BY DAVID W. HOYT. Providence, R. I. 1919. p SU HS7 Since the publication of Volume III, the reception of many letters of inquiry has led to further investigation along certain lines, and the study of some complicated genealogical problems. The recent printing of old records has brought to light informa- tion not before readily accessible. In accordance with the urgent request of various persons interested in such matters, these addi- tions are here preserved in print. DAVID W. HOYT. R., vol. 1, p. 103, should read Kelly. Hawke [Danville], N. H., Chh. Rec. [G. R. 1904, pp. 42-6, 121-2] has the following: John Selley, 8 chil., bp. 1764-79. William Selley, 1 child, bp. 1764. Mary Selley of Hawke m. Ebenezer Tucker, Jr., of Hm. Falls, Dec. 22, 1768. Moses Selley of Chester m. Elizabeth Thorn, of Kg., Dec. 5, 1771. The family is found in various other N. H. towns. The writer has found too few records of the Cilley family to enable him to classify accurately the early generations, as shown on p. 892. Colby Family. 1 Anthony' Colby. There was an ancient Colby family in Banham, Norfolk Co., Eng. The ancestor of one branch was Sir John Colby, Kt., of Swarson [Swardeston], Norfolk. A pedigree of some of his descendants is printed on p. 82 of "The Visitations of Norfolk, 1563, 1589, and 1613," Harl. Soc. Pub., 1891. One of the seventh generation, named Anthony Colby, died without issue. His nephew, Christopher^ Colby, son of Thomas' and Eliza- beth (Greene) Colby (Edward', William*, ThomasS Robert^, John^, John'), is the eldest son of a family of eleven children, with whose names the pedigree ends. No dates are given, nor any means of determining from which of the three visitations the pedigree was taken. They were combined about 1620. There is a Colby parish in Norfolk, and a Coleby one in Lincoln. "Lincolnshire Pedigrees," Harl. Soc. Pub., 1904, contains a pedigree of the Thorold family of Marston. On p. 983 is a Christopher Colby of Grantham, who m. Anne Thorold. They had chil.: Thomas, Anthony, Markham, and Helen Colby, who were legatees of their aunt, Elizabeth Thorold, who d. unm. in 1616. Anne (Thorold) Colby had a brother and a grandfather both named Sir Anthony Thorold, Kt. The bro. was high sheriff of Co. Lincoln in 1617. This Christopher Colby of Grantham (Co. Lincoln) may have been the son of Thomas of Banham, Norfolk, named without comment in the pedigree quoted above; but proof has not been found. Anthony Colby, son of Christopher and Anne, must have been b. as early as 1595 to be executor of the will of another aunt, Mary Thorold, who d. unm. in 1615. This Anthony Colby was therefore b. about the same time as An- thony Colby of Salisbury, Mass., but here, again, proof of identity is lacking. The names Thomas and Anthony are repeated early in this country, but not Christopher, Markham, Anne, or Helen. 1060 OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMBSBUKY. James W. Colby, in his "History of the Colby Family," Waltham, Mass., 1895, states that Anthony of Salisbury, b. 1690, was son of Thomas of Beccles, Suffolk, Eng. He carries the ancestry back through Suffolk families, probably descended from John', who disappears from the Norfolk pedigree, eldest son of John' of Banham, Norfolk, grandson of Sir John', and bro. of Robert'; but gives no authority. He carries the Norfolk line much further back than Sir John, to Robert de Colebi. He gives Colby families in other parts of England, and gives the ancestry of Christopher' as we have it above; but states that he was living in 1616 and lieft no issue. The "Visitations" quoted above make no such statement. Mr. Colby omits entirely the Thorold-Colby line, which includes an Anthony Colby who may have been b. in 1690. It is probable that the Suffolk family is a branch of the Norfolk line; but it is doubtful if the connection Mr. Colby gives is correct. If we understand his arrangement, he makes the ancestry of Anthony of Salisbury as follo^vs: Sir John', John2 of Banham, John', d. 1459, John* of Brundish (Suffolk), d. 1540(7), Thomas' of Beccles, will 1588, Anthony', b. 1590. It is not often that a son dies 81 years later than his father, and if a man's will was probated in 1588, he could not have a son b. in 1590. Mr. Colby gives a Christopher of this branch, an uncle of Anthony of Salisbury. Could he have been the husband of Anne Thorold? Six generations seem too few. If the Christopher of Banham and Grantham were the same, the son Anthony would be of the ninth generation. The Suffolk "Visitation" of 1664, published in 1910, gives a later pedigree, showing that Rev. Thomas' Colby, son of Thomas' and bro. of Christopher', settled in Cawston, Norfolk, and had a son, John of Waltham, Suffolk, in 1664. Dea. (16) Thomas' Colby d. Dec. 25, 1738, in his 71st y.