Los Angeles has had the most rapid and remarkable growth of all cities in the world. Population in 1915 is approximately 500 000. This city and its environs are the all year round play grounds for the American Business Man and his family. Here may be found the beautiful summer and winter homes of many of America's foremost capitalists, prominent among which is thehome of the late Adolphus Busch in Pasadena. Central Square and the Auditorium. Central Square Park is one of the oldest in the city and is located in the heart of the business section surrounded by massive concrete buildings. Main Post Office. This building occupies the blocii between North Main and New High St. on Temple and cost $1,000,000.00. The entire lower floor is used by the Post Office Department and the upper floors are used by the United States Courts. Customs and Revenue Departments. Alexandria Hotel. Eastlake Park covers fifty acres and contains a large Zoo and Aviary, also a children's playground, lawns, flowers, palms and a beautiful lake. Scene in Eastlake Park. Scene in Westlake Park. This park is located in one of the most exclusive residential sections and is surrounded by palacial homes and modern apartment houses. The park covers thirty-one acres and contains a lake of eleven acres. Balance of Park is thickly covered with Palms, trees, flowers and lawns. Vista of the Lake and Boathouse in Westlake Park. This park is located in one of the residential sections and coniains a large artificial lake on which boating may be enjoyed throughout the year. Elysian Park covers five hun- dred acres of hills, messas and valleys, around which are seven miles of beautiful drives and from its height one may enjoy a view of the city, sur- rounding mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Palm Walk in Echo Park. Echo Park covers thirty acres and also contains beautiful lawns, palms and flowers. Vista of Central Park and the Auditorium. This Auditorium was erected by the Temple Baptist Church as a place of worship and contains one of the largest pipe organs in the west. Also a Banquet Hall of 1.000 seating capacity. The balance of the building consists of business offices. During the week the Audi- torium with seating capacity of 4.000 is used as a theatre. t ** "r. LOS Angeies Mission ChayjcL. 1 hi= mission is not one of the original series of missions erected by the Franciscan Fathers, but was estabhshed as a mission chapel by the good Fathers who came from the San Gabriel Mission for that purpose Gabriel was too great, so for convenience of worship this chapel was built. This Harbor is protected by an enormous breakwater two miles long constructed by the Federal Government. ^pwi^ Long Wharf, Santa Monica This wharf is built out to deep water and affords a connection between sea-going vessels and the railroads which run out to the end and handles additional shipping for Los Angeles. San Gabriel Mission near Los Angeles. Founded 1771. This building is still used for services and contains interesting relics of the history of the state. Mission San Juan Capistrano is situated between San Diego and Los Angeles and was founded in 1776. Millionaire Row. Pasadena. Busch Sunken Gardens. Pasadena. These gardens cover thirty acres and cost half a million dollars. They are regarded as one of the most notable pieces of landscape gardening in the world and are the property of the late Adolphus Busch. the world famed brewer. Thousands of tourists visit these gardens annu- ally as they are open to the public. r-m Hotel Green. Pasadena. This is the most beautiful hotel in America. The Beautiful Residence of Adolphus Busch, Pasadena. Arrowhead Springs Hotel. Virginia Hotel. Poppy Fields in bloom, near Mt. Lowe. Here the beautiful golden California poppy blooms in great numbers. The trip to Mt. Lowe is one of the most inter- esting one-day excursions out of Los Angeles. The elevation is 6.100 feet. As an engineering feat the ascent of Mt. Lowe was very difficult as in one place an elevation of 1.300 feet had to be obtained within a run of 3.000 feet. This was overcome by the Inclined Railway. The Incline Railway up Mt. Lowe. Two cars are connected together by- heavy cables, one ascending while the other descends. This is the steepest railway in the world. Curving Electric Railway up Mt. Lowe. The summit of this mountain is 6.100 feet above sea level and affords a beautiful view of Pasadena and Los Angeles and surrounding country. Colorado Street Bridge crossing Arroyo Seco. Pasadena. Catalina Island is a part of Los Angeles county although separated from the Mainland by twenty-seven miles of ocean. One is well repaid by a trip to Catalina which can be made in three hours from Los Angeles. The wonderful Marina Gardens, the Leaping Tuna and Flying Fish are worth traveling far to see. Avalon irom the Bay. The Gulls and Flying hsh in Avalon Bay. I Ocean Park Natatorium. Ocean Park lies between Santa Monica and Venice and is connected with a sidewalk of cement thirty feet wide and four miles long, flanking which are rows of cottages and excellent hotels. Surf Bathing is enjoyed here every day in the year. The Bath Pike at Long Beach. The beach here is one of the finest in the world, the sand being hard and level, making a speedway for motor enthusiasts. The ing Pavilion and surf is frequented by thousands every day in the year. Long Beach is a large beach city adjacent to Los Angeles having a population of 30,000. i Crowds enjoying the Beach and Surf at Venice. This is the most popular seaside resort of Los Angeles. ^^M^^'^^'f^ A Mammoth Natatorium built on the shores of the Pacific at Venice. Ben-Hur Racing Coaster at Ocean Park built over the Ocean. It affords a ride 4, 200 fed. being 600 icct from end to end and 80 feet high. It is the largest of its kind in the world. 4".:, ^ -^"^Mm. -^P^ Concrete pleasure pier and surf at Long Beach. The surf is frequented by thousands every day in the year and Long Beach is the largest beach city adjacent to Los Angeles having a population of 30,000. Venice by Night. Venice is the pleasure city among the beach resorts of Los Angeles. The Amusement Pier built out into the ocean has a large auditorium, a ship restaurant and amusements of almost every known character. A Mammoth Natatorium at Redondo, wtiich contains a great many swimming pools and costs a quarter million dollars. The largest pool is 70x157 feet and the smallest "the baby pool" is 30x70 feet and two feet deep. All pools are supplied with warm salt water direct from the ocean. Redondo is one of the beach sub- urbs situated between Santa Monica and San Pedro.
