Bibliographies of Special Subjects. No. 8. CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HIGHER EDUCATION OF WOMEN. Compiled by a Committee of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae. BOSTON : The Trustees of the Public Library. 1897. 3> PREFACE. Mr. Herbert Putnam, Librarian of the Boston Public Library: Dear Sir — While expressing on behalf of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae its hearty appreciation of the courtesy extended by the Trustees of the Boston Public Library in consenting to assume the responsibility of publishing the Bibliography of the Higher Education of Women, I beg the privilege of making mention here of the thanks due to those individual mem- bers of the Association who have contributed freely of their time and labor towards gathering, recording and classifying the references relating to the education of women. These the Association now passes over to your care, with the belief that the skilled and experienced oversight that will be given to their publication will add to its value. The increasing number of requests coming to the officers of the Asso- ciation for information as to the history, development and value of the higher education for women made it evident that there existed a need for a full and accurate compilation of all available literature on the subject. Believing that the library facilities in and around Boston offered the best chance for securing such information as was desired, the Association recommended that the Boston branch should undertake the work of pre- paring a Bibliography. The initial step towards bringing together the cata- logue was taken by a committee of the Branch under the direction of Miss Eliza P. Huntington who was obliged later, on account of sickness, to re- sign her place, and the charge then fell to Miss Mary H. Rollins. At the suggestion of Mrs. Martha Foote Crow, director of the Bureau of Collegiate Information, Miss Rollins agreed to carry on the work as a sub-committee of the Bureau, and in that capacity was able to secure an appropriation for clerical assistance from the General Association to complete the work. It is to the patient and untiring industry of Miss Rollins that the pres- ent compilation is largely due. On behalf of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, Very respectfully, Annie Howes Barus, Secretary. February, 1897. EDITOR'S PREFACE The phrase "higher education" is admittedly unhappy, but its use in the present connection is not indefensible. Such a list as the following, to be of value, cannot ignore the historical side of its subject. It must, there- fore, take account of much early material, which, viewed in the light of pres- ent conditions, seems to, have little bearing on the phase of the question under consideration; and, for this reason, it is fortunate that we have a term the significance of which has varied from decade to decade. In other words, the relativity of the phrase used in the title is its justification here. It was the original intention of the committee to include among the American colleges in Section vn. only those which belong to the Associa- tion of Collegiate Alumnae; but it was felt that the interesting and impor- tant part played by certain other institutions in the development of the movement justified the committee in including them. The dates which fol- low the names of these colleges show the year in which they were opened to women. Most of the accompanying titles are such as the members of the com- mittee have been able to verify in the libraries at hand. A few others, how- ever, which seemed of special interest, have been inserted, although the committee cannot vouch for their accuracy. The numbers attached to many of these titles are the shelf-numbers of the Boston Public Library, and the initials P R indicate that the bound volumes of the magazine cited are kept in the Periodical Room of this Library. The list has been arranged accord- ing to the following scheme: I. General and Historical. II. Higher Education in Relation to Health. This includes physical education and the question of the mental inferiority of women. III. Coeducation. IV. Professional and Scientific Education. Law. Medicine. The Ministry. Science. V. Post-Graduate Study. VI. Occupations and Opportunities for College-Bred Women. VII. Colleges and Universities wholly or partly Open to Women. VIII. Societies for the Education or Advancement of Women. Author Index. The editor welcomes any corrections or suggestions. Mary Harris Rollins. Boston Public Library, May i, 1897.