[AVR]. 728 Thomas Colby. Mr. Wm. G. Nichols, of Griffin, Ga., states that family tradition makes Hannah a sister of (729) Judith and (731) Mary, or Molly, and adds the following to the records on pp. 692-3 : 729a Hannah, b. Apr. 2, 1752*; bp. July 12, 1752 [2A, p. 10571; m. Hezekiah Nichols, int. Jan. 3, 1775[A]. Shed. June 16, 1814,aged "62y." [AVR]. 731 Mary, or Molly, b. Mch. 15, 1756[A]; bp. Mch. 28, 1756[2AI; m. Nov. 14, 1798[A1, Maj. Isaac Whittier, his 2d wife. She d. Jan. 5, 1807, aged "52 y."[A VR). As the date of birth is prob. correct, either the date or age at death must be incorrect by one year — a discrepancy not unusual on tombstones. The records of the Second Church for renewing covenant give no dates for the first twenty years, and no months for the first forty years, except "Dec. 1750," p. 506, which prob. applies only to Joseph Harvey. Thos. Colby and wife doubtless ren. cov. Feb. 10, 1750-1, the day of his baptism, p. 528. The records show that this was the custom in other cases. *The town rec. reads "1751"; but 1752 corresponds with her bp. and age on her tombstone, and with the birth of Judith. ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS. 1061 (51) Thoiias Colby and (728) Thomas Colby, pp. 656, 692-3, were probably the same person, as suggested on p. 693. That one was called "yeoman" and the other "blacksmith" several years later, does not disprove identity. We have found no record of the removal, death, or probate of (51) Thomas. He was still Thomas "3d," on the town rec, when his son (153) Jonathan' was b., i n the West Parish, in 1730. About 20 years later, a Thomas Colby m. Hannah Sargent, in S. Hm., and a Thomas and Hannah had several chil. b. in the same West Parish, as given above. Assuming the identity, (51) Thomas woilld be 53 y. old at the birth of his youngest child by his second wife, and 55 y. at his death. We find no clear evidence that there were two adult Thomas Colbys in the W. Parish between 1743 and 1761. If living, (51) Thomas was really Sen. after 1741, as both (16) and (32) Thomas d. about that time. (87) Thomas was then Jr., of the E. Parish, and on the N. H. side of the State line of 1742 in his later life. There was therefore little occasion to use either Sr. or Jr. (87) Thomas was called Jr. of A. in 1745, perhaps rem. to Newton after 1760 (p. 665). All the births of the chil. of (728)[51] Thomas on the town records, and all the baptisms on the chh. records are given without either Sr. or Jr. The term "Jr." appears only on a duplicate record of the births of the two youngest chil., where it may have been used to distinguish (51) Thomas from his father, of the same parish, several years after the death of the latter. In settling the estate of his father and mother, 1739-42 and later, he was Thomas Jr.; also in deeds recorded at Salem, 1748 and 1755. If the two Thomases were the same person, he prob. was not bp. in child- hood, though his father, (16) Thomas', was one of the members of the 1st chh. who formed the 2d chh., of which he was elected one of the first two deacons, in 1726, when his son Thomas was 20 y. old. Moreover, as suggested on p. 693, the bp. of his son Jonathan in 1732 must have been on account of the mother or the grandfather, Dea. Thomas, though not so stated. Davis Family. 4 James' Davis. A James Davis m. June 11, 1618, Sysley Tayer (early form of the New Eng. name Thayer) at Gloucester [from Thornbury Parish Register, Gloucestershire, Eng.] It has been thought by some this may have been the marriage of the Hv. set- tler, claimed by Bible records to have come from Marlborough, Wilt- shire, b. 1584-9; but other names and dates do not coincide. This may prove an ancestor of one of the other Davis families of Salis- bury and Amesbury, or possibly Gloucester, Mass.