THE HERO OF RED BANK. 7 — Captain Samukl Rinkek. Born 1760. Died 1823. Beautifully executed ivory miniature painted m London, England. In antique gold frame with lock of hair and jewels in back. Size 2 3-4 by 2 1-4. See plate. Captain Rinker served in the Continental Navy, and it was he ivho sivani the Rtver Delaivare to warn the American fortifications at Red Bank of the intended attack by the British in the Revolutionary War. He also served in the Avterican Navy in the War of 18 1 2 as Sailing- Master. He brought Genl. George G. Meade's father and mother home from Spain. In antique gold frame with black margin on glass. Size 19 1-2 x 13 1-2 inches. This is one of the series of portraits drawn by the celebrated St. Memin of eminent Americans, and is one of his life size profiles on pink paper, finished in black crayon, made by the pantograph which produced the human profile ivith mathematical accuracy. The machine of conrse only gave the outline, the finishing being done by the artist in crayon. He remained in this country from lygj until about 181^. This is the original luce floKnciiig to a cloak uwrn by Martha Washington. It is beautifully embroidered in designs the shape of a cornucopia in floivers of white silk. To this interesting relic, Eleanor Parke Cvstis. Washingtotis adopted dai/ghtir. has attached a meino- randnin in her oivji hand, "Lace cloak of Mrs. Wash- ington f give to niY darling Eleanor, E. P. Cusiis." A certificate as to its genuineness will be given to the pur- chasers. Note — This would make a very appropriate and handsome altar cloth for the altar in " the Valley Forge Memorial Chapel," now nearly completed, and erected to the Memory of Genl. Wasliiiigtoii. Portrait of Gen'l Lafayette on each side, with the inscription, " Welcome La Fayette the Nation's Guest and our Country's Glory." This IS one of the pitchers made to commemorate the visit made by General Lafayette to this country It be longed to Nancy Mtddleton, a sister of Arthur Middleton the Signer to the Declaration of Independence, and is sold by his grand-daughter, Emma Jones. 38 — Old Staffordshire Pitcher. 8 inches high. Known a.s "The Farmers Arms." Cream colored background, with the medalHons in black on either .side. On the one a shield supported by a young man and woman, with two scrolls, upon which is inscribed "The Faimers Arms" and "In God our trust," and on the other a rural merrymaking scene. 39 — Old Staffordshire Pitcher. 8 inches high. Known as the "Mariner's Com- pass." Cream colored background, with a medallion in black on one side of a clipper ship, in full sail, and on the other a mariner's compass, over which is in- scribed "Mariners Compass." Used by Mohammedans of High Rank only when they visit Mecca, because they have to pay a certain amount as Tribute. It is on 95 leaves, or 190 pages. Illuminated with gold borders and red line around every page, and numerous illuminations throughout the text. It also has two beautiful miniatures, in colors, of Mecca and Medina. Contemporary half morocco, silk sides, worn. Size 5 1-2x4 inches. This book zvas found in Clialchis, Greece, being left there by the Turkish Pasha who zvas Governor during the time the Turks ruled Greece. It zvas obtained from his housekeeper. Signed, size 11x9 inches. 12 Lot §g — Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney. ■3 LEUTZE, EMANUEL. Born in Wurteniberg 1816. He painted, besides many portraits, a number of important historical scenes relating to America. His portraits are noted for their truthfulness to nature. The painting portrays the Eminent Jurist at the age of 83, at a period when the country was involved in civil war, and at a time when he was called upon to render de- cisions of the most vital importance in reference to the constitutional powers of the States. This portrait is well known, and enjoys a reputation of being the finest portrait of Chief Justice Taney extant. It was painted for the family of James M. Campbell, the noted lawyer of Baltimore, who married Judge Taney's daughter, and was purchased at the sale of the effects of Mr. Campbell by his relative, the late Col. Frank M. Etting, of Philadelphia. 59 — Roger Brooke Taney, Chief Justice of the U. S. Signed. Canvas, size 59 x 46 inches. See plate. This was purchased by a relative at the Sale of Mr. Etting' s effects April ij, igi6. He placed in storage, but has since found that his house is too small to accom- modate it. An exquisite miniature portrait by an Artist whose ivorks are exceedingly scarce. This was purchased by the late Col. Thos. Bass Otis painted two portraits of this great patriot. One hangs in Independence Hall, ivhich was painted from a copy of Sharp's engraving, by Thos. Thompson, an English artist, and the present portrait, which ivas copied from the original by Romney, otvned by Dr. Thos. Coopir, of S. C. His executors gave per- mission to Bass Otis to copy it for Dr. Wm. Wright, the former owner of the painting in question. 61 — Ernestine, Rose. Oval. Size 16 x 13 inches.
