THIS Catalogue embraces the books gathered by the late Moses Polock, the oldest Publisher and Bookseller in the United States. He was born in Philadelphia May 14, 1817, and was seventy-two years in the book trade. In 1831 he entered the book store of McCarty & Davis, and eventually succeeded them in business, but devoting himself principally to the buying and selling of Rare and Scarce Americana, and many of the most noted collections in this country have been enriched by nuggets from his storehouse. His business brought him in con- tact with the most noted literary characters of the day. In 1857 he published the first collected edition of the works of Charles Brockden Brown, and it was at this time that he branched ofif into the old and rare book business, being the first dealer in the United States that dealt exclusively in them, particularly Americana, on which subject he became an authority, and was consulted by the leading collectors of the country. He became so infatuated with his business that during the latter years of his life he was known more as a collector than a bookseller, and it was with great reluctance that he was induced to part with any of his treasures ; hence the vast accumulation of out-of-the-way books in Americana that are to be found in this catalogue. The Books from General Washington's I^ibrary were purchased at the sale conducted by me in 1876, Mr. Polock having selected them as being of peculiar interest, relating as they do to Ameri- can history and to Washington's native State, Virginia. The lit- tle batch of letters from eminent English and American States- men connected with the Revolution , and addressed to John Han- cock, came into Mr. Polock's possession through the regular course of his business. The Washington I^etter, in reference to the exchange of Lord Cornwallis, and the survey of a part of the Mount Vernon estate, have for many years been his most treasured possessions, as well as the ivory miniature of Charles Brockden Brown and his wife. All these treasures are, however, now to be found in this Catalogue, and are left to the gentle mercy of the collector, who, we hope, may appreciate them as mtich as their late owner. STAN. V. This copy formerly belonged to Samuel Clarksou. It was u, gift from 'his father, and has his presentation on the fly-leaf. It Is a Tvell-knowu historical fact, that, In consequence of the embargo laid upon American commerce during the Revolutionary War, the Bible became an exceeding scarce book. Mr. Robert Aiiken^ a patriotic printer and bookseller of this olty, undertook at his private expense to supply the constant and urgent demand for the work, by publishing the edition that is now popularly known as "The Aitken Bible." The circumstances attending the publication of this edition, and the discouraging obstacles encountered by Mr. Aitken In accom- plishing Ms laborious task, are vigorously described by an anonymous author of the following interesting article published in the " Freeman's Journal," for November 26, 1782: " 1 can hardly express the feelings I experienced when I found that a com- plete edition of the Hofy Scriptures, in our vernacular tongue, has been printed amongst us. The circumstances attending this arduous task are so extraordi- nary that the faithful historian cannot fall to rank it, both in Its design and execution, amongst the most remarkable civil events of the present Revolu- tion, What may we not expect from the abilities ol this country in respect to literary undertakings, when we consider that this design has been executed in the midst, as it were, of conflagration, murder, brutality, and a general de- struction of the works of nature and art ? " Tkis Edition Of the Holy Scriptures is the only one, that was ever undertaken in America at the expense of an individual, unless we except the German Bible, printed some years ago by Mr. Sower, at a time when this country enjoyed a profound peace. As to Mr. Eliot's ' Indian Bible,' printed many years ago in New England, It is well known that the whole expense was borne by the cor- poration for promoting the (iospei In New-England. How great then are the public Indebted to Mr. Aitkin, who, at the most imminent risque of his private fortune, with veiT little support and patronage, and actuated by a generous zeal for the advancement of the moral interests of mankind, engaged solely In this very expensive and laborious task. What discouraging prospects for the completion of his work must the editor have had from time to time in the course of this cruel and desolating war?