FARMER Casitle of S^ersetierance 'The Macro Tlays. No. 3 Issued for Subscribers by T. C. & E. C. JACK, 16 HENRIETTA STREET LONDON, W.C. : AND EDINBURGH MCMVIII %\)t Ca0tle of 3^er0eberance T/)e Macro Tlays. No. 3 The circumstances under which this unique manuscript play is included in The Tudor Facsimile Texts will be found narrated in '■'■Mankind" and "■Wisdom'''' [Macro Plays, Nos. i and 2, Introductions), together with other details connected with the history of the manuscript. " The Castle of Perseverance " is the oldest of the trio, Mr. A. W. Pollard inclining to the view that, on literary grounds, it belongs to the period of the first and second quarters of the fifteerith century, '■'■not much later than 1425" [E.E.T.S. Extra Series, No. xci.,p. xxiv). As in the case of '■'■ Man- kind" and " Wisdom^' the student must perforce turn to The Early English Text Society's reprint for valuable, interesting, indeed indispensable textual information and criticism in respect to " The Castle of Perseverance." One or two facts concern- ing the manuscript itself and the present facsimile must, however, be noted. (i) The original manuscript of " The Castle of Perse- verance" as now bound {with '•'■Mankind'" and '■'■Wisdom"'), and also, probably, as bound in the eighteenth century (with the foregoing and other items'), has two leaves wanting — one between the present {corrected) folio ijo and its {corrected) continuation folio 173; also a corresponding leaf between the present folios 182 and 1 8 5 {also as now restored to their proper order). The manuscript has also, as already indicated, four leaves misplaced. The Gurney copy consists of thirty- eight leaves quarto (i 54-1 91) written throughout in one hand, with interlineations. 'The probable date of writing, says Mr. Herbert, is about 1440. The misplacements have been worked out by Mr. A. W. Pollard^ who affirms [E.E.T.S. Extra Series XCI. , xxxii) the true order of the leaves to be 170, 173, 172, 171, 174, 175. 177, 176, 179, 178, 180, 181, 184, 183, 182, 185. This revision is fully confirmed by rimes and sense being now put right everywhere except as regards the two missing leaves aforesaid. (2) A peculiarity of this manuscript, of which a note is likewise necessary, is that occasionally the names of the speakers and the stage directions have been written in red instead of black ink. Such deviations from the general rule occur as follows : — Folio 160, verso, stage direction following line 4 and the names of the speakers at line 14 [Mundus) line 27 [humanum genus), line 40 [Mundus). Folio 161, recto, names of players at line 9 {Voluptas), line 17 {Stulti\cia\j , line 25 [Detraccio), together with the stage direction following line 24. {Also see Mr. Herbert's remarks, infra.) (3) Insertions in contemporary and later hands will be found as follows : — Folio 159, recto, the stage direction '■''pipe vp, mu[sic] " at line 27. Folio I JO, verso, at foot, the misplacement of the leaves being unnoticed, a later hand tried to correct the obvious anachronism by inserting " Mains angelus." This was smudged out and " Detraccio ad Caro " was then added by the same or another late hand. Folio 178, recto, line i. '■'■ Covetyse" has been added in a later hand. Folio 182, recto, line i. The old pencil writing at top, " This ought to be p. 184," may be noted : in original this is much clearer than in facsimile. Folio 185, recto, line 30. A later hand, the leaf being misplaced, has inserted at the side, " HeSj-e^ aperith y' sowle." (4) Mr. J. A. Herbert [Manuscript Department., British Museum) reports as follows, after comparing this facsimile with the original manuscript : — Folio 156, recto, line 13. The smudge is not so dark in MS. : the " d" o/"" dyth " is clear. Folio 162, verso. The smudgy appearance of the initial letters of the names of characters on this page is due to their being touched with red in the MS. Folio 164, verso, line 9. The " nipped'' word is " tell." Folio ij6, verso, line 35. The '"'■nipped" word is " cocupisce^ " that is, " concupiscentias." Folio 180, verso. The '■'' nipped" player-name is " Solicitudo." Folio 183, verso. The '■'■nipped" words near bottom inner margin are '■'■won" and '■'■getf" [—genus) respectively. Folio 187, recto, last line. The stain is exaggerated : in MS. " blyne " shows quite clearly. JOHN S.
