Taken in its scope, I know of no utterance that in its meta- physics and morals is more exalting and salubrious than the redemptive word that comes to us through this writer. There are many notes of magnitude and hopefulness being struck in our latter-day ethi- cal philosophies, but so many of them are deficient in the fundamental requirement of any really illu- minative system of thought — the requirement of sanity. It is easy and pleasant to begin with a broad and sweeping hypothesis, such as that God is infinite being — infinite in truth and in love, and infinite quantitatively, to the point of exclusion of all other being — and from this hypothesis deduce a universe whose sky is without a shadow, whose rhythm is without a breach. Christian Science, for instance, is a religion quite logical and splendidly optimistic. Grant its premise and its deductions are just as rigid in their inevitableness as the deduction of pa- vi Foreword pal infallibility from the postulate of an infallible council of the church. But any religion that is go- ing to appeal to the critical spirit of thinking people must have a postulate that covers the facts of life and the facts of love, so far as they are attunable to the structure of the human mind and conform- able to the deliverances of the senses as they operate upon this earth plane. When a man tells us that there is only one sub- stance at the root of things, he may be telling us that which is true, but which is not true for us, be- cause we are so constituted that the world as it impinges upon our consciousness divides itself into two factors of being — ^the one spiritual and the other material. When we turn our thoughts within, we are conscious of spiritual being. When we touch the world by the organ of vision, or by the organ of hearing, or by the specific contacts of our muscles, we are conscious of a world that is different in its quality from the spiritual world that we know through introvision; we are conscious of a world of matter, a world of quantity, of dimensions, of spa- tial limitations, of resistance and ponderosity. Hence, the philosophies that are founded on a pure unity of substance, and that predicate infinite vir- tues and all the excellences and benevolences of that substance, fail before the crucial facts of life. They have a certain symmetry, a certain beauty, when Foreword vii we contemplate them in the closet, away from the stern realities of suffering, pain, the tragedies of the heart, and the great, bitter, searching mystery of death ; but when we ask them to confront the ac- tual problems that we have to meet in the plain, prosaic aff'airs of life, — the problems of the home, of business, of the larger interests of the world — when we ask them to confront the dark and bewil- dering experiences that are the portion of every spirit upon this earth plane at some time in its evo- lution and career, these beautiful optimisms prove inadequate. They will not construe into the actu- alities, into our sorrows, into our bereavements, into the bitter catastrophes that await us at every turn. The first condition, then, of any philosophy should not be its promise of a world that we all yearn for in our hearts, but that we can nowhere find in the facts of existence. It should not promise us a world without pain. It should concede the pain and give us fortitude to bear it. It should not promise us a world without the presence of death. It should concede the phenomenon of death and transfigure it with an eternal dignity and beauty. It should not promise us a world that is all strewn with flowers. It should admit the wilderness and strive, with heroic effort, to turn the wilderness into a garden — to make the whole world, its rough places, smooth by the fortitude of the human spirit viii Foreword and the coercion of the human will. One of the noble things about the philosophy of this volume is just this truthfulness. It preaches a noble op- timism, but not at the expense of sanity. It admits that somewhere in the scheme of things there is a break. It puts into academic terms the deliver- ances that come to the mind of the plain man as he meditates upon life and reflects upon the world. It affirms the reality of spirit and the reality of mat- ter. It affirms a creating spirit and a created world. It affirms original being, infinite in power, in wisdom and in love; and also affirms a finite world of creation — a composite of thought and of sense — a synthesis of spirit and of matter. Now, this world of dual being has its difficulties. As man is constituted, he has no organ that re- veals, that makes intelligible to him the process whereby matter emerges out of spirit, or spirit emerges out of matter. The genesis of matter from spirit is just as unthinkable as the genesis of spirit from matter. But any philosophy that begins with dual substances of spirit and matter has this ad- vantage over a system that begins with sheer unity of being — it takes into consideration the actualities of life and saves the human mind from the bitterest of all tragedies, the tragedy of believing that a vast part of life is an illusion, and that man is, by the very constitution of the universe, immersed in an Foreword ix organized system of lies. If I were to choose a philosophy for my guidance in life and in conduct, the first requirement of that philosophy would be that it must save the truth of the great power — not ourselves — out of which man, and the world in which man lives, have emerged. The teachings of this book save this truth. They admit, what everyone who thinks must admit, that there is a break in the scheme of things ; but I know of no more beautiful solvent for the problems that confront the himian spirit in its earthly march than is to be found in the large and fine wisdom of this volume. It brings to us, first of all, the conception of a gloriously efficient God — a God in love with life, with goodness and with beauty; a God infi- nitely fecund, who gives birth to worlds in order that he may have objects upon Avhich to bestow his bountiful light and love; a God who creates, out of an infinite fatherhood, myriads of children upon whom He may lavish His tenderness, and whom He may educate, through the disciplines of incarnations and reincarnations, into the beauty and the splendour of His own perfections. It gives us a God who, Himself free, confers the freedom in which He, Himself, exults upon His children. And the great and noble teaching of this book is that man must inevitably work on to a gloriously consimimated salvation — free to come and go as X Foreword he pleases — free to adjust himself to the will of the Eternal, or to rebel against the will of the Eter- nal — but bound, by the vision and the penalty that come through his freedom, at last to conform him- self, in a perfect act of submission, to the imperious will of God. We are hving in a day of magnitudes. We are learning to think in a large way about life and na- tionality, and duty, and love, and religion. The human race is emerging, step by step, out of those belittling provinciahsms that have been even more an obstacle in the way of its development than the gross vices that have dogged its steps since the very birth of its being upon this earth, Man has been petty in his most glorious virtue, the virtue of love, so that Love's page in the Book of Life is touched everywhere with darkness, malig- nity, selfishness and tragedy. He has been petty in his nationalism, and it has made him insular, im- possible, intolerant, vulgar and militant. He has been petty in his religion, petty in his conception of God, petty in his conception of salvation, petty in his Christology; and the result of his meagre thinking has been strife, division, schism and a har- vest of all the bestialities and vices within that world — the world of the spirit — where only the per- fections should live and thrive and prosper. But happily, step by step and line by line, the Foreword xi world is learning to think and to feel in a large way. Man is beginning to realize that his God is universal ; that He is not the God of the Jews, or the God of the Greeks, or the God of the Germans, or the God of the English, or the God of the Slav or the Saxon; but that He is the God of the planet earth, the God of the whole world — a God who reigns supreme in the vast scheme and enterprise of this universe. And not only is He vast in the scope of His being, but we are beginning to learn that He is vast also in the sweep and the scope of His redemptive purpose, in the range and the reach of His infinite love, I know of no modern book that works out with a more scrupulous logic the marriage of divine jus- tice with divine mercy than this book, which the author tells us is not his creation, but the utterance, through him as a transmissive force, of a wisdom higher than his own. He voices, quite within the operation of his own consciousness, a message that comes to him from higher intelligences; and this message has not only the probative value that lies in the high worth of the moral character of the amanuensis, but the infallible probative value that inheres in the magnitude and the dignity of truth itself. There are those who, by virtue of an intense con- servatism of mind and a slavish proneness to tra- xii Foreword dition, may rebel against certain positions taken in this volume. Some may waft it out of the do- main of credible literature because it involves a faith in the higher intelligences acting in and through the mind of man, in the way of suggestion or of vision. It is peculiarly repugnant to certain types of mind to think of the spirits that have been emancipated by the thaumaturgy of Death as being in touch with the present scheme of things. They seem to think that the spirits of the immortals would be defiled by coming into conjunction with life upon this material plane. They believe