PRINCE PAUL TROUBETZKOY Paul TroubeTzkoy, second son of Prince Pierre and Princess Ada Troubetzkoy, was born in Italy February 16, 1866, at Intra, Lago Maggiore. From a child lie mani- fested a strong inclination for drawing and modeling. He was, however, only re- luctantly allowed to study art, for bis father, whose eldest son, Pierre, had decided to de- vote himself to painting, had planned for his second son a military career. He began the study of art in Milan. He was at first divided between painting and sculpture, for a while studying with the painter, Ranzoni, but finally deciding to adopt sculpture as his medium. Convent- ional instruction was brief and desultory. It included two months with Ernesto Baz- zaro, at the end of which he set up a studio of his own and began to work independ- ently. His first appearance of importance was at the Palazzo di Brera, in 1886, when he ex- hibited the figure of a horse. His work was well received at the various Italian exhi- bitions but bis first real public recognition came at Paris in 1889, when he was award- ed Honorable Mention. In 1893 he was well represented at the World's Columbian Exhibition at Chicago. From this exhibi- tion the Golden Gate Art Museum of San Francisco purchased several of his bronzes. At Rome in 1894 his "Indian Scout" was awarded the gold medal and purchased for the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. During these early years of work in Milan he was very productive and wide in range. For, although he continued to add to his success as a sculptor of animals, he also turned his attention to portraiture and be- gan to execute what became a long series of diverse and spirited presentations. In 1897 he left Italy to settle in Moscow. His success in his father's country was im- mediate. His reception soon led to his ap- pointment as professor of sculpture in the Imperial Academy of the Fine Arts in Mos- cow, a post which he filled for two years. He continued as productive as he had been in Milan, modeling many searching and vigor- ous portraits of persons of distinction. Dur- ing his first summer in Russia and at sub- sequent times he visited Tolstoy, whose friend he quickly became, and modeled several powerful portraits of the count. At the Exposition Universelle at Paris in 1900 his triumph was conspicuous, his work exhibited bringing him highest honors in the Russian section. The following year he won the competition, open to the world, for the heroic equestrian statue of Alex- ander III, which now occupies an imposing place in St. Petersburg, having been formal- ly dedicated June 5, 1909. After several years' residence in Russia, Troubetzkoy went to Paris, where he has since resided, in the rue Weber, not far from the Bois de Boulogne. Here he still keeps his numerous pets — these have included from time to time, bears, wolves, sheep and dogs of many kinds — in the modeling of which he has had such marked success. Prince Troubetzkoy has been a Chevalier de la L6gion d'Honneur since 1900, and is now Officier. He won the Grand Prix, Paris, 1900, when he was also honored by the State's purchase of several works, including the Tolstoy on horseback, for the Luxembourg. He has also won gold medals in Rome, Dresden, Berlin, and elsewhere, and is represented in museums of Rome, Venice, Leipzig, Berlin, Milan, Dresden, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris, San Francisco and other important cities. He is a member of the Soci6t6 Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Soci6t6 Nouvelle, the Soci6t6 du Salon d'Automne in Paris, the Dresden and Munich Secession Societies and the International Society of Sculptors, Painters, and Gravers of London. Prince Troubetzkoy's connection with America is intimate, his mother being an American and his brother, Pierre, the por- trait painter, now residing in New York City. His subjects, drawn so widely from different nations as to give international significance to his work, also include many Americans of prominence. Prince Trou- betzkoy visits Chicago during the present exhibition.
