VANDERPOEL John H. Vanderpoel was born in the Haarlemmer-Meer, Holland, November 15, 1857. He was eleven years old wben his father brought the family to Chicago. At the age of fourteen he suffered an injury in a gymnasium from which he never re- covered. He early showed in the public schools an inclination for drawing, and re- ceived instructions from Hermann Han- stein and C. F. Schwerdt. He sought special instruction in classes at the Turner Hall and later in the Academy of Design, where he enjoyed a scholarship established by Mr. Crosby of the famous Crosby Opera House. This school was merged in the Art Institute, and Vanderpoel studied with J. F. Gookins, Lawrence Earle and Henry F. Spread, and became first a distinguished student, and then a junior teacher. He was a teacher in^ the Art Institute for more than thirty years. In 1886 he went abroad, and spent two years in Paris, studying under Boulanger and Lefebvre, and spending the summers in Holland, From that time until his death it was chiefly his influence that gave the Art Institute its reputation as a school of severe drawing. He was a member of the Society of Western Astists, member of the New York Water-Color Society, member and President of the Chicago Society of Artists, and was awarded a bronze medal at St. Louis in 1904. He painted numerous easel pictures and executed some mural paintings, but his reputation rests chiefly upon his suc- cess as a teacher. Upon May 2, 1911, he died suddenly in St. Louis of heart disease. Few men have attained such skill in the teaching of academic drawing, and few men have so possessed the hearts of their friends and pupils.