— More than twenty towns and villages of note have been made fuel for the flames which British inhumanity has kindled ; the avarice of our enemies has plundered a much greater number; and no less than nine of the capital cities of these states have been in possession of the enemy ; amongst them was Philadelphia, and yet, under all these disadvan- tages, a complete, an accurate, and elegant edition of the Bible was published in this ■uery city, in four years from the time of the evacuation by the British. " The very paper that has received the impression of these sacred books, was manufactured in Pennsylvania, the whole work therefore, is Purely American, and has risen, like the fabled Phoenix, from the ashes of that pile in which our enemies supposed they had consumed the liberties of America:' See paosimile of both titles. 12' AiTKEN's Psalms of David. Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, First President of the United States, the Greatest Man of the Christian Era. Letter, signed. 2 pages, folio, Philadelphia, 5 Dec, 1781. To Abraham Skinner, Commissary General of Prisoners. In fine con- dition. Of the greatest historical importance. In reference to the exchange of pris- oners captured at Yorlctown, Virginia, and Instructing Gen'l Skinner not to consent to the exchange of Lord Cornwallis. We quote the l»tter entire. " Philabblphia, Bth Decern. 1781. 'Sir: " You will proceed Immediately to Elizabeth Town, and, agreeable to Mr. Ijorlngs proposal, endeavour to effect the exchange of such of our Officers as remain unreleased, for part of the British and Foreign lately taken at York in Virginia : " Where a similarity of Rank will not apply, you will proceed, as usual, upon the mode ot compositions,— with this reserve only, that you are, in as delicate a manner as possible, to wave the exchange of Lord Cornwallis for the present, Should the British Commissary refuse to enter upon the Busi- ness on account of the detention of Lord Cornwallis, you will report to me, without loss of time. "General O'Hara, you will observe, is returned as a Brigadier only, when I am pretty confident, that he has been announced in the New York papers as a Major General, by Sir Henry Clinton's appointment. You will make the proper enquiry into the matter " There are sundry Officers and privates remaining prisoners in Canada, whose release 1 wish to effect, and for which purpose I some time ago wrote to General Haldlman, proposing to him to send them to New York, that they might be exchanged from thence,— but I have received no answer— I would wish you to endeavour to fall upon some means of having them in- cluded in the present business " You will find among the prisoners of York and Gloucester, a number of persons who come under no military description, but who are, by the capit- ulation, subjects of exchange. You may set them against any persons of the Class of Citizens who may be in the hands ot the enemy, or against our marine prisoners. " I am Sir '• Your most obt Servt " G, WASHINGTON. Of the province of Pennfylvania. My dear and much respected Brethren, AT a Time when a corrupt and proflituted Mi- tiiltry arc pointing their dcftruAive Machines againd the facred Liberties of the Americans, the Eyes of all Europe are upon t;s; and much Xt expeftcd from the known Refolution and ConduR of the Pinnfylvanians, amongll whom the induftri- ous and refpeftable Body of Tradejmin and Mechanics bear a very large Proportion. The Point io Queftion is. Whether we have Property of our own, or not? whether our Property, and the dear-earoed Fruits of our Labour, are at our own Difpofal, or fliall be wantonly wielled from uj, by a Set of luxurious, abandoned and piratical Hiielin'gs, tJ be appropriated by them to increafe the Numb«r of fuch infamous Penfioners, and fupport their unlimited Extrava- gance? The Refult depends on our dctermiaed Virtue and Integrity, at fo important a C'rilis. The Nature of the detertable TEA-SCHEME, and the pcniicious Confequences of fubmiting to receive it amongfl •s, fubjcft to a Duty payable here, and levied on us with- out our Coufeat, have bten fo judicioufly ftt forth, and demonrtiated by abler Pens, as to leaVe no Room for one of my Capaclt) to undertake it; and, if the trifling Duty itilhric Pence were only to he confidered, it would not be worth our while to oppcife it; nor woith while tor the