in the im- mortality of the soul : they believe in some mystical world in which the immortal spirits live and move and have their being; but it seems to them dishon- ouring to think of the eternities as interwoven with our mental processes and with our terrene affairs. But why so? Why this reluctance to believe that the two worlds are beautifully and gloriously inter- woven? Why should we put away from us as a thing incredible the possibility that the mother who has loved us, the father who has cared for us, the brother, or the sister, who has grown up with us in the same home, and with whom, our very beings are interlaced by a thousand sweet and tender expe- riences — why is it incredible that they, if they should make the journey into the Infinite before us, should return to aid us with their larger wisdom, and to Foreword xiii uphold us with their greater strength? It is logi- cal that they should come to enlighten us, to help us, to bless us, to bring to us somewhat of their celestial vision, and to beautify us somewhat with their celestial loveliness. Spiritism, to my mind, is an inevitable corollary of any faith in immortality; and when man ceases to believe that the spirits of the redeemed touch us and aid us, at that very moment — although he knows it not — ^he has vir- tually ceased to believe in the immortality of his own being, and in the immortality of those he loves. Spiritism is not, as many think, a modern super- stition. It is a faith almost coeval with man's spirit- ual history. It finds expression, with varying de- grees of intensity, in all the great religions of the world. It is of the very genius and essence of Christianity. The religion that centers in the life and personality of the Jesus of history begins with the annunciation of the birth of John the Baptist and ends with the visions and the voices of St. John, the author of the book of Revelation. Jesus is the supreme psychic of the world. He was clairvoyant. He was clairaudient. He prac- ticed the art of levitation when he walked upon the sea of Galilee. He revealed the power of demateri- alization in one of the great, outstanding miracles of the New Testament, the miracle of the Transfig- uration. xiv Foreword And is it not the creed of the Church that the Bible is worthy of man's faith because it has its origin in the eternities ? The prophets spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost ; and the unbroken and hitherto unimpeached tradition of the Church commands us to believe that the writers of the New Testament were inspired by higher intelligences. Take away the psychic element — the element of the supersensual and the miraculous — from the New Testament, and you contract measurably the di- mensions of the Jesus of history, and you bereave the religion founded by Him of one of its most ap- pealing notes — ^the note of the marvelous, of forces that transcend our understanding, and which yet speak to the deepest part of our nature because of their glorious wonder fulness. Others, again, will question the doctrine of rein- carnation that appears and reappears at many points in this book. But why is not reincarnation a perfectly tenable philosophy of man's develop- ment? He is here with a big problem to solve, with a vast world to know; and he has not time, unless he is a highly evolved soul, to learn its vast lessons of wisdom and of righteousness ; and why is it not perfectly feasible that he should come back again and yet again, until he learns the deepest wisdom that the spirit of truth itself has to teach him, and that can only be taught in certain phases of his de- Foreword xv velopment through earth experiences? I believe, myself, in ceaseless remanifestations of the eternal spirit of man here on this planet, and on other planets. Just as he stays in one form at school until he is ready, by virtue of his enlarged knowl- edge, to ascend to a higher form, so he must "go to school" in one world and remanifest again and again, until he has the vision that will prepare him for the culture that will be his portion in the world next higher. The fairest, sweetest teacher the world has ever known — ^the Jesus of history — said : "In my Father's house are many mansions." When our Lord spoke. His teachings were founded on facts. He actually meant what He said when He spoke of the Father's house and of the mansions in the Father's house. What is the house? The house is the whole universe, and the mansions are these won- derful worlds that you and I see on a clear night — ^myriads upon myriads of them — in the great ex- panse of the sky. These all have been, or will be, our habitations, one by one, until we have learned the lesson that each in turn has to give to us — ris- ing from mansion to mansion, each mansion of our inheritance increasing in beauty as we increase in the just and rightful performance of our task; each mansion growing in splendour with the grow- ing splendour of our