EXETER : WILLIAM POLLARD & Co. Ltd., PRINTERS, NORTH STREET. 1 99.1- DA 6 10 ^ 4 i^[ /ye /y^i^n^ MDL VV—MDCVIII. PREFACE. Kilmington is a small Parish in East Devon, area 1,760 acres, population (i8gi), 558. Ecclesiastically, it is a Parochial Chapelry annexed to the Vicarage of Axminster, in the Rural Deanery of Honiton, and the Archdeaconry of Exeter. The old volume of Church Wardens' Accounts wras in the Vestry, and by the courtesy of the Vicar and Churchwardens, I have been allowed to transcribe, and so to preserve an interesting record of parish life during a most important era of our history in Church and State. The Register contains ICX) pages of coarse paper. The Parchment Cover (see below), is well worthy of notice. My notes at the end of each year's accounts lay no claim to Antiquarian accuracy, but may occasionally explain some local phrase or topic. Any remarks on words that have been misunderstood or unexplained will be most welcome. There is nowhere any mention of the Vicar of Axminster, but we occasionally find references to Clergymen, probably his Curates, e.g., to " Sir " Colman p. 17; "Sir" Wyllyam Abbot, pp. 22, 23; "Sir" Addis, p. 33; Mr. Cooke, pp. 49, 50, 51, and Mr. Sle, p. 87. (The abbreviation [p], used for "Sir," is also used for the first syllable of "servyng," p. 12, and in "serve," pp. 22 and 23. It cannot be exactly reproduced in printers' type.) The only Gentry named are Mr. Fry, of Dulcis, and Mr. Haydon, the owner of Hill's. We are chiefly concerned with Churchwardens, and it is curious to note how often a lady fills the office. In 1599, both Wardens were ladies, and the post is sometimes held by a deputy, see pp. 43, 45, and, perhaps, 66. The accounts are at times inaccurate, and are not always balanced, though some are said to be cleared " coram Parochianis," pp. 80, 82, etc. The main source of income is the Church Ale. We read in Pulman's " Book of the Axe," p. 711, that in the reign of Henry the Third, the then Lord of the IV PREFACE. Manor gave a house with, half an acre of ground to the Parish to sell ale upon for the maintenance of the Chapel, and perhaps, this is the house still belonging to the Parish, the proceeds of which were, till lately, applied to Church purposes. There is at pp. 71, 72, an interesting account of a special Ale held to raise funds to buy a Bible, and at p. 46, we have a curious inventory of Parish property used, apparently, in connection with the Church Ale, besides mention of the purchase of pots, cups, trenchers, etc., at p. 14 and elsewhere. During these feasts, the Wardens or their deputies sold the ale and bread which they had brewed or baked, and there are frequent references to the vats, ovens, bakehouse, etc., see pp. 9, 12, 22, also p. 79, where it is agreed that the tenants quit the Parish House for six weeks while the ale is brewed. Church Ales, however, were liable to abuse, and we find the use of them suspended from 1580 to 1588. The Register begins with the levy of Rates, and of King's Silver, and there are later instances of the raising of Church funds by means of Rates. In the last page only is mention made of anything like Pew-rents. There are a few gifts and legacies, with occasional fees for knells, and for burial in the Church. Offertories are not noted, but at pp. 5 and 9 we read of money "left of the plate," and at p. 32 of a Poor-box. The Parish owned a Church House, a Parish House, and a Priest's House, all of which yielded rent, see PP- 7) 9) 12, 49, 83, and many others. There are also petty receipts from the sale of timber and fruit, pp. 9, 11, 27, 32, 53, etc. There was much trouble with the Ecclesiastical Courts, and Visitations by the Archdeacon, Bishop, and even by the Archbishop, were frequent and costly. Large sums were raised for Gaol and Hospital money, as well as for maimed Soldiers. There are scanty notices of Parish Armour, of Musters, and of Butts, see pp. 18, 41, 47, 57, 65, 78, etc. The Accounts are very complete and, as a rule, legible. I can only hope that others may find them as interesting as they are to me. ROBERT CORNISH. AXMINSTER, - January, 1901, ^Umin^ion ®* ^* ^ccanni^i 1iSS~i60S. The Cover is of Parchment. On the outside is the briginal Title, viz: — "The booke of thaccounts of the Wardens of Killmyngton." There are also some notes in a modern hand. The inside of the Cover was originally used for the writing of Latin Prayers ; faint traces of which are still apparent. y cons 1 cum non Reput Sum sdtael adhac animam meam sperare yn dmo provinci in qua meam sperare in dmo Sussi am in sed quis cot patei: meus Semine confide Item for a sholder of on Domini Item for a 11 stone Comitate Devon There are also other entries in a darker ink, as : — " The condition of th obligation made the November in the X yeare of the Raigne of our Sover ngue Lady Elizabeth by the grace of God V Queue of Englond ffraunce."