* [95a Saeah» Davis (92 Francis^) m. Jan. 20, 1703-4[A1, (16) Philip* Rowell?] The above is given as highly prob., for the following reasons: We have found no record of a Sarah Davis who could have m. Philip Rowell. The A. vital records are missing from 1677 to 1685[p. 28], and the ehh. rec. are also lost. This gap in the records of Amesbury families can sometimes be filled, in part at least, by means of probate rec. and deeds, as appears in the third or fourth generations of the Colby, Currier, Huntington, Martin, Rowell, Weed, Wells, and other families. Two additional daus. were recently found for the family of (3) John^ Hoyt Ipp. 981-2], and prob. two for that of (4) SamueP Foot [p. 961|. Two sons, (95) Thomas and (96a) Samuel, have been added to the family of (92) Feancis Davis, pp. 130, 726-8. As (96) Francis was the "3d son," either (95) Thomas or (96a) Samuel, and perhaps two or three daus., were b. within that period. If there were a second wife Mary, as suggested on p. 726, there may have been only one dau. not rec. (93) John Davis, (94) Gertrude Sargent and Philip Rowell [96a Sarah] each had a dau. Alice, all apparently named for their grandmother Alice, wife of Walter Taylor. The birth of no other Alice Rowell or Davis appears on the A. V. R., and only two other Alice Sargents, of a later generation. (95) Thomas Davis had a granddau. named Alice, b. in Newton, in 1748. (97) John Davis [possibly a bro. of (92) Francis] had a son Ichdbod Bowden. Philip Rowell had a son, and (96) Francis Davis a grandson, each named Ichabod, the only ones of that name among the early Ames. Rowells and Davises. (96) Francis Davis had a son Philip, the only one of that name in the Ame?. Davis families, though a tradition doubtfully ment. an earlier Philip. These Davises and Rowells seem to have lived near each other in the West Parish, owning adjoining lands in some cases. ♦The same register has Sicely Tayer bp. May 1, 1600. Also Frances Davys bp. Perhaps "Bradford," p. 732, 3d line, should be Corinth, Vt. If the two are the same, the children were as follows: 471 DAVID^ b. 1748, p. 732. Chil.: Stephen, Anna, Mary, and Kezia, b. 1764-'77. The dates for the chil. must be in "new style." The same uncertainty as to the day of the month occurs when the name of the month is given for dates earlier than 1752, written later, but the Friends used numbers for the months. After 1752, Jan- uary was the first month; before that the legal or civil year began March 25, and March was called the first month, though some church records make the year begin Jan. 1, and others used the double dating from Jan. 1 to Mch. 25. A "Widdow PVench" (either Susan or Alice) was on the list of Ip. commoners in 1641. 90 Serjent Thomas French [Jr.] rec'd a grant of land in Ip. in Feb., 1686-7, and was a Commoner there in 1641. For family see fNote, p. 166. He may have been a son of either (88) Thomas or (89) Susan; but we find no proof of relationship. There were at least two persons named John French in Ip. before 1680: one who was of age in 1648, perhaps the same as the son of Susan, 1658; the other the son of Sergt. [Ens.] Thomas ment. in his will, 1680, who was prob. of age before 1660. There also were at least three named Thomas French. A John was made freeman in 1660 and a Thomas in 1674. We find no reason to suppose that Edward French was nearly related to any one of the others given above, though he lived in Ip. a short time, with the older ones. Hoyt Family. I JoHNi Hoyt and wife were called her "brother" and "sister," and (12) Naomi* Hoyt her "cousin," by Susanna Martin, wife of George, in 1674; because her son, (3) Richard^ Martin, was then husband of (8) Mary* Hoyt-Bartlett, dau. of John^ Hoyt and wife. These expressions of relationship are in Susanna Martin's testimony in court, wherein she rehearsed a spirited ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS. 1071 conversation between herself and Hoyt's wife and dau. Naomi about the Tuxbury controversy. Thomas Tuxbury, of Boston and Newbury, left a wife' and children in England. A letter had been received stating that his wife had died. Rev. Thomas Wells testified that it was directed "by superscription to Henry Tuxe- berry in. New England, dwelling near Newberey; and by inscription to Thomas Tuxebp-rry." This seems to indicate a relationship between Thomas of New- bury ar'd Henry of Amesbury. Thomas Tuxbury lived for a time in John Hoyt's house in Amesbury. He seated that he had a "great lamness," and went to Hoyt's wife "to have my hand cured." As Naomi Hoyt called him "unckell tukesbery," we might infer that he went to his sister to have his hand cured; but he did not call her sister, and there would not be likely to be so much gossip about widow Bart- Tett's ir.:9ntion to marry Thomas Tuxbury, if he were known to be her mother's brother. The term uncle might imply that Tuxbury's wife was sister to either John Hoyt or his wife; but the term might indicate merely friendly relations. A man has sometimes been "uncle" to a whole neighborhood. [Es. Co. Ct., vol. 5, pp. 400-4.1 42 William* Hoyt. Most of the following Rowell records, except those from the printed vital records of Mass., have been furnished by George P. Bowell, Esq., of Stamford, Ct.
