THE PARALLEL LINES represent the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th frets below the head or nut. THE BLACK DOTS ^^ show the correct positions of placing the fingers of the left hand in pressing down the strings to rest on the frets. THE OPEN DOTS^~)representopenstrings to be played without placing the fingers on them. THE FIGURES ABOVE THE NUT denote the fingers to be used in pressing down the strings. THE PICKING is done with the fingers of the right hand — the bass strings are picked with the thumb," the 3rd string with the 1st or index fin- ger, the 2nd string with the 2nd finger, the 1st string with the 3rd finger. The tips or balls of the fingers should be used, not the finger nails. The picking of the strings or striking the notes should be done below . the sound hole of the guitar. TO TUNE THE GUITAR Tune the 5th or A Bass string to sound in unison with the tone of an A tuning fork or middle A on the piano or organ, then press the 5th string down on the 5th fret and tune the 4th or D string in unison with that tone, then press the 4th string at the 5th fret and tune the 3rd string in unison, then press the 3rd or G string at the 4th fret and tune the 2nd string in unison, then press the 2nd or B string at the 5th fret and tune the 1st or E .string in unison, then tune the 6th string in unison with the 1st string, two octaves lower, so that when the 6th string is held down at the 5th fret the tone will be in uniison with the 5th string open. A Set of Guitar Tuning Pipes, contistinsr of six pipes, one for each string, give the exact pitch to which each should be tuned. These pipes are a great help to all players. When the figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 appear below two or more strings, the strings so marked should be picked together for the count, M^ as shown in this diagram which shows the chord of C to be picked as fol- '^ lows : Strike the 5th, or A string once, then the 3rd string once, then the~ 2nd and 1st strings together once, then the 3rd string once, making the four counts.
