Prepared by ESTELLE LUTRELL Librarian Tucson, Arizona 1913 Arizona formed from territory ceded to the United States by the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of Feb. 2, 1848, and part of what is known as the "Gadsden Purchase," in 1852; erect- ed into a territorial government and the right to Delegate representation in congress granted by act of Feb. 24, 1863; admitted into the Union, Feb. 14, 1912. — U. S. Biog. Congr. Directory. Press of The Arizona Daily Star Job Department Introduction This bibliography as well as the material on Arizona in the University Library has been brought together as the out- growth of local needs. The value of its being thus organized rests in the fact that the information is widely scattered, sometimes obscured by the particular title chosen and in many instances not indexed in any of the commonly used periodical guides or classified book lists. Although only occasional items can be called rare, still a very considerable number would not be found in a library where such a collection had not been stimulated by frequent demand. On the other hand many articles are indexed in magazines likely to be found in any large library. Under the head of Geology and Mining, for example, there are listed probably most of the significant writings on the subject relating to Arizona. While the publications themselves are, for the most part, common property, the arrangement of the titles in this collective form will, it is hoped, add to their general accessi- bility and usefulness. Within the past year the Library has received from the family of the late Herbert Brown, Curator of the University Museum, 1895-1913, a gift of the bound files of the Arizona Citizen, from the beginning of the paper, October 15, 1870, through the year 1877. There have also been acquired by purchase some authoritative contributions on the Apache Wars. Such acquisitions point to a time when the University Library may contain not only the output of present-day activ- ities in Arizona, but also historical sources of value and im- portance. The bibliographies given at the close have been used, in some cases as a basis of arrangement, and in others for the identification of certain items as being of local interest. A simple classification has been adopted, supplemented by occas- ional explanatory notes and an index. In spite of endeavor to the contrary a piece of work, even as limited in scope as this, undertaken on this plan, is likely to show defects, possibly, in some cases, the "defects of its qualities." Thanks are due Miss Mabel A. Guild, Assistant Librarian, for help in proof reading and Miss Laura Swan, student assistant, for careful service in the routine of arrangement. E. L.
