AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME N 691 i.A5l'""' """""'""■"'"'>' *i»|]°rj guide in architecture, painting, 3 1924 020 516 TOs" A SHORT GUIDE IN ARCHITECTURE, PAINT- ING, SCULPTURE. AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITEC- TURE FOR ITALY, EXCLUDING THE FOLLOWING CITIES; ROME, FLORENCE, VENICE, SIENA, PE- RUGIA, MILAN. NAPLES AND POMPEII, BOLOGNA, GENOA AND PALERMO. ROME printed for the AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME 1916. ROMA TIPOGBAFIA EdITRIOE " LA SPBBANZA " Via Firenze, 38 Telefono 27-68. A short Guide (*) in Architecture, Painting, Sculpture and Landscape Architecture for Italy, ex- cluding the following cities (all of which the members of the School of Fine Arts should visit sometime or other during their term of scholarship); Rome, Florence, Venice, Siena, Perugia, Milan, Naples and Pompeii, Bologna, Genoa and Palermo. The American Academy in Rome encourages the study of styles, for, although absolute reproduction of styles in modern work is deadening to the imagination, knowledge of styles is essential to the evolution of our needs and conditions of to-day. Italy, more than in any other country, offers a succession of examples illustrating the history of styles. The Fellows of the School of Fine Arts, living among the chef d'oeurves of the great masters for years, should be able to go on from them to further and valuable discoveries. It is proposed, first, that the Fellows of the School, while travelling, write their commentaries to the following skeleton, adding to it the result of their observations and experiences; secondly, that the skeleton be kept on file in book form for reference and for the assistance of new Fellows. Extracts from it and additions to it might perhaps be regularly published in our Annual. All the works of art mentioned hereafter have been studied by experts and in most cases published, but a commentary by practicing artists could approach them fi-om an entirely different angle and might furnish a whole corpus of material of great value. (*) The idea of the Guide originated with Mr. Edwin H. Blashfield, and both he and Mr. William M. Kendall have been of valuable assistance in its preparation. — 4 — Almost all the places and works of art mentioned below are illustrated and discussed in the following books: — Venturi's "Storia dell'Arte," Volumes IV, V, VI, VII^, VII,, VII,; Ricci's "Italia Artistica"; Trigg's "The Art of Garden Design in Italy"; Mrs. Aubrey Leblond's "Old Gardens of Italy": for Bramante's work in and around Milan, Corrado Ricci's "Art in Northern Italy"; H. Strack's "Centra,! uad Kuppel-Kirchen der Renaissance in Italien," and F. Malaguzzi-Valeri's "LaCorte di Lodovico il Moro; Bramante e Leonardo da Vinci." A- Of interest chiefly to Architects. P- Of interest chiefly to Painters. S- Of interest chiefly to Sculptors. L- Of interest chiefly to Landscape Architects. (For list of mosaics and stained glass, see pages 61 and 68).
