THE MEMORIAL ART GALLERY ROCHESTER NEW YORK EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY MR HAYLEY LEVER SEPTEMBER ELEVEN TO THIRTY NINETEEN FOURTEEN HAYLEY LEVER Mr. Hayley Lever, whose paintings are here shown collectively for the first time, has for a number of years been distinguished, both in this country and abroad, as a painter of harbor scenes. Direct and simple treat- ment, fine color, and extreme vitality characterize his works, and their vigor and sincerity make an irresist- ible appeal to the modern spirit. Mr. Lever's special study has been scenes along the southwest coast of England — Cornwall and Devon — and in particular the town and harbor of St. Ives. This region has rarely if ever had so good an inter- preter. Mr. Lever has succeeded where many have failed, in giving its peculiar color and atmosphere, and that more elusive quality, its personality. Mr. Lever's work has not in any sense been confined to Cornish harbors, however. New York, both along the water- front and in the city, has furnished him with subjects which he has treated with equal success. Mr. Lever has exibited at the Pittsburgh Inter- national by invitation since 1909, and last year received an Honorable Mention. His pictures have also been shown at the National Academy of Design, New York, for a number of years, as well as in Boston and Phila- delphia. He was awarded the Silver Medal in the exhibition of this year at the National Arts Club. Mr. Lever is a member of the Royal British Artists, London, of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and an academ- ician of the Royal West of England Academy, as well as a constant exhibitor at the New and Old Salons, Paris, the Royal Academy, London, the New English Art Club, London, and the Internationals in Nice and Venice by invitation.
