FOREWORD HIS unique and truly extraordinary collection commences with the autograph of Antonio del Pollajuolo (born in 1426), and closes with that of Millais (born in 1829, died in 1896), thus cover- ing a period of four hundred and seventy years in the history of the world's art. It is quite impossible to exaggerate the rarity of the auto- graphs of the early painters; for in many instances their extant letters can be counted upon one's fingers. No other collection of anything like equal importance is in existence. The finest of all collections of artists' autographs hitherto known was that of Herr Meyer-Cohn, and the splendid pieces which rendered it so renowned are incorporated in this collection. The British Museum, which amongst all the European national collections is by far the richest in autographs, pos- sesses no example of any description of no less than twenty- one of the famous artists represented in this superb series; moreover, in several other instances the British Museum con- tains merely signatures, whereas holograph letters will be found in this collection. Gives him particulars of his negotiations for the purchase of a house and land either at Piambino, Voghera, or Castelfranco. Is pressed to go and view two estates at Vossega, which yield a profit of 5 per cent., but it is so far that he is not inclined to do so. Cannot give an answer to his invitation until one of the above transactions is completed. Has bought the house of which he has told him several times; the matter will be concluded by Easter Day, Prays God for the health of his family, etc. (Signed) " Paolo Caliari, painter." Monsieur Valavez must, by now, have left Paris; is grieved to lose the best correspondent in the world. Does not wish to put M. de Puy to the trouble of writing, but will be grateful for occasional copies of the best public news sheets. Regrets that he cannot do the same but no news is published there, except reports by charlatans, unworthy of a gentleman's notice. Has nothing to relate, having written at length in his last letter to M. Valavez concerning the attempt of the Dutch upon Kildrecht, and the defeat of the King of Denmark by Tilly. The Dominican Michael Ophovio who was in prison at Heusden and the Hague, and in peril of his life for having tried to persuade Van Kessel, Governor of Heusden, to some treason, was consecrated bishop of "Boldveq" on the 13th September has happily exchanged the halter for the mitre. (Signed) " Pietro Pauolo Rubens." See Facsimile 18 PIETRO PAUOLO RUBENS Holograph Letter (in Italian), signed, 3 pages, folio; Madrid, 22 April, 1629. A superb letter. Has received his letter of the 5 th February, under cover to the Ambas- sador of Flanders, wonders where it has been detained so long. Rejoices to 8 J. PEARSON & CO. hear that he and his brother are in good health; also that M. Preise is well and remembers him; he sent the latter his portrait before leaving Flanders, hopes it arrived safely. Fears the bad season will prevent him from going to visit him in Provence, may be obliged to go elsewhere, but may pass through Paris first. Thanks him for the fine heroic inscription devirtu Rusellanis, the author should compose another showing that external victory is more glorious than that which is intestine. Caesar's veni vidi via might apply to his most Christian majesty. The articles of the treaty are infamous to Spain, the Ministers could hardly threaten war in more insulting terms than they treat of peace. The Duke of Saxony always seems to be valiant against Spain, but succumbs easily to the arms of France. Has heard of the capture of the fleet from new Spain, due to good fortune rather than courage, the victors are ashamed not to have taken a single prisoner. It is reported that the general and officers are to be sent, under arrest, from Seville for trial. The fleet was very rich for it brought the extraordinary grant from Peru, as well as the usual treasure. The caravel and galleon from Goa, which it was feared had also fallen into the hands of the Dutch, have arrived safely, which is some con- solation. Sends remembrances to the Abbot of St. Ambrose, and M. de la Motte. An important Manuscript admirably illustrating his care in ascertaining details for his pictures. Three tiny and pleasing drawings (of two ships and a ball) by the master illustrate the text. " Attention must be paid here whether the log is thoroughly checked [as to its length] then take a sounding in the Helder logs on one side or the other (of the ship). It lies from above, taking all things into consideration, like a mark attached to the prow to which the rigging is hooked and many other things besides. If, on the contrary, the ship's prow slopes inwards on the upper side at its greatest width, the recording of the (distance) must be considered from the above point of view. See that the ball is at a certain distance from the mark (before throwing it) from the ship. — Translation. The writer was " the great marine painter to Charles II." He surpassed 14 J PEARSON & CO. his father (the elder Van der Velde) and all his contemporaries, and attained in sea-pieces, a perfection universally allowed to be unequalled. Accompanying the Manuscript is a letter from T. B. Hardy in which he says: " Herewith is the very interesting bit of Win. Van de Velde's writing — with sketches of two boats. He was the great marine Painter to Charles II, indeed one may probably say, with truth, the greatest marine painter that ever lived." There is no autograph of this famous Dutchman in the British Museum. 