Fifty tjhousand bales of cotton were handled by the Company during the season of 1909-1910, and as the Com- pany is its own exporter, most of this was sold direct to the con- sumer both in America and Europe. The success of the venture in handling cotton has caused the Company to open new avenues of service to the membership in Mississippi. Scarcely a commod- ity needed by the Brethren of that State for use upon the farm but Clan be secured from this Company through ijs branches at a great saving in cost. Grain, hay, cottonseed products, etc., to the amount of $300,000 were handled the first year of its business. Fertilizer is sold to the membership upon contract direct with the manufacturers. The trade in this one item alone amounted to about one-third of a million dollars. Flour is shipped to the branch houses in car load lots and distributed by tne agent. The new department recently inaugurated promises to develop into a mammoth business of itself. The Company has just bought a cold storage plant in Jackson at a cost of $20,000. In connec- tion with this they are conducting a wholesale produce business, handling such items as seed potatoes, eating potatoes, apples, oranges, bananas, lemons, etc., in car load quantities. Stock peas and peanuts are handled in enormous quantities, the sale of pea- nuts alone being twenty cars since Christmas to April 1. Poultry and eggs are collected by agents at the various ware- houses throughout the State. The miscellaneous line carried by the Company includes candies, soaps, syrups, etc. Preparations are under way for the establishment of a syrup refinery. (*I have elaborated on the Mississippi plan of operating Co-operative enterprises, not to give that great State and its Union leaders special advertising in this volume, because in many states the enterprises listed elsewhere are doing as well pro- portionately as Mississippi, but to show the advantage of consoli- dating smaller concerns and getting sufficient strength to actually accomplish things.) 12 ClI _ ® IS Ph 5-2 "3 ta el S3 O- o o a o a -u - ji ^ M .