spirit. xvi Foreword We are living in an age of wonders — an age that is learning the mastery of the most subtle energies of nature. We have conquered space, so that we can send thought flying from continent to conti- nent in the twinkling of an eye. We can transmit ideas through the medium afforded us by nature — through the transmissive power of the atmosphere, without the aid of any artificial contrivance of man. We can make the body of lighter density sustain the body of heavier density. We can float iron in water, and we can so command the air as to force it to sustain solid matter. And yet we are just on the verge of the wonders of the world. Earth and air have secrets to confide to the expanding intelli- gence of humanity of which we do not dream to-day. Why, then, should we shrink in fear and in, doubt before the wonders of the psychic world, before the marvels of which this treatise affirms itself to be the embodiment? Why should we turn, with a cynical smile upon our lips, from the proofs whereby so many able and earnest writers are seek- ing to establish the reality of the phenomena of au- tomatic writing, of telepathic communications, of the apparitions of the living and the dead, of in- dependent voices, of trance mediumship, and of the different and various forms and modes of spirit- ualism? It seems to me that these new wonders of the Foreword xvii psychic world that are engaging the thought of the most spiritual thinkers of the day will do as much for the moral exaltation of humanity as mod- ern inventions have for its physical well-being and comfort. We should all strive, with a great passion and reverence in our heart, to develop the psychic con- sciousness; for with the development of this con- sciousness within us, we shall live the abundant life, which the greatest of all seers emphasized as the central virtue of his religion. Life will be glorious when we realize that all of God's universe is quivering with intelligence ; when we believe that all the worlds are aflame with light and with love; when we believe that the universe is a vast hierarchy of spiritual forces ; when we be- lieve that we are living in a great, shoreless ocean of conscious being, whose supreme law is the law of noblesse oblige — ^that lays an imperative obliga- tion upon strength to bless and to serve, upon wis- dom to enlighten, and upon love to succor and re- deem, I have said in a previous foreword that my knowledge of the writer of this treatise is intimate, and his friendship is one of the sweet privileges of my life. I know him to be a man of the most de- liberate judgment in all matters that pertain to the affairs of this world. His temperament is hos- xviii Foreword tile to all fugitive enthusiasms. I can think of no one that I have ever known who is, by virtue of the genius of his being, less susceptible, either from an intellectual or moral point of view, of a delusion. Frequent contact with him through many years has taught me, with a cumulative cogency of demonstra- tion, that truth could have no more honourable champion, and falsity no more bitter foe than he; and so, when he tells me that the essence of this treatise has come to him by way of inspiration, without any active intervention of his own intelli- gence, I believe what he says to be true. I believe it because the faith accords with an instinct in me that responds, with delight and gladness, to the wonderful; and I believe it because of my invin- cible trust in the manhood, the veracity and the un- impeachable integrity of the one who claims for himself, not the honours of an author, but the more humble function of an amanuensis of celestial teachers. Joseph A. Milburn. Minister, Plymouth Congregational Church, Chicago. THE WRITER'S PREFACE THIS is the third volume of the word which I have been privileged to write from the dictation of personalities in the life beyond earth, who miderstand the meaning of man's life in its broader significance, and who view with fuller comprehension the relation between the Infinite Life and the finite hfe of man. For pref- ace I will make a brief resume, in my own words, of a part of the thought given in those volumes, hoping that it may help some to appreciate the san- ity, the cheerfulness, and the hopefulness of the doctrine which the freed lives would have us use as a guide for our lives on earth, and the importance of the earth hfe to the whole life of the immortal self. I cannot pretend to give in a few pages more than a partial resimie of their doctrine, and a few of its suggestions for my own thinking. A volume would not exhaust the thought that one may find between the lines of their word. Again and again they urge us to think deeply upon their word, to find what it means to each man's own daily life, and each man's own problem of mak- ing his life ready for the wider hfe of personal self. xix XX The Writer's Preface Most important to our right thinking is a firm foundation