In computing values of imports and exports, different systems are used by various countries. With three important exceptions, however, the values quoted are intended to represent frontier values, that is c.i.f. for imports and j.o.h. for exports. The exceptions are the Union of South Africa, Canada and the United States, in which countries values of imports ai'e based on fair market values prevailing in the exporting countries and therefore practically represent f.o.h. prices. The annual average rates of exchange used by the Bureau in converting original currency to £ (Currency), and £ (Currency) to £ (Gold), are shown in the table below, which has been compiled from information supplied by the Board of Trade and the Federation of British Industries. It is pointed out, however, that the precious metals recovered do not bear a definite ratio to the matte treated, as the residues are allowed to accumulate over irregular periods and recoveries cannot be credited to the matte treated in any particular year. 45763 A 4 IV.
