'■'■ King Leir" urns entered on the Stationers' Books May 14th, 1594, by Edward White — " The most famous Chronicle History of Leir King of England and his three daughters." The 1605 edition was entered .May Sth, 1605, by Simon Stafford (see Arber). T lie play was, conjecturally, -written late in 1588, or early in 1589, and ivas in all likelihood staged shortly afterwards. The play was published anonymously and has been variously attributed to Kyd, Lodge, Marlowe, Greene and Peek, to the last-named without much cause ; the work is also regarded by many as '■^ too poor" for Marlowe : the " consensus of opinion " divides the auihorsJiip jointly between Greene, Kyd, and Lodge. The traces (almost obliterated) of writing on the title-page are (see Halliivell-Phillipps, '' Outlines," p. 344 j '' first voritten by Mr. William Shakespeare." This note is devoid of authority. // is a iu7ich disputed question as to ivhether this play ivas made by Sliakespearc the foundation of his oi^'ii ^' King Lear''; the iveight of evidence is, I believe, in favoiir of the assumption. But this is not the place for more than the barest mention of matters that are fully discussed elsewhere in icell-knoivn and easily accessible quarters. Mr. J. A. Herbert, of the Manuscript Department of the British Museum, after comparing this facsimile with tlie original reports that " it IS a first-rate reproduction, as will be seen by the scantiness of remarks on the pages." The "faults" noted are as follows: — (i) On the title-page " the device is printed a little too heavily at the extreme right " ; otherwise " the facsimile of the title-page is excellent." (2) There are no "fiaws" as foUoivs — in the ivord '^ of ," line i, Az ; in the "/'' of "fashion," A^, line g from bottom of page ; and no smudge under " an " on Di, line 8. As " too heavy " Mr. Herbert earmarks the "07id" of "proud" on Bi verso, line 16 from bottom; the "word " Gonorill" in Stage-direction, B2 ; the whole of page D2 verso is " a little too heavy " ; also lines 18 — 28 on D4 verso ; on the other hand £3 is printed " a trifie too faint."
