As one lot. * This Journal and the charts that go with it were the prop- erty of Mr. Hall J. Kelley, and are cited by him as containing the contemporary proof of the purchase of lands on Nootka Sound from the Indians by Captain John Kendrick in 1787, which lands were in part conveyed to Mr. Kelley in 1832. The extracts begin with the entrance to Nootka Sound on July 30, 1792, and include an interchange of letters between the Spanish commandant at Friendly Cove, Don Juan Fran- cisco Bodega y Quadra, and Captains Eobert Gray and Joseph Ingraham, in which Capt. Ingraham gives a detailed account of the transactions between the Spaniards and English at this place in 1789, of which transactions he was an eye witness. The statement that bears on Mr. Kelley 's claim occurs on page 8, where Capt. Ingraham declares that Maquina and other, Indian chiefs informed him "that Capt. Kendrick was the only man to whom they had ever sold any land" on Nootka Sound. The chart marked No. 2, which has a piece torn out of the middle, shows the Entrance of Nootka, Entrance of Ahataset, Kendrick 's Harbour, Friendly Cove, Fort Washington, Ma- quinah tribe, etc., and was ' ' Copied from » chart made by Hoskins by H. KELLEY (HALL J.). A Geographical Sketch of that Part of North America, called Oregon; containing an account of the Indian title, etc, Second edition. Folded map. 8vo, new half levant morocco, gilt top, original paper covers bound in. Boston [1831] * The author 's own copy, with numerous marginal annota- tions in his hand throughout the book, and his name written on the front paper cover, Hall J. Kelley, of Three Rivers, Mass, This may be called a second issue of the second edition, because it has the table of contents printed on the back of the title, which is blank in the first issue of the second edition. Three leaves (pp. 61-62, 63-64, 73-74) are lacking, and are replaced by photostat reproductions. Inserted is a biograph- ical sketch of Mr. Kelley, signed Justitia, cut from the Na- tional Intelligencer of Washington, May, 1848; and prefixed is the following MS. statement, dated (in pencil) Feb., 1866: — ' ' This Map, and other Maps & Plans, and this Book, and all other Books and Tracts, are the works of my own pen, without the assistance of any Mortal, and without consulta- tion with flesh and blood. It was revealed to me in my youth from above, in two certain Visions, and unmistakeable signs were given, what manner of life I was to live — In loneliness — To do my work alone, to conceive, to plan, and acheive, and to do things which would seem to require supernatural power; this manner of life I have lived exactly from coming to ma- turity to present old age (seventy-six years the present month). This memoir, and also the narrative of events and difficulties, however, were supervised by John A. Bolles, Esq. ' ' 2190. KELLEY (HALL J.). Charlestown, 1831 * This was the author 's own copy, and has his signature on the title, Hall J. Kelley, of Three Bivers, Mass. The printed cover reads, "Manual or the Oregon Expedition. Price 1214 Cents," and on its verso is a list of thirty -seven Agents of whom Certificates may be obtained. On the front fly-leaf is written: — "Several hundred copies of this programme of my Oregon enterprise, was sent to distinguished public men in all parts of the Union, as is perceived by the catalogue of Agents on the following page for the purpose of diffusing Knowledge concerning the Oregon Territory." 2191. [Boston, 1838] * The author 's copy, from which the lower half of pp. 7-8 has been cut away, and the whole of two other leaves (pp. 9-10, 13-14) torn out, all of which have been supplied in photostat facsimile from the copy in the Boston Athenaeum. The latest date in the pamphlet is Nov. 1, 1838. Very rare. 39 2192. KELLEY (HALL J.). Original Quit Claim Deed by Hall J. Kelley, to the Heirs of John Kendrick, of one half of his interest in the ownership of lands in Oregon, which had been deeded to him by the said heirs in 1832. Dated March 7, 1838. Manuscript of 2 leaves, folio. * With the autograph signatures and wax seals of Charles Bulfinch, S. B. Barrelle, Wm. Vernon, Hall