BROWN, Organist of the First Presbyterian Church, Trenton, N. J. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY REV. H. M. BROWN. PUBLISHED By BROWN BROS., Trenton, N. J. TRENTON, N. J. : The John L. Murphy Publishing Co., Printers. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1889, by BBOWN BEOS., In the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington. INTRODUCTION. Many useful books have been written, with the design of assisting the pastor in his work of preparation for the Sabbath, but none has heretofore been offered which would serve as a guide to the discrim- inative use of hymn tunes. It has been a source of regret to many clergymen that they were unable to estimate and make use of the hymn tunes with the same confidence and skill with which they selected the hymns, and have therefore been compelled either to trust to chance or keep within a limited number of tunes, which experience had rendered familiar. It is obvious that every hymnal is necessarily more or less imper- fect. It must contain many tunes which, in their nature, are experimental. The compilers hoped they would prove valuable additions to the musical literature of the church, but, through rythmical defects, intricacy, or want of inspiration, most of them can never be acceptable or of permanent value. There will also be found many tunes which have outlived their usefulness ; and a large number, which, although of good form and unquestionable dignity, evidently lack strength and inspiration. It has been estimated that the average congregation cannot become thoroughly familiar with more than one hundred tunes. If this estimate is correct, it becomes at once evident that careful selection is necessary for the improvement of congregational singing. The attention of the people will thus be systematically concentrated on the best tunes. This little hand-book has been compiled, in an impartial and unbiased spirit, by a church organist of experience and acknowledged ability, solely with the design of affording to clergymen a practical and suggestive work of reference. I am confident that, by careful reference to its pages when selecting the list of hymns, the pastor will find that he controls and directs even the musical part of the service. Therefore, from the standpoint of a Christian pastor, I com- mend this work to my ministerial brethren of various denominations. H. M. Beown. (3) DESCRIPTIVE INDEX OF HYMN TUNES. A. ABERYWITH S. M.
