The students by this method are given a broader outlook and a more varied practical experience at such a co-operative center under apprenticeship to specialists engaged in the work which the students need to learn. Opportunities in Chicago for Training Chicago offers rich opportunities for training in Civic and Social service. 1. There are in the first place a number of social agencies whose standards of work are unquestionably high, through whose co-operation the School is able to offer field work of a disciplinary character. 3. The public institutions, — municipal, county and state, — many of them admirably conducted, are hospitable in admitting students of the School for the purposes of inspection. The superintendents of these institutions frequently serve as guides and assist by explana- tion and suggestion in a better understanding of institutional manage- ment. 3. There are many able and devoted students of the social prob- lem who contribute as members of the staff,' as special lecturers, by advising with the officers of the school or in other ways to the in- struction and guidance of the students. 4. The presence in Chicago of a large foreign population repre- senting many nationalities who tend to live in segregated communities makes it possible for the intelligent student to become familiar with the character of these groups, and thus equipped to serve them either in Chicago or in other communities in which representatives of the same nationalities are found. Headquarters Service by the School 1. A meeting place for social and civic workers in the city or from out of town to which they may have their mail addressed, at a location central to the private association and institutions of Chicago. 3. Assembly Rooms free (except for cost of lighting) upon application for board meetings and conferences of social and civic organizations. 3. Directories and reports on file for reference, giving the latest information about the principal organizations in the social and civic field. 4. A clearing house of information on exhibits, films and lantern slides for graphic publicity purposes. 5. Lists of lecturers available for extension work. 6. Registry place where social workers changing employment and Institutions having positions open, can leave record of the fact. *Frora the Year Book ot the Sphppl. 48 pages. Sent on application PREFACE This list, prepared February, 1913, in anticipation of the Housing Exhibition of March at the Chicago City Club, is the contribution of the School through its Reference and Extension Department to the Housing Movement now to the fore in Chicago. The 710 books in this list on housing and related subjects are to be found in the central or "down-town" libraries of Chicago, name- ly: The Chicago Public Library (P), The John Crerar Library (J), the Municipal Library (M), the Ryerson Library of the Art Insti- tute (A), the City Club Library (C), and the Library of the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy (S). The bibliographies and periodicals in the first two divisions of the list make available a great deal of additional material. Not a few of the books in the list contain short lists of references, and are illustrated by plans, maps, elevations. These libraries are of course constantly adding to their collections both current books and earlier publications. The basis of the list are the printed cards contributed by the John Crerar Library and edited by its Cataloger, Mr. A. G. S. Joseph- son. The co-operators representing other libraries have been Miss Edith Kammerling, head of the Civics Department, Chicago Public Library; Mr. Frederick Rex, Assistant Statistician Municipal Library; Mr. D. L. Akers, Assistant Civic Secretary Chicago City Club; Miss Mary A. Van Home, Librarian Art Institute; Miss Ruth G. Nichols and Miss Renee B. Stern, of the Chicago School of Civics and Phil- anthropy Library, all of whom have given freely of their time to make the list as comprehensive as possible within the limits of time and space. The classification and editing is the work of the expert bibli- ographer, Mr. A. G. S. Josephson, John Crerar Library, assisted by Miss Stern of the School's Library, who has also done the proof- reading. The publication is made possible through the School's Extension Fund generously provided by Mrs. Wm. Templeton Johnson. It will be sold at the nominal price of twenty cents. A copy will be furnished free to the principal public libraries and to special libraries interested in social and civic work. It can be purchased through the Survey Magazine, Chicagb office 116 South Michigan Ave. Edward L. Burchard, Director Extension and Reference Department. Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy.