in truths upon which we can build with confidence. What could give greater assurance of the validity of a truth than its firm assertion by those who have added to the wisdom found through the life and experience of man the greater wisdom found through the wider experience of wider life beyond earth? The thought for help that is given us from that life beyond earth is based, not upon theory but upon knowledge; not upon logic but upon firm convic- tion; upon knowledge greater than man may find, upon conviction made sure by the broader experi- ence of life freed from the limitations of man. The personalities who give us this word say firmly that it is truth known to them, truth upon which men's thinking must be based if they are to think rightly of man, man's work, and man's life. They would lead men to their own unwavering belief that God is from eternity to eternity God; that He is the Creator of the Universe, the Creator of all that is beside Himself; that the Universe is because He wills, and while He wills; that its vast- ness, its order, its mighty forces, its marvelous va- riety in unity, are a thought of the Creator made finite reality by His infinite will; that for the Uni- verse which He made, and for every part of it. He purposes while He permits it to be. The Writer's Preface xxi Here is firm foundation for philosophic thought of men; adequate first cause, and teleological unity: the Infinite Creator, the finite whole of a willed reality, and omnipotent, omniscient and omnipres- ent purpose which governs the finite whole: the Cre- ator and His Universe. The Universe is finite reality, finite because created; beginning in time because created; exist- ing in time, developing in time; its existence and its development measurable in terms of space and time, though in terms far exceeding man's ability to comprehend. The only self-existent, measure- less, eternal Reality is the Creator. All else begins in His will, continues by His will, and is ruled by His purpose. The Universe then is reality not a part of, but apart from its Wilier. The metaphysical "Whole" is not God manifested in His Universe, but God and the finite reality which He willed into being. Man is a part of the willed Universe. He is, this word from the wider wisdom asserts, co-existent, not with his Creator, but with the Universe, since his germ was with original created matter. And his life developed upon earth from that germ when earth had developed the resources which man was purposed to use for his physical sustenance and for his work. Man was always man, always a life superior to other willed life, and when by the willed xxii The Writer's Preface development through ages he was ready for wider hfe than that purposed for other created beings his individuality was made an immortal personal self. This statement makes necessary the view that creation was not only an act of Supreme Will, but is also a continual manifestation of unwavering and progressive purpose, and that the giving of immor- tality to the self is not to be looked upon as a spe- cial act, an after-thought of the Wilier of All, and therefore inconsistent with the idea of a unified creation, but a fulfilling of original purpose. Man is a finite life, since he is not a part df, but a creation of the Infinite Life, the Wilier of All. Does the willing of immortality make that life partly infinite? The thought is not tenable. The Infinite is the unlimited; the finite is the limited. Immortality is never finished duration of life. The now of the inunortal finite life is limited, and the eternal now of the never finished duration of created life remains limited. The now of the Life Infinite is unlimited, and the eternal now of that Infinite Life is forever unlimited. The difference is radical and eternal. Creation involves not only the willing of matter and force but the ordaining of continuing laws through which the orderly universe develops. By the operation of ordained laws earth developed to the purposed fitness for life upon it. By the opera- The Writer's Preface xxiii tion of ordained laws the purposed life developed upon earth when earth was ready for it. Thus man became an animal life, fitted as other life, for growth, propagation by seed, death and extinction. Thus far he was only fitted for a life on earth, and there to finish his life, after fulfilling the law or- dained for preservation of species. His life was individual life which began and ended on earth. His faculties, higher in quality than those of other life, were individual, and capable of indefinite ex- pansion. But their expansion was thus far limited to that which could be attained by the individual during his one earth span of life. When that life was finished on earth its faculties were extinguished with it, Man was still mortal. But from the be- ginning of creation man's life was destined for more than this, and in the fullness of His time the Wilier of Life conferred upon