SAGE 1891 LATIN PRONOUNCED FOR SINGING By REV. EDWARD J. MURPHY THE PRONUNCIATION URGED By POPE PIUS X HIGH MASS For Sale by H. L. KILNER & CO.. 824 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pa. S3" imprimatur ^J/Jy^^^ j^^ *E. F. PrendergAst, Archbishop of Philadelphia. Imprimatur *JoHN Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York. Copyright, 1915 by Edward J. Murphy PREFACE TO FOURTH EDITION. This new edition will be found to differ in many instances from earlier editions. It represents the pure, unmodified, uncompromised Roman-Italian pronunciation of Latin, the official pronunciation of the Holy See. The use of this pronunciation was urged by Pope Pius X, in a letter addressed to the Archbishop of Bourges, France; advocated by the Irish Ecclesiastical Record (December, 1 904); The American Ecclesiastical Re^aew (January, 1 905); The American Catholic Quarterly Review (January, 1 908) and adopted for the most part in the dioceses of New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago. It is not so much the author's purpose to propagate the Italian pronunciation of Latin, as to introduce uniformity and correctness of Latin pronunciation amongst the laity. We believe that the modem Roman pronunciation of Latin is the best for practical use amongst Catholics, certainly the best for chant and singing. At present everyone seems to pronounce Latin just as he pleases. "All the faults of English pronunciation are ingrafted on the Latin, until faulty pronunciation of Latin has become somewhat characteristic with us, and may be called peculiarly American." It may therefore require the same courage to use and to teach this pro- nunciation as it did to publish it ; but you are sure you are right, so go ahead. In this work we have spelled out phonetically the syllables of the Latin words, " to make clear to English minds and tongues their correct vocal expression, hoping to have restored to these unoffending lingual elements their primitive significance and the full sonorous value which they demand." The words have been divided into syllables as we find them divided in the Liturgy of the Church, and however strange or unusual the divisions may at times appear, we have as our authority the authorized Missal and Breviary. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the late Professor Edwin F. MacGonigle. In the estimation of the celebrated Doctor Corcoran, composer of the Latin documents for the Second and Third Councils of Baltimore, the Latinily of Professor MacGonigle could not be improved upon. He spent more than six years in Rome, making a special study of Gregorian Chant and the pronunciation of Latin in connection with church njusic. During his practical career of forty years, he was at different times Professor of Latin and Gregorian Chant in St. Charles' Seminary, Overbrook ; St. Vincent's Seminary, Germantown ; St. Thomas' Seminary, Villa Nova ; and director of the Cathedral Choir, St. Jame^', and St. Agatha's, Philadelphia. The many changes to be noted in this new edition are due for the most part to suggestions made by Professor MacGoni^e. No word was allowed to pass without his full sanction. This competent judge commended the work in these words: "Any person who pronounces the Latin precisely as indicated in this phonetic system will have a beautiful and correct pronunciation of Latin." NOTE.— In this work, dotted % and ah stand for the Italian sound of A, which is pronounced like the A in fathom. The A in the Latin words MATER and, PATER should be pronounced like the A in the English words MATERNAL and PATERNAL. Many teach that this A should be pronounced like the broad A in FATHER, so that the Latin words MATER and PATER would sound to the ear very much as if they were spelled with a short 6. as MOT-ER. p6T-ER. The fact is that this broad sound is not heard in the best Italian pronunciation in Rome. ViDi Aquam. The "Vzdt AQuam" is sung on Easter Sunday and on every following Sunday until after Pentecost Sunday.
