As quality rather than quantity was the aim of those who have had the selection in charge, the number of works admitted has been limited, including 131 paintings in oil, 59 drawings and water-colors, and 28 small sculptures. Most of these were selected in Germany especially for this exhibition; and thanks to the co- operation of the authorities in charge of public galleries, as well as of private collectors and of the artists themselves, it has been possible to bring together a collection of exceptionally high grade, which may be accepted as representing the German art of to-day at its best, no preference having been given to any one school or tendency. In addition to the work of living artists, fine examples of four of the most eminent painters who have recently died have been included — [7] THE COLLECTION Arnold Bocklin, Wilhelm Leibl, Franz von Lenbach, and Adolf von Menzel. These are all exhibited in one gallery, the last on the left on entering, — ^with the exception of the drawings by Menzel, lent by the National Gallery of Berlin, which are in a room with other drawings and water-colors. The exhibition will continue during the months of January and February. [8] CATALOGUE A CATALOGUE of the exhibition has been prepared under the direction of the German Com- mission, with an Introduction by Pro- fessor Paul Clemen, of Bonn, and biogra- phical notices of the artists represented by Professor Justi, Secretary of the Royal Academy of Berlin. It has been printed in octavo form at the Imperial Press in Berlin, in two editions, one con- taining about sixty illustrations, made by the best German processes of repro- duction, under the supervision of the artists, and the other containing the same text but no illustrations. The catalogue may be purchased at the cata- logue stands. t9] BIBLIOGRAPHY A LIST of books and periodicals containing accounts of the lives and works of the contemporary German Artists has been prepared, and will be found in the Library of the Museum.
