SHEPHERD Published by Silas H. Shepherd, Henry A. Crosby and George C. Nuesse Wisconsin Grand Lodge Committee on Masonic Research Milwaukee, 'Wisconsin December 6, 1920 RESEARCH PAMPHLET NO. i , I V t i ^ ^ V^^ns.^'^, h / -B C, e S^i-j I FOREWORD NO phase of Masonic study is more fasci- nating than to acquire an intimate knowledge of its books, their authors, or the several editions of the more important works, such as the "Book of Constitutions," "The Pocket Companion," Preston's "Illustra- tions of Masonry," the "Old Charges" and the Webb "Monitors." Several lists of the more important standard works have been made available to the general reader, and the "Masonic Curriculum," by G. W. Speth; "Suggestions for Lodge Li- braries," by Jos. E. Morcombe; "Traveling Masonic Libraries," by N. R. Parvin, may be supplemented by trade catalogues of the Macoy Publishing and Masonic Supply Co., William Tait, W. H. Miner Co., George Ken- ning & Son, Spencer & Co., and others. The following list of bibliographies and catalogues, and the few references to works containing information of bibliographical na- ture may be welcome to those who realize the importance of securing this information, not only for their own pleasure, but that they may be better prepared to lead those who are tak- ing their first steps in the pursuit of Masonic knowledge. It may also be of assistance to lodge librarians with limited experience. The compilation of the present list is the first of its kind since H. J. Whymper's "Cata- logue of Bibliographies, etc.," issued in 189L Only 100 copies of that work were printed, consequently it is very scarce and practically unavailable. As this list is tentative, the com- mittee requests that its attention be called to any errors or omissions so that the final com- pilation may contain reference to every Ma- sonic catalogue published in the English lan- guage. "Bibliographie der Freimaurerischen Litera- tur," by August Wolfstieg, published by A. Hopfer, Burg, B. M. 1911-1913, 3 volumes, is the most complete Masonic bibliography ever compiled. It is printed in Roman type, with the titles and authors of the listed works given in the language they were written in, which makes the compilation of value even to those with a knowledge of English only. It was published at 73.50 marks, but is now quoted to American buyers at 850 marks. Claude Antoine Thory, a French Masonic writer of the Nineteenth century, included in his "Acta Latomorum" (1815), a bibliography of the principal Masonic works from 1717 to that date, and was the pioneer in this field. H. J. Whymper says: "The bibliography in Thory's Acta Latomorum is the first genuine bibliography we possess." Dr. George B'. F. Kloss, a distinguished Ger- man Masonic writer, compiled "Bibliographie der Freimaurerie und der mit ihr in Ver- bindung gesetzten geheimen Gesellschaften" in 1844. This contained a list of over six thousand works in many languages, with critical notes on the more important, making it of great value even at present. The recent production of Wolfstieg's Bib- liography culminates a series of bibliographical works in France and Germany of which Rein- hold Taute's "Maurerische Bucherkunde" (Leipzig, 1896), and Paul Fesch's "Bibliog- raphic de la Franc-Maconnerie" (Paris, 1912) are good examples. An English translation of Wolfstieg's work would receive a warm welcome, but a com- plete and thorough bibliography of Masonic literature in English would be of greater value if it contained such fragmentary notes as have been given by Hughan, Dring, Carson, Whymper, Parvin, Mackey and others. Many of the catalogues listed in this com- pilation are out of print and scarce. Copies of those marked # are possessed by the writer, and have only been acquired after several years of search and at considerable expense. Carson's "Masonic Bibliogra- phy" (1874) is a more complete and longer work. 10. Carson, Enoch T. # Masonic Bibliography, by Enoch T. Car- son, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1874. 224 pages. From A to Picart. Unfortunately, this work was never completed from Picart to Z. Its title is misleading, as it is a bibliography of the works in the Masonic Library of Brother Carson. His Library being one of the best of its time, it is a very valu- able work, and made extremely so by the com- prehensive and illuminating notes. 11. Carson, Enoch T. Mr. Gowans was a dealer in second hand books and had an immense stock. 14 36. This catalogue is superior in some respects to the 1883 edition. The reproduction of title pages makes it very useful to the student. The distinguished compiler was an ardent book lover, and it was through his ability and zeal that Iowa took a foremost place in Freemasonry. 18 57. Iowa Masonic Library # Catalogue of the Works on Freemason- ry and Kindred Subjects, in the Library of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, A. F. & A. Masons. Fifth edition. (1849, '54, '58, '73) June 1883. He had access to the Li- brary of the Supreme Council and many others, but it was the books which he deemed necessary for his private collection which best reflect the man. It appears strange to the collector of to- day to see * Acta Latomorum" quoted at $3, and the "New Book of Constitutions" of 1738, at $20. 67. "The Books and Manuscripts con- sisted of over two thousand , works, mainly in the French language. Richard Spencer was one of the foremost promoters of the Masonic book trade, and his catalogues are of great interest. The older ones are now very scarce. The firm of Spen- cer & Co. still do a large business in Masonic books. The first Richard Spencer published Masonic books in 1799. "Early in the next century he was succeeded by the second Rich- ard Spencer, his nephew. He in turn was succeeded by Walter Spencer, his (the second Richard's) son, and since about 1878, the firm has been known as 'Spencer & Ce.* " 104. Bangs, Merwin & Co., New York, 1867. 17 pages. This is one of the many ''Auction Cata- logues" which were issued during the last half of the Nineteenth century. These old cata- logues are of interest in showing many works which are now extremely scarce advertised for sale. At present it is customary for the one desiring a rare book to advertise for it. Such rare works as Preston's Illustrations of Masonry (2nd edition) and Thory's Acta Latomorum are advertised in this catalogue. This was the collection of the Masonic his- torian and writer, G. W. Steinbrenner. 111. Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdic- tion, U. S. A. # Catalogue of the Library of the Su- preme Council, 33°, for the S. J. of the U. S. Washington, D. C, 1880. 42 pages. 112.
