INTRODUCTION. 
 
 •^ H . E L , a !l. guage of Flora has teen traced by its students to 
 widely different sources, each presenting some true claim to 
 the title yet none so entirely subverting those of others, as 
 to stand forth alone as its originator; for truly the origin 
 ot this voice of the flowers is coeval with their creation 
 and is still a tongue sufficiently simple and attractive to 
 have a charm tor every student of Nature, and to suggest 
 appropriate emblems even to the illiterate rustic, who plucks 
 the way side daisy, or the blue forget-me-not, to be presented 
 to some village maiden as the readiest expression of his love 
 i ?‘ ls ’i n truth > no creature of modern art, but the free-born 
 child of unsophisticated nature. “ Lovely as the rose ” 
 
 ‘ * air as the lily,” “Modest as the violet,” are phrases that 
 seem to come naturally into use, without thought that in 
 this emblematic employment lies the germ of true poetry 
 and the symbolic language of Flora; and though to these 
 will be found added, in the present volume, many wherein 
 the object seems less suggestive of the sense, and where the 
 idea sought to be conveyed is more complex and difficult 
 intelligently to symbolize, yet in this is only presented the 
 *i? ra i. ^ on S ue passing through the same progressive stages 
 that have characterized the annals of every spoken language, 
 in a rude and primitive state, the words are few and simple 
 that suffice to clothe in language the thoughts and desires 
 of an untutored race of man; but with every increasing 
 want, and every new desire, names and forms of thought 
 must be created, until the brief vocabulary of the savage 
 tribe swells into the complex dictionary of an intelligent 
 and civilized people. And so has it been with this univer- 
 sal language. “He cometh forth as a flower, and is cut 
 down,” is the expressive and universally intelligible language

INTRODUCTION. 
 
 of Scripture. And no less does it easily prefigure hope than 
 frail tv. We strew them over the shroud of departed love, 
 ami plant them to bloom brightly above the grave, that they 
 may speak in spring of a brighter season of hope, and in 
 summer of that heavenly clime that knows only of an 
 eternal summer and a cloudless sky, and m all seasons, 
 of love, and purity, and peace. To these, the simple expres¬ 
 sions of natural feeling, have been added trom time to time, 
 from the pages of classic poetry and the more complex fan¬ 
 cies of later writers, a series of ideas attached to every flowei, 
 by means of which the nosegay may be made to take the 
 nlaoe of more formal epistles. _ _ 
 
 For the more complicated uses of this beautiful language, 
 a <e\v hints may be necessary, to show how extensive is the 
 range of thought its alphabet may communicate lor 
 example, if a flower be given reversed, it implies the op¬ 
 posite of that thought or sentiment which it is ordinarily 
 understood to express: again, a rosebud from which the 
 thorns have been removed, but which has still its leaves, 
 conveys the sentiment, “I fear, but i hope.'-the thorns 
 implying fear, as the leaves hope; remove the leaves and 
 thorns, and then it signifies that -‘there may be "either 
 hone nor fear;” while, again, a single flower may be made 
 ■emblematical of a variety of ideas; a rosebud that has been 
 ah e'ad'y used and deprived of its thorns, says, “There is much 
 ■to hope;” but stripped of its leaves also.it tells. There is 
 everything to fear.” The expression also of almost any 
 flower may be varied by changing its position. Place the 
 marigold upon the head, for instance, and it signifies <J 18 ; 
 tress of mind”—on the bosom, listlessness.” M hen a flower 
 ,s given, the pronoun I is understood by changing it to the 
 right, thou by inclining it to the left. 
 
 To the intelligent reader, these suggestions may suffice, and 
 we conclude with the hope that, under the guidance of this 
 little volume, many a nosegay may change hands, and telh in 
 lits fitting language, “ a welcome message to lair lady s eai.

 This catalogue might be considerably enlarged, 
 but as it is permissible for the manipulator to 
 change the significations when requisite, the 
 above will bo quite sufficient to guide the judg¬ 
 ment in adding any other flowers. 
 
