Schoellkopf EX-OFFICIO The Honorable Louis P. Fuhrmann, Mayor The Honorable John F. Cochrane, Comptroller ART DIRECTOR Cornelia B. Sage PREFATOPvY THE present exhibition of Sculpture, which is being held by the National Sculpture Society under the auspices of The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Albright Art Gallery, was the thought of the late Karl Bitter of New York. It was for many years Mr. Bitter's wish to hold such an exhibition in the most suit- able place under the most favorable conditions, but his untimely death temporarily postponed the actual realization. The^ new President of the Natural Sculpture Society, the committee originally appointed by Mr. Bitter, and the Director of The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, wishing to carry out Mr. Bitter's desires, decided to develop and present a real sculpture exhibition, not the usual affair in which the sculptors play but an incidental part. This exhibition is not a retrospective one; one-man collections of many of the great deceased sculptors have been shown in museums through- out the country. The purpose of this exhibition is to give the public of America an opportunity to see a collection of contemporary American sculpture of the very highest order. The only works of deceased sculptors are those of the originator of this exhibition, Karl Bitter, and one or two others who have died since the exhibi- tion was first proposed. The collection consists of original works of sculpture in all its branches: medals, plaques, small and large sculpture in bronze, marble, plaster and other materials; wood and ivory carving, ob- jects of sculpture in precious metals, portraits, allegorical statues and works of decorative or monumental character. Nearly all works of importance shown at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition are included and in addition some made since the expo- sition by American sculptors of note have been solicited for the occasion. Buffalo should become a point of pilgrimage for all those who have an ambition to see the sculpture of our American artists as they have never seen it before, and as probably they will not see it again for many a long day. The works shown at the Albright Art Gallery will be returned to their owners after the close of the present exhibition and never again assembled in such a collection. The people of Buffalo have a rare pleasure in store for them in this exhibition of the work of American sculptors. Interest in sculpture has been aroused as never before by the important part it played in the Panama-Pacific Exposition. It would not be an exaggera- tion to say that the great fountains, sculpture courts, decorative columns and individual examples of the plastic art were among the crowning features of the Exposition. The time is especially right for such an exhibition as the current one and the Albright Art Gallery is superbly adapted to its presen- tation. The Officers and Directors of The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy wish to acknowledge their appreciation of and their great indebtedness to the National Sculpture Society and the various committees, the exhibiting sculptors and the owners of works lent for the occasion. Especial thanks are due to the Com- mittee on Installation, Mr. Adolph A. Weinman and Mr. Robert Aitken, sculptors, Mr. Bryant B. Fleming and Mr. Harold Olmsted, landscape architects, the Honorable John F. Malone, Commissioner of Parks and Public Buildings, and the City Officials, who have so generously co-operated in the use of the Park for the display of monumental and decorative examples. CORNELIA B. SAGE, Art Director. NOTES This exhibition is installed in Galleries I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, XII, XIII, XIV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, North and South Transepts of the Sculpture Court, and the Sculpture Court. There are also a number of works exhibited on the Terraces of the Gallery, and in the Park grounds adjoining; these are marked with an obelisk (f) in the catalogue. Objects in this catalogue marked with an asterisk (*) were selected from the Panama- Pacific International Exposition, San Fran- cisco, Cal. A star on photograph frame indicates that the object or model is included in this exhibition. Most of the works in this exhibition are for sale. For prices, apply to members of the staff.