Mi- liillry fo Jlrcnuoufly to iafiil on. a. id take off, in Liiru there- of, a much gtater Sum payable in Lonan:: But, Hhat by this Breach (though fmall, tl.ey wiH emer the Bulwark of cur facred Libertic!, and will never defill, tili they have Eiaus a Couqucft of the Whole. These aibitrary Meafures we have virtuoudy opjjofed hi- therto: Let ui fur our owvn iakes, fur our Poiieiity's Sake, for our Country's Sake, ftcdfaftly perfevere iu ojpo.,ng to die End. Corruption, Extravagance, and I uxury, are fel- dom found in the Habitations of Trudefmen. Jnduftry, CEconomy, Prudence, and Fortitude, generally inhabit there; and I expeft to fte thefe commendab:c Virtues fhine forth upon the prefent Occafion, with moic than b.'-illiant Lull Let not the artful Infinuation of our Enemies, That the Duty ivill be paid in England, hj the EaJI- India Company, and nol in America, have any Weight amongft us: This is one of their Toils to enfnare us. The Adl of nth of Geo. 3, txpre/ilj lays the afprefaid Duty, on all Teas imported in America from England, payable on its landing here : And no private Contract between the Eaft India Company and the Lords of the Treafury, no Power ujider the Crown, nor even the King himfelf, can difpenfe with, fet afide, difan- nul, or make void fuch a Claufe, or any other in any Aft of Parliament, but the fame Power and Authority by which it was euacled The grand Point in View is, by every Arti- fice to enllave the American Colonies, and to plunder them ot tK«ir Proptrty, and, what is more, their Birth- Right, LIBERTY. It is therefore highly incumbent on us unit- edly, with Heart and Soul, to refill the diabolical DclufiOD, and dejpi/i ihc infamous Piojedors. Bt7T fuppofing the Aft was repealed, and the Tea could be imported free of any Duty, Import, or Cuftom ; yet, is it not a moft grofs and daring Infuit to pilfer the Trade from the Americans, and lodge it in the Bands of the Eaft India Company ? Let us not be prevailed" upon to fuppofe that this will affeft the Merchants only: We need not concern ourfelves with it: It will firft moft fenfibly affeft the Merchants; but it will alfo very materially affeft vou, me, and every Member of the Community. The Eaft-India Company at prefent have Ihipped their defperate Adventure in chartered Bottoms; it was prudent fo to do, or elfe pofli- bly their obnoxious Veflels and Cargoes might become a Sa- crifice to the Refentment of a much injured and exafperated People. The fame Confideration might probably have in- duced them to appoint our Merchants their Agents to fap- poitthe firft heat of Aftion, rightly judging that if we would challifc our Friends vjith Whips, we fhould chaftife their Faftors nuith Si.orpions. But if they can once open the Chan- nel of Trade to themfelves, they will hereafter fliip their Teas in their own Bottoms. They have pafled a grofs Af- front upon our Merchants in appointing fuch, whom we rc- fpeft, Commiffioners. Hereafter, if they fucceed, they will fend their own Faftors and Creatures, elUbliili Houfes a.nongft US Ship US all other Ea^- India Goods; and ii^ order to full freight their Ships, take in other KvacfC Goods at under Freight, or (more probably; fhip cl-.i^ni on their own Accounts to their own Faftors, and under fell our Merchants, till they monopolize the whole Trade. Thus our Merchants are ruined. Ship Building ceafes. They will then fell Goods at any exorbitant Price. Our Artificeis will be unemployed, and every Tradcfman will groan under the dire Oppiefhon. The E^ft India Company, if once they get Footing in this (once) happy Country, will leave no Stone untutrjed to become your Mailers. They are an oppulent Body, and Money or Credit is not wanting amongtl them. They have a defigning, depraved, and defpotic Minillry to alift and fupport them. They themfelves are well veried in Tyran- ny, Plunder, Oppression, and Bloodshed. Whole Provinces labouring under the Diftreflcs of Oppreflion, Sla- very, Famine, and the Sword, are familiar to them. Thus they have enriched themfelves,— thus they are become the moft powerful Trading Company in the Univerle. Be, therefore, cay dear Fellow-Tradefmen, prudent, be watchful,— be determined to let no Motive induce you to favour the accurfed Scheme. Rejeft every Propofal, but a repealing Aa. Let not their baneful Commodity enter your City. Treat every Aidor or Abettor with Ignominy, Con- tempt, ic. and let your whole Deportment prove to the World, " THAT WE WILL BE FREE INDEED."