 The next portion of the game is the revelation 
 of the intended’s profession or occupation, and 
 must be practised in the same method as the 
 first, thus:—

 A favorite plan of attempting to peep into 
 futurity by means of floral agency is practised 
 by abstracting the petals of flowers, and with 
 each innocent floral theft using such alternate 
 words as those in the following verses. It is a 
 custom of considerable antiquity, and is still 
 affectionately preserved in many different lands. 
 A flower of the aster kind is generally made use 
 for the purpose, although daisies and other 
 blooms occasionally serve for the same opera¬ 
 tions, and, there can be little doubt, are equally 
 efficacious. Goethe, in the garden scene of 
 “ Faust,” introduces the rural custom in order 
 to illustrate the childish simplicity of Margaret. 
 In a poem entitled “ The Decision of the Flower,” 
 L. E. L. thus alludes to the incident:—

 1 Now, gentle flower, I pray thee tell 
 If my lover loves me, and loves me well; 
 
 So may the fall of the morning dew 
 Keep the sun from fading thy tender blue.

 He loves not—he lovesune—he loves me not— 
 He loves me—yes, thou last leaf, yes— 
 
 I’ll pluck thee not for that last sweet guess 1 
 He loves me.’ ‘ Yes !’ a dear voice sighed, 
 And her lover stands by Margaret’s side.” 
 
 James Lowell—as true a poet in thought and 
 word as ever breathed—has not soared so high 
 but that he could stoop to pluck a few terrestrial 
 blossoms, and in these sweet fancies, sent with 
 a pressed flower, finds pleasant pensdes in this 
 pretty practice of divination :— 
 
 “ This little flower from afar, 
 
 Hath come from other lands to thine; 
 
 For once its white and drooping star 
 Could see its shadow in the Rhine. 
 
 “ Perchance some fair haired German maid 
 Hath plucked one from the self-same stalk, 
 
 And numbered over, half afraid, 
 
 Its petals in her evening walk. 
 
 “ 1 He loves me, loves me not ?’ she cries; 
 
 ‘ He loves me more than earth or heaven!’ 
 
 And then glad tears have tilled her eyes 
 To find the number was uneven. 
 
 “ And thou must count its petals well, 
 
 Because it is a gift from me; 
 
 And the last one of all shall tell 
 Something I’ve often told to thee.

 “ But here at home, where we were born, 
 
 Thou wilt find flowers just as true, 
 
 Down-bending every Summer morn 
 With freshness of New England dew. 
 
 “ For Nature, ever kind to love, 
 
 Hath granted them the same sweet tongue, 
 
 Whether with German skies above, 
 
 Or here our granite rocks among.” 
 
 On Midsummer-eve, any girl who wishes to 
 peep into futurity, goes backwards in a garden, 
 and, without speaking a word, gathers a rose. 
 She puts the flower away in a sheet of white 
 paper, and does not look at it again until Christ- 
 inas-day, when it will be founH as fresh as in 
 June. If she then places it in her bosom, he 
 that is to be her husband will come and take it 
 out; but if, prompted by curiositjL she pries into 
 the packet before the appointed time, the charm 
 will be broken. 
 
 “ The moss-rose that, at fall of dew, 
 
 Ere eve its duskier curtain drew, 
 
 Was freshly gathered from its stem, 
 
 She values as the ruby gem ; 
 
 And, guarded from the piercing air, 
 
 With all an anxious lover’s care, 
 
 She bids it, for her shepherd's sake, 
 
 Await the New Year’s frolic wake— 
 
 When, faded, in its alter’d hue 
 She reads the rustic is untrue; 
 
 But if its leaves the crimson paint, 
 
 Her sickening hopes no longer faint. 
 
 The rose upon her bosom worn, 
 
 She meets him at the peep of morn; 
 
 And lo! her lips with kisses prest, 
 
 He plucks it from her panting breast.”

