PRINTED FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION BY NOVELLO, EWER AND CO., LONDON. 1 891. PREFACE. ' I 'HIS catalogue is printed and circulated privately in the hope that it -*- may prove a useful instalment towards a Bibliography of Song Books ; that it is only an instalment will be obvious to everyone acquainted with the wide sphere of this literature. Considering the great interest of the books themselves from many points of view, it seems surprising that no one apparently has hitherto attempted this task. I am indebted for much assistance and useful advice to my friend, Mr. W. A. Barrett, whose know- ledge of the subject is as wide as his own collection is invaluable. Mr. Taphouse, of Magdalen Street, Oxford, has often given me generous help towards making. imperfect books perfect, and has presented me with dupli- cates, none the less valuable to me because not required by him. I must express my gratitude to my children, J. F. R., E. C, and C. L., for having compiled this for the press, and I can only hope that the collection will be still thought worthy of their care in the not far distant time when it will have the additional value of being a memorial of bygone days.
