SUPPLEMENT NO. I. CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARD A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HIGHER EDUCATION OF WOMEN Supplement No. i. Compiled by a Committee of the Association of Collegiate Alumnaa. 1PSTON; The Trustees of the Public Library 1 905. PREFACE. In 1897 the Boston Public Library published for the Association of Collegiate Alumnae Contributions towards a Bibliography of the Higher Education of Women, compiled by a committee of librarian members of the Association. The bibliography herewith submitted has been prepared on a similar plan, and supplements the earlier work. It records titles to the end of 1902 and includes many of an earlier date than 1897. Experi- ence has not shown that such specialized bibliographical work can be done, as indexing can, co-operatively, and on the editor has fallen the compilation of most of the material. She has, however, to thank her co- laborers for a large share of the titles dated 1897 and 1898, and is espe- cially indebted to Miss Cora B. Perrine of Chicago University, who has rendered able assistance up to the date of printing. The editor regrets that the bibliography is so largely a compilation, and that many titles have been recorded without having been seen. Such a method has seemed unavoidable, since the work has been done away from the large library centres. The plan of the previous work has been followed, with perhaps a slight exception in the direction of industrial education, including, all spe- cial education which should fit a woman for a self-supporting career. Class I, General and Historical, contains many articles in which the term "Higher Education of Women" is used relatively, not in the sense of being" collegiate and professional education. (The arguments for and against a step forward seem to have been about the same in any stage of woman's education.) Class II, Physical and Mental Status, shows how the clamor of twenty years ago against women's fitness has died down, doubtless owing to the numbers of vigorous college-bred women among us today. Class VI, Occupations and Opportunities for College-bred Women, has in this supplement been combined with class IV, Special Education and Work, thus putting the career and the training for the career to- gether. Collections of biographies of women who have followed special careers, such as lawyers, etc., have been included, while individual biog- raphies have been omitted. In Class VII, Colleges and Universities which admit Women, no at- tempt has been made to record all the publications of individual colleges. Only such publications as relate especially to women at each college have been taken, though doubtless the list of these is very incomplete. All through the work the line has been drawn with difficulty between material bearing on education and that touching on social and political questions only. Class VIII, Societies, and Class IX, Periodicals, include many organizations and serials general in scope, although those which professedly relate to woman's suffrage or other special topics have still been denied admittance. Of the general societies only collected papers and similar publications likely to contain material on education are in- cluded, year books, etc. +t being ruled out. The impossibility of obtaining from certain societies^ information as to their publications accounts " for meagreness of record in such cases. • It is not thought that the present work exhausts the field, for it is well understood that any one who claims to have made either a complete or an accurate bibliography is doomed to discomfiture. EDITH E. CLARKE, Editor. University of Vermont, Billings Library, Burlington, Vermont, January 18, 1905. The Public Library has assumed only the charge of printing the fol- lowing list. It cannot hold itself responsible for the completeness, cor- rectness, form or arrangement of the titles ; but to such of them as are to be found in its collections it has added the shelf -number by which they may be obtained.
