. Annan of Glasgow. The compilation of the book has been a source of great pleasure to me, and if it chance to make the study of the Poet's works more interesting my object will have been attained. G. G. N.
