HOE & CO., PRINTING PRESS, MACHINE, AND SAW MANUFACTURERS. Patent Type-Revolving Printing Machine. The Type Revolving Printing Machine, manufactured by our firm, was invented by Col. Richard M. Hoe. It Is, as its name indicates, on the rotary principle ; that is, the form of type is placed on the surface of a horizontal revolving cylinder of about four and a half feet in diameter. The form occupies a segment of only about one-fourth of the surface of the cylinder, the remainder being used as an ink-distributing surface. Around this main cylinder, and parallel with it, are placed smaller impression cylinders, varying in number from two to ten, according to the size of the machine. The large cylinder being put in motion, the fotm of types is carried successively to all the impression cylinders, at each of which a sheet is introduced and receives the impression of the types as the form passes. Thus as many sheets are printed at each re- volution of the main cylinder as there are impression cylinders around it. One person is required at each impression cylinder to supply the sheets of paper, which are taken at the proper moment by fingers or grippers, and after being printed are conveyed out by tapes and laid m heaps by self-acting flyers, thereby dispensing with the hands required in ordinary machines to receive and pile the sheets. The grippers hold the sheet securely, so that the thinnest newspaper may be printed without waste. The ink is contained in a fountain, placed beneath the main cylinder, and is conveyed by means of distributing rollers to the distributing surface on the main cylinder. This surface being lower, or less in diameter than the form of types, passes by the impression cylinder without touching. For each impressing cylinder there are two inking rollers, receiving their supply of ink from the distributing surface of the main cylinder, which rise and ink the form as it passes under them, then again fall to the distributing surface. Each page of the paper is locked up on a detached segment of the large cylinder, which segment constitutes its bed and chase. The column rules run parallel with the shaft of the cylinder, and are consequently straight, while the head, advertising and dash rules have the form of segments of a circle. The column rules are in the shape of a wedge, with the thin part directed toward the axis of the cylinder, so as to bind the types securely. These wedge-shaped column rules are held in their place by tongues projecting at intervals along their length, and sliding in rebated grooves cut crosswise in the face of the bed. The spaces in the grooves between the column rules are accurately fitted with sliding blocks of metal, even with the surface of the bed ; the ends of these blocks being cut away underneath to receive a projection on the sides of the tongues of the column rules. The locking-up is effected by means of screws at the foot of each page, by which the type is held as securely as in the ordinary manner upon a flat bed, and is much less liable to accident. The speed of these machines is limited only by the ability of the feeders to supply the sheets. The Four Cylinder Machine is run at a rate of over ten thousand per hour; the Six Cylinder Machine, fifteen thousand an hour; the Eight C)'linder Machine, twenty thousand ; and Ten Cylinder Machine, twenty-five thousand. This system combines the greatest speed in printing, durability of machinery, and ecpnomy of labor. For dimensions, etc., see following pages. Grand, Broome, Sheriff. This Machine is designed to work exclusively from stereotype plates, and, as its name implies, prints both sides of the sheet at one operation. Two impression cylinders and two form cylinders are placed side by side in a horizontal frame, the impression cylinders occupying the centre, with the form cylinders at each end. The two forms are secured to their cylinders and inked in much the same manner as in our Type-Revolving Machines, the fountains and distributing cylinders being placed at the ends of the press. The sheets are supplied by feeders in the usual manner. They are delivered by a feeding cylinder to the first impression cylinder, whence they go to the second impression cylinder and are then conducted right and left alternately to a sheet flyer at each end. A Two-Feeder Machine will print, per hour, from 4000 to 5000 perfected eight-page sheets of ordinary size, or will print and cut from 8000 to 10,000 perfected four-page sheets of ordinary size. The No. 4 Machine occupies a space about eighteen feet long, eight and a half feet wide, and six and a half feet high. A Four-Feeder Machine will print double the above quantity, or from 8000 to 10,000 eight-page sheets and from 16,000 to 20,000 four page sheets of ordinary size per hour. DIMENSIONS AND PRICES. HOE & CO., PRINTING PRESS, MACHINE, AND SAW MANUFACTURERS. Type Revolving Book Perfecting Press. As the name indicates, this is a rotary machine the forms being secured on the surface of two large horizontal cylinders. This construction as it does away with the reciprocating motion, admits of a greater speed in printing than any other, and the distribution of the ink also is more perfect, there being room for from six to twelve inking rollers to each form. The machine is equally well adapted to letterpress stereotype and wood-cut work, and will print from 1500 to 2000 perfected sheets per hour, the only limit to its speed being the capability of the feeder to supply the paper. As it dispenses with the registering apparatus, and is furnished with a self-acting sheet flyer only one attendant is required (or a press of the largest size. DIMENSIONS AND PRICES. Flat Bed Perfecting Press. In this machine the bed has a reciprocating motion, the paper being transferred automatically from the first impression cj'linder to the second, and then conducted by tapes to the self-acting sheet-flyer. The second cylinder is provided with reels holding a large roll of facing blanket, which, as it becomes soiled by the set-off from the first side of the sheet, is rolled up and a fresh portion brought into use. When so ordered, an additional feed-board, from which a set-off sheet may be fed to the second impression cylinder, is furnished, the two sheets being thrown out together on the fly-board and separated by hand ; or, if desired, a sheet-flyer is added for the set-off sheet, which is then separated automatically from the printed sheet and flown on a separate board. The machine is made very strong and heavy throughout, and will work from type, stereotype, or electrotype, with equal facility. The stone is placed in the traveling bed, on a plate which is adjustable vertically to suit the varymg and uneven thickness of the stones, and these can also be moved laterally by set screws, without altering their height. The feed-board is furnished with adjustable guides and an improved pointing apparatus. The impression cylinder gears into a rack on the side of the bed, and is never altered in height, the stone being set instead. The register obtained is perfect. There is no dan- ger of the stones breaking or scratching, the cylinder having rubber cushions, to compensate for any unevenness in their surface, and the points of the fingers lying in recesses out of reach. The form rollers have bearings adjustable by set screws, so as to give the desired pressure, and they are driven by gearing instead of by surface friction, which prevents any wiping of the ink upon the stone, and allows the use of riding rollers to increase the distribution. The damping apparatus is self-acting, the water being supplied from a reservoir to the wetting rollers like ink from a fountain, and these rollers are also driven by gearing so as to touch lightly on the stone. These machines have six, seven, or eight form-inking rollers, according to size, and are arranged to run the bed once, twice, or three times to each impression, as may be desired ; thus giving a distribution proportionate to the quality of the work. They will also roll any number of times without an impression while " inking up," to avoid running through waste sheets.