J. Kelley, Henry Hatch for himself and as Attorney for Ellen M. Gibbs, Isaac Waters, Benj. Blagge, Joseph Kendrick, Alfred Kendrick, and Huldah Gilmore, daughter and heir of John Kendrick. Also the autographs of various witnesses to the said signatures; and a deposition by Jonathan Gilmore that "the above named Joseph Kendrick, Alfred Kdndrick and Huldah Gilmore are the only surviving children and heirs of the within named John Kendrick dec'd, who made discovery and took possession of land near the mouth of the Columbia river and made the pur- chases within described," certified and subscribed before William Allen, Jr., Justice of Peace, State of Maine, County of Somerset. Attested by Benj. T. Congdon, Begister, New- Bedford, Mass., June 30, 1838, as received and recorded in the Second Book of Land Records for the Southern District on pages 155 and 156. The deed begins: — "Whereas an expedition was sent to the Pacific Ocean in the year A. D. 1787 consisting of the Ship Columbia and Sloop Washington, of which Captain John Kendrick had the command, and sundry purchases were after- wards made by said Kendrick of various tracts of land of the Indians on the North west coast, and the Columbia Biver was discovered by said expedition, and it is intended by the sur- viving owner of said expedition, and the heirs of deceased owners, and the heirs of said Kendrick, to petition the United States of America for grants of land or other remuneration, and whereas in consideration of the past and future services of Hall J. Kelley relating to the premises, a deed has been made to him by the said owner and some of said heirs of de- ceased owners of one fourth part of their interest, as by said deed will more particularly appear, ' ' etc. 2193. KELLEY (HALL J.). Memoir, Historical and Political on the Northwest Coast of North America, and the adjacent territories. By Robert Greenhow. Folded map. 8vo, original cloth. N. Y. 1840 * Formerly Hall J. Kelley 's copy, and has numerous mar- ginal notes m his hand, and slips of paper inserted on which longer notes are written. On the map, under the facsimile of the 1787 medal, he has written, "Furnished by H. J. Kelley " On a sheet of paper facing p. 20 is the following note:— Astoria— It was no settlement. When at the mouth of the Columbia river I saw but two small buildings. They had been erected for the only purpose of accomodating such of the servants of the H. B. Oo. as were stationed there to collect of the Indians furs and pelts. The author of the book was no lover of truth. He was a deceiver— deceived and duped Congress m the worst way. He should have said that H J Kelley alone without a single coadjutor, opposed by some of the most powerful men on earth, at a great expense of time ft? Young's statement to Lifut. 40 Slacum who was sent "by the Government in 1835. * * * The statement is in Young's own handwriting and reads — Mr. H. J. Kelley persuaded them to settle in that territory and conducted them thither. * * * The chief object of this book was to belie the history of the Am. claim to the Oregon country, to deceive and delude as to the validity of the land purchases by Kendrick and to bury in oblivion the name of him who had caused the ruin of the monopolies of the H. B. Co. and brought into clear light the true history of the land claim. ' ' In other MS. notes Mr. Kelley complains that he is not given credit for information supplied by him, that Green- how has everywhere suppressed his name, and that he has been ' ' made the victim of this Book. ' ' 2194. KELLEY (HALL J.). Memorial of Charles Bul- finch, et al., praying that their title to certain lands in the Territory of Oregon may be confirmed. January 13, 1840. 