 Gesner, the pastoral poet and botanist, says 
 that the lads and lasses of certain Swiss villages 
 proved the sincerity of their lovers by placing a 
 petal of the poppy-blossom in the hollow of the 
 left hand-palm, and then striking it with the 
 other hand. If it broke with a sharp report, it 
 attested the fidelity of the wooer; whilst if, on 
 the contrary, it failed to break, it proved his or 
 her faithlessness :— 
 
 “By a prophetic poppy-leaf I found 
 Your changed affection, for it gave no sound, 
 
 Though in my hand struck hollow as it lay; 
 
 But quickly withered, like your love, away.” 
 
 A writer on various matrimonial and amatory 
 superstitious customs, observes that the belief 
 in the efficacy of St. John : s-wort is very widely 
 spread, and gives the following version of a 
 poem transcribed from the German :— 
 
 “Rosy red the hills appear 
 With the light of morning, 
 
 Beauteous clouds, in aether dear, 
 
 All the east adorning; 
 
 White through mist the meadows shine : 
 
 Wake, uiy love, my valentine! 
 
 “For thy locks of raven hue, 
 
 Flowers of hoar-frost pearly, 
 
 Crocus-cups of gold and blue, 
 
 Snowdrops drooping early, 
 
 With mezereon sprigs combine: 
 
 Rise, my love, my valentine 1

 “O’er the margin of the flood 
 Pluck the daisy peeping ; 
 Through the covert of the wood

 Hazel-buds with crimson gems, 
 Green and glossy sallows, 
 Tufted moss and ivy twine,

 Yet to me less glorious 
 Garden-beds and orchard-trees! 
 
 Since this wreath victorious 
 Binds you now for ever mine,

 A very ancient custom in vogue on the eve 
 of the anxiously-awaited Fourteenth of February 
 is thus described in the almost forgotten u Con¬ 
 noisseur “ Last Friday was Valentine’s Day, 
 and the night previous I got five bay-leaves, and 
 pinned four of them to the four corners of my 
 pillows, and the fifth to the middle ; and then, 
 if I dreamt of my sweetheart, I was told that we 
 should be married before the year was out.” 
 
 In a fiction attributed to Hannah More, it is 
 related that, among other superstitious practices 
 of a certain Sally Evans, “ she would never go 
 to bed on Midsummer-eve without sticking up 
 in her room the well-known plant called mid-

 summer mew, as the bending of the leaves to the 
 right or to the left would never fail to tell her 
 whether her lover was true or false.” The 
 plant here alluded to is better known as orpine, 
 and the above custom is thus adverted to in the 
 “ Cottage Girl,” a poem purporting to have been 
 written on Midsummer-eve, 1786:— 
 
 “ The young maid stole through the cottage door, 
 
 And blushed as she sought the jdant of power, 
 
 ‘ Thou silver glow-worm, 0 lend me thy light, 
 
 I must gather the mystic St. John’s-wort to-night; 
 
 The wonderful herb, whose leaf will decide 
 If the coming year shall make me a bride!’ 
 
 And the glow-worm came 
 With its silvery flame, 
 
 And sparkled and shone 
 Thro’ the night of St. John ; 
 
 And soon as the youug maid her love-knot tied, 
 
 “ With noiseless tread 
 To her chamber she sped, 
 
 Where the spectral moon her white beams shed. 
 
 ‘ Bloom here, bloom here, thou plant of power, 
 
 To deck the young bride in her bridal hour!’ 
 
 But it drooped its head, that plant of power, 
 
 And died the mute death of the voiceless flower; 
 
 And a withered wreath on the ground it lay, 
 
 More meet for a burial than bridal day. 
 
 And when a year was passed away, 
 
 All pale on her bier the young maid lay ! 
 
 And the glow-worm came 
 With its silvery flame, 
 
 And sparkled and shone 
 Tliro’ the night of St. John ; 
 
 And they closed the cold grave o’er the maid’s cold clay.”
