F. R. S. Regius Professor of Medicine in the University of Oxford BY MINNIE WRIGHT BLOGG Librarian OF The Johns Hopkins Hospital Books are tools, doctors are craftsmen. —OSLER. Revised and Enlarged with Index BALTIMORE 1921 Copyright, 1921 BY Minnie Wright Blogg BALTIUORE, UD,, U. 6. A. TO DR. THOMAS McCBAE FRIEND AND GO-WORKER OF SIR WILLIAM OSLEB PKBFACE The Bibliography of Sir William Osier, covering a period of forty-nine years (1870-1919) and representing 730 titles, which I compiled at the request of the Superintendent of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, was published in the Osier Number of The Johns Hopkins Hospital Bidletin; * as pub- lished in the volume Sir William Osier, Bart. (1930), addi- tional titles, many of which were sent the compiler by Sir Williaan, brought the number up to 773. The increase to the present number of 1,195 titles has been made through pleasant, if labourious, research as well as by the generous help of Sir William Osier's friends. If all sug- gestions as to titles have not been accepted, it is because the authorship of many unsigned articles could not be established and not from lack of appreciation of the kindness of those who gave them. I am particularly grateful to Dr. W. W. Francis, who was the bearer of messages from Sir William, and who has given valuable addenda. My indebtedness is great to Dr. Thomas McCrae whose ad- vice has been invaluable, and to Messrs. Lea and Febiger who unearthed numerous unsigned editorials and gave me their titles. The kindness of Dr. Wilburt C. Davison in lending the photograph (a gift of Sir William to Dr. Davison) which ap- pears as a frontispiece, has placed me under lasting gratitude. I take this opportunity to thank Dr. Henry M. Hurd for help and encouragement; Dr. Harvey Gushing for addi- tional titles and for helpful criticism; Dr. Fielding H. Garrison for special use of the Library of the Surgeon- General's Office ; Dr. Archibald Malloch for titles which would have been unrecognized except for his knowledge of their ♦ Johns Hopkins Hosp. Bull., Bait, 1918, xxx, 219-233. h 6 Preface authorship ; Dr. Edward C. Streeter and Mr. Leonard L. Mac- kail, Sir Dawson Williams and Sir Samuel Squire Sprigge; Mr. John Parker and Mr. Samuel Hill, of the Peabody In- stitute; Mr. Ashley, of the Library of Congress; and Miss Charlton, Librarian of the Academy of Medicine, Toronto. Many of the books and articles included in this Bibliography are in the Library of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and are of special value as gifts from the author or from Lady Osier. I must add that Sir WiUiam Osier's words of commenda- tion, when the briefer Bibliography appeared, have been my chief reward and iuspiration. Minnie Weight Blogg.
