JONES NEW YORK G. P PUTNAM'S SONS 27 & 29 WEST 23D STREET 1882 ^. S^f^'T^ ^^cornellX university \ LIBRARY m^fs^sswf^mm COPYKIGHT BY G. P. PUTNAM'S SONS 1882 Press of G. P. Putnam's Sons New York PREFACE. The success which the various editions of " The Best Read- ing " have met with has encouraged its publishers to offer in a supplementary volume the titles of the leading books published during the five years since the last edition of that work was issued. This volume has therefore been compiled on the same general plan as its predecessor, following the same principles of inclusion and exclusion, using the same marks for rating, etc., so that familiarity with the former work will facilitate reference to this. It is, however, complete in itself, and can be used entirely independently of the first series. The period covered is from July, 1876, to January, 1882. Some few books, however, issued before that time (and not in- cluded in the first series) have been inserted when their impor- tance has seemed to make this desirable. New editions have, as a rule, been omitted ; the exceptions being a few standard works of which the new editions seemed likely to become the leading ones. The cheap (paper) reprints have also been omitted, except where there was no other edition in the market. In addition to these, text-books, technical works, local publica- tions, costly works, etc., have been excluded as in the first series. The marks a (the best of the less expensive) and b (the best regardless of cost) indicate approximately the relative standing of the books under the various topics. It has not been possible to insert these in all cases, and in some instances (as under Religion) they have, for obvious reasons, been omitted. Under PREFACE. fiction, in accordance with the plan of the former work, this marking has been carried a step further, and all the writers have been divided into three classes of "good," " better," " best," indicated by c, b and a respectively, while the relative importance of the several works of the more fruitful authors has been further indicated by the use of double or single asterisks. It is of course needless to say that this list is not complete, and it is perhaps unnecessary to say, that the classification is not scientific. " The Best Reading" is planned as a working list for buyers of books, and not as a scientific bibliography. The books have been placed where it was thought they would be looked for, with references to help the searcher when in doubt. The compiler has endeavored to include every impor- tant American book, and a selection of the more important English ones, issued within this time. That he has succeeded in doing so he does not for one moment suppose. He can only hope that his sins of omission may not be many, or weigh too heavily against him. May, i883. LYNDS E. JONES.