8vo, pp. 11, new cloth. [Wash. 1840] * This «opy belonged to Ball J. Kelley, and he has written on the first page: — Lands of which H. J. Kelley, with others have a good title. Prefixed is the following MS. note : — ' ' When this Document was brought into the House for distribution, a copy was given to the British Minister, he perused it for a moment, and walked hastily to the chair of Amos Lawrence and expressed his surprise of there being such a claim by American Citizens to lands in Oregon, and so much evidence supporting it. Mr. Lawrence himself related to me this cir- cumstance. The Hudson Bay Company's friends in the House, as I was told, seemed to be much alarmed at the publicity being given to the claim. In the course of that session nearly every copy of the document was taken from the Document Booms, save one in each, with a hope of suppressing any fur- ther knowledge thereof. It was the bloody purpose of the Company, its Agents, and Hirelings, to crush the author of these Documents in order to crush the claim. Concerning the fund of $800,000, and the distribution of the same, see Nar- rative of Events & Difficulties, p. 15. ' ' 2195. KELLEY (HALL J.). Memorial of Hall J. Kelley, praying for a donation of land, and testimonials, concerning the colonization of the Oregon Territory. 8vo, pp. 18, new cloth. [Boston, 1848] * Hall J. Kelley 's copy, with two leaves of MS. insertions. The latest dated item in the Memorial is Dec. 23, 1847. The Memorial fills pp. 1-4; testimonials pp. 5-12; Facts noted in the Journal of Hall J. Kelley, From Monterey to the Colum- bia, and of his residence in Oregon, etc., pp. 13-18. The MS. insertions relate, (1) to statements about Mr. Kelley made by Daniel Lee, "hireling of the Hudson Bay Company," in his book entitled Ten Years in Oregon; and (2) to ill treatment received on the voyage from Oregon to the Sandwich Islands. The date of publication is given as 1848 on pp. 79 and 89 of Kelley 's History of the Settlement of Oregon (1868). 2196. KELLEY (HALL J.). A Narrative of Events and Difficulties in the Colonization of Oregon, and the Settlement of California; and, also, a history of the claim of American citizens to lands on Quadra's Island; together with an ac- count of the troubles and tribulations endured between the 41 years 1824 and 1852. 8vo, pp. 92, new cloth, printed front cover bound in. Boston, 1852 * Formerly owned by the author, and with a few MS. notes on the margins in his handwriting. 2197. KELLBY (HALL J.). A. L. S. to Asa Caldwell, Gen. Agent, N. T. Central College, at McGrawville, Cortland Co., N. T., in relation to land claims in Oregon. Dated from Three Eivers, Mass., July 8, 1854. Manuscript, 3 pp., folio, endorsed. * ' ' The lands in which I would interest the College are situate on our Pacific shores on both sides of the 49th parallel, N. — both sides of De Fuca's Sea; and, of course, under both the American and British jurisdictions. A portion of them embrace the front lands of Quadras Island, commonly called Vaneouvers Island. This extensive territory, thus situate, be- longs to an association of American citizens — all worthy men — some are wealthy, and reside in New York and Boston Cities. * * * The lands were fairly acquired, in 1791, from the native chiefs, the proprietors of the soil * * * and! they comprehend an area equal to 5000 square miles, and on all hands, are acknowledged to be of great value — worth in my judgment $8,000,000. * * * In 1832, the owners and heirs of the owners to whom the Indians conveyed deeded to me a fourth part of the territory in consideration of great sacrifices and valuable services. In 1838, I gratuitously re- leased one half of my interest to the heirs of Capt. John Kendrick, by whom the purchases were made; and, in 1850, in like manner, released to the managers of the claim before Congress, one third part of what then remained to me, so that I now hold a twelfth part of the claim." 2198. KELLBY (HALL J.). A. L. S. to Asa Caldwell, Gen. Agent of N. Y. Central College, proposing to convey to the College a deed for one sixteenth of his land claims in Oregon. Dated from Three Rivers, Mass., Sept. 26, 1854. Manuscript, 2 pp. 4to. * These lands "may eventually put the College in possession of more than $500,000, certainly, if Congress deal justly with the claimants. The whole claim is to 5000 square miles of the best lands on the American shores of the Pacific. The pur- chases were valid, the title is good; and there are facts which fully and clearly demonstrate these truths." 2199.