34 JEAN BERAIN Born 1638, died 171 1 Receipt, signed, 1 page, 4to, on vellum; Paris, October 20, 1687. To Constantin Huygens (Junior), private secretary to William III of Orange (afterwards King of Great Britain). " I have spoken with my lord the grand pensionary Boreel, who has asked me for a list of 26 subjects, which among his various annexations and con- quests of places (or strongholds) have proved to 'be most conducive to in- creasing the reputation of the East India Company. . . . Herr Boreel has also noted down a few where the Indian potentates had to surrender army, lands, 5, PALL MALL PLACE 15 and realm to the Company through the infringement of the covenant to make an end of contracts. ... If such be my lord's opinion, then Herr Boreel must also be of opinion that the pieces might well be large and also that it is right and proper that the picture should be large. ... I willingly acknowledge that I am not so well informed concerning large pictures as concerning other things, therefore I will, if agreeable to his Highness, thus have pictures executed by other famous good masters, of historical scenes in the small galleries and rooms. . . . Should Herr Boreel also summon me to the Hague in order to have more leisure and to meet the others who are engaged in con- sultation about this business, to discuss the matter further, and to draw a few sketches, etc." In a postscript the writer states: " I have painted the water slightly over, in the hope that it may please you better so and I send you besides 2 sheets in order that you can place them together to make something of them, if any- body at least among the gentlemen wishes to compare them." This fine letter is endorsed with De Verwer's cypher (painted) as found on his pictures. S. Savry engraved a naval battle by A. Verwer. Perhaps this naval battle is the very one referred to in the present letter in which Verwer says " he has overdone the painting of the water." There is no autograph of A. de Verwer in the British Museum. 36 PIETRO DANDINI Born c. 1646, died 171 2 Holograph Letter, signed, 1 page, folio; Firenze, Nov- ember, 1 68 1. 16 J. Relative to his painting " Le Port de Cette." FRANQOIS MILLET Born 18 14, died 1875 Holograph Letter, signed, 3 pages, 4to; Paris, June 1, 1838. Addressed to Monsieur Le Marquand. A superb letter in which he speaks of his defeat for the Prix de Rome. His professor, who he at first imagined had something to do with his defeat 46 J. PEARSON & GO. because of his absence for some time, gave instructions the next day that he, Millet, was to be sent to him as soon as possible. The professor sympathized with him and encouraged him to remain with him, and stated that he could do so free of charge, and he would assist him to gain the next year's " prix." Millet states that at first he was determined not to enter again for the prize, but upon second thoughts considers that determination foolish, and states " why should I renounce the pleasure of dreaming among those beauti ful ruins where we shall see, walking in the twilight, the long-draped majestic forms coming again to think over the affairs of the Senate with one of these forms conducting us." Millet has here drawn a sketch of the scene illustrating this impression. The painter and his companion — the former with his artist's materials under his arm — are seen listening to a re-incarnated Senator, who is pointing to a ruin behind which a procession of Senators appears. Millet closes his letter by a request that his friend will be careful not to mention to anyone the fact that he is remaining with his professor free of charge. # * # This is a highly important and probably the finest letter of Millet's extant. It was written at the period of his studies in Paris under Delaroche, and refers to his competing for the famous Prix de Rome. The name of the kindly professor is not given, but it was Paul Delaroche. This letter is also a direct refutation of the account given in his life by Julia Cartwright of the famous artist's endeavour to win the coveted Prix de Rome. The account in that work is given as follows: "He (Millet) was at his wits end for money, and at one time he had to give up going to Delaroche's atelier for want of means to pay the yearly fee of ioo francs. " The master missed him from his accustomed place and sent him word to come and see him. Millet obeyed. ' Why do you never come to the atelier now?' the painter asked in a friendly tone. 'Because sir, I am unable to pay the fees,' replied Millet. 'Never mind that!' replied Delaroche. 'I do not wish you to leave. Come all the same, and I will speak to Poisson (the porter of the studio). Only say nothing about it to the other fellows, and draw just what you like — big subjects, figures, studies, whatever you fancy. I like to see your work; you are not like the rest of them; and then I wish to speak to you about some work in which you can be of use to me.' " Millet was touched by this unexpected kindness on the painter's part, and 5, PALL MALL PLACE 47 went back to the atelier. But the historical compositions in academic style that were then in fashion seemed to him every day more wearisome. An artist of his power could not fail to produce striking work; but in the conventional figures and heavy sombre colouring of Millet's compositions at that period, it was difficult to discern the germ of his future greatness. Still he persevered, and in the summer of 1838 he entered the lists for the Prix de Rome. The originality of his composition attracted Delaroche's notice and pricked the master's conscience, for he had already promised to use his interest on behalf of one of his favourite pupils, a student named Roux; so he sent for Millet and said to him : 'You wish to win the Prix de Rome?' ' Certainly,' replied Millet, ' or I should not have entered my name.' 'Your composition is very good,' said Delaroche; 'but I must tell you that I am anxious to see Roux nominated this time. Next year I will promise to use all my influence on your behalf.' "This frank declaration was enough for Millet. He left Delaroche's atelier for good, and determined never again to look to others for help or advance- ment, but to rely solely on his own efforts." There is no autograph of this famous Frenchman in the British Museum. There is also an interesting letter from Millais, relative to the illness of Sir Edwin Landseer, and containing his opinion that if he (Landseer) died, his remains should be interred in Westminster Abbey or St. Paul's Cathedral. References to book illustration also occur. The letters are illustrated with portraits of the artist and proof impressions of his book-illustrations. £ l 3° CHISWICK PRESS : PRINTED BY CHARLES WHITTINGHAM AND CO.
