 cents. The heliotype plate exhibits fifteen of the series of Bavarian 
 Medallic Dollars. The same, printed on heavy, tinted paper, neatly

 King Ludwig of Bavaria, distinguished for his lo^^e of art and admira- 
 tion of Lola Montez, by the coinage of these beautiful historic dollars set 
 a most worthy example, and one which the United States might well 
 follow, especially as we hare never found any devices for our coinage 
 more remarkable or appropriate than the figure of an eagle, liable to be 
 mistaken for a chicken or a turkey buzzard ; a woman, insufficiently clad, 
 squatting on a number of grocer's parcels, partly hidden by a bundle of 
 wheat, presenting in her right hand a sprig of wintergreen ; and a female 
 head stamped Liberty. Even Liberty, in her face as presented on our 
 coins, has been going backwards for most a hundred years. In 17",)5 she 
 presented an appearance of grandeur, or at least respectability ; as old 
 age has crept upon her, she has gradually changed to the silly, unmean- 
 ing figure which now adorns our standard dollar. 
 
 Had the remarkable events of American history, beginning with the 
 discovery by Columbus, been portrayed on our series of dollars, the col- 
 lector of coins might now rejoice in a line of medals unequaled in interest 
 by any issues save those of the ancient Greeks and Romans. 
 
 While the silver question is puzzling statesmen and financiers, the issue 
 of an artistic medallic currency is not unworthy of consideration, from 
 the fact that such pieces would be hoarded in immense numbers, and be 
 thus practically and permanently withdrawn from circulation. 
 
 The dollars here catalogued are of three classes : one class relates to 
 affairs of State, one to events concerning directly the Royal House, the 
 thii-d to Science and Art. The pieces are without exception in beautiful 
 brilliant condition, nearly all are proofs ; the entire set comprises thirty- 
 nine pieces, and one perfect set only has ever been oft'ered in this country. 
 The obverse of each piece is a finely executed head of King Ludwig, with 
 his name and title ; the reverses only are briefly described.

 It is very desirable for the purpose of comparison that every American 
 Collection of prehistoric implements should contain a few of these beauti- 
 ful, objects fi-om the North of Europe. The following are nearly all from 
 Denmark, the exceptions in locality only are noted ; the Danish govern- 
 ment having prohibited the exportation of these objects, specimens can 
 but rarely be procured here. I know of none for sale, with the excep-

 pierced for attachment to a cross. A portion of an 
 ancient crucifix said to possess great artistic merit ; 
 perfect but for the defect mentioned, and the arms 
 are not fractured, but being carved on separate 
 pieces of ivory, have been removed. Height 5 in. 
 
 EAST INDIAN PAINTINGS ON MICA. 
 
 The following described paintings are by native Hindoo artists, and 
 represent various phases of life in India : tradesmen and laborers at their 
 vocations, scenes of travel, etc. Want of familiarity with Hindoo life 
 and customs doubtless render the attributions somewhat doubtful. The 
 paintings are mostly in. fine condition, the mica on which a few of the 
 larger ones are painted is occasionally a little defective at the edges ; 
 these imperfections do not interfere with the paintings except in one in- 
 stance, and even in that the damage is trifling. The size when not men- 
 tioned is 5i X 4J in. ; another series, 7 x oj in. ; the latter are distinguished 
 as large. I am informed that these paintings are extremely rare ; I have 
 met with no others except a few of the same lot. The colors are very 
 bright, the designs decidedly Oriental, and the treatment is highly 
 artistic.

THE LEVICK COLLECTION. 
 
 Mr. Joseph N. T. Leviek, of New York CLty, was an;iongst the 
 earlier American coin collectors, and his name has for more than 
 twenty years been familiar to all numismatists in this countiy. 
 
 Commencing with the Early American, the Mint, and Washing- 
 ton Series, Mr. Leviek three times gathered a fine collection. 
 The first he sold through Mr. Edward Cogan ; the second, and by 
 far the finest, I purchased and sold in my sale No. 10, semi-annual 
 No. 5, New York, Oct., 1864. The third was sold by Mr. Gogan, 
 May 28, 1865. Since th at ti me, while not neglecting the more 
 fashionable, and, no ^()^H|H[>i'6 important branches ot numis- 
 matics, Mr.Xevick has ^^i^lrafeicular attention to perfecting his 
 sets of American Store Cards, Copper Heads, .Hard Times Tokens, 
 and some other coins and interesting specialties, till, in severalof 
 these departments, his collection is to-day unrivalled, numbering, 
 as it is supposed, more than twenty thousand specimens, and con- 
 taining in weight of metal more than five hundred pounds. 
 
 This entire collection I have recently purchased, and shall, as 
 soon ,as the catalogue can be prepared, . oit^r it for sale in New 
 York at the usual'place by auction. 
 
 Fifty copies of the catalogue will contain three heliotype plates.f 
 illustrating one hundred or more of the most remarkable pieces, ■; 
 and it may be fairly said the cabinet abounds with such. The