that life His gift of immortality, and the individual man is hence- forth an immortal self. His personal powers, that belong to the life, became then immortal powers, and man's life was ready for the wider growth purposed from creation by Omnipotent Will. This completes the harmony of the Universe, and is the crowning act of a creative purpose not fulfilled until man on earth is made life of self immortal. What life is finite man may not understand. How life was made immortal none but the Wilier xxiv The Writer's Preface of Life may comprehend. By this gift of immor- tality of the self man was at last that which from creation he was purposed to be, a life fitted for worlds, and for the wide Universe, a life of self endowed with powers suited for its use forever, a life made in the image of its Creator, given by that Creator powers like in kind, though finite, to the powers of Himself, the Life Infinite. And hence- forth the further purpose for that life of its Maker is to be fulfilled by its own wise use of the powers with which He endowed it, the mighty powers of immortal personal self. And by the giving of those immortal powers the Wilier of life made it able to fulfill His purpose. The life of man, conscious of itself, conscious of its powers, conscious of will and purpose that look way ahead, conscious of thought not limited to the world which is its dwelling place for awhile, con- scious of its freedom to use its powers as it wishes, is the highest created being, the acme of Creative Purpose, the one being made in finite resemblance to its Infinite Wilier. The Infinite Will made man a life of finite will ; the Infinite Purpose made man a life of finite purpose; the Infinite Mind made man a life of finite mind; the Infinite Self made man a finite self. The Omnipotent will, self-exist- ent from eternity, willed when man's life should begin a finite existence. The infinite wisdom, know- The Writer's Preface xxv ing all, willed that life of man shall gain its finite wisdom through its own work for wisdom. The Eternal, independent of time, willed that life of man begin in time, and grow in the flow of time to immortality. And the life which He made free to will and purpose as it wishes, has, for its eternal must, to fulfill by the way He wills, which is through the powers that He gives. His eternal purpose. Here, too, is firm foundation for men's thinking. The material Universe, which is not made free, obeys the laws which God ordained as He purposes it shall. The life of man, which is made free, ful- fills by its willed powers God's unwavering and eternal purpose. The Supreme Will is sufficient first cause; the Supreme Purpose is sufficient rea- son; and, though the finite mind may not under- stand either Supreme Will or Supreme Purpose, they are the only concepts which bring to the finite understanding satisfying answers to the inevitable questions — what — whence — and why. The Supreme Will delegates to the finite will of the life made the fulfilling of His will for that life. The Supreme Purpose delegates to the finite pur- pose the fulfilling of His purpose. Man is the life who must, because the Higher Will and Purpose are supreme; yet man is free in the use of his will and purpose. But the Supreme Purpose is that xxvi ' The Writer's Preface the life made learn to use its immortal powers wisely, and through its own wise use attain the worth which that life is purposed by Supreme Will. Man is a willed life and an immortal life. Since man develops on earth, and is there made immortal self, the life of immortality begins on earth. Man is a life purposed to grow in worth, and that life begins its growth on earth. Man is a life of per- sonal self, and his life attains its growth by use of personal powers. Personal self is necessarily free, and the self uses its powers for growth when it chooses. But since personal self is willed growth by the will of Omnipotence, and is given free will and purpose, it must attain its willed growth by its own free will and purpose. The free personal life of man is willed wider life beyond earth. It must then, while it is man on earth, make itself ready and worthy for the wider life, for personal self would not attain forced worth. Since a personal self may forever continue to choose weak, or unworthy, or wicked use of its free powers, the Wilier of life, who is forever just, teaches it wisdom in use of its powers. The life must, while it is man on earth, learn how to make itself ready and worthy for the purposed wider life; therefore its experience in the life on earth is the purposed teaching. The per- sonal life takes to its wider life its personal powers, mind, will, purpose and memory, and it follows The Writer^s Preface xxvii that the experience of its life on earth is the teach- ing needed to prepare those powers for wider use in the wider life. Since Omniscient Wisdom placed the life of man on earth, earth and earth conditions are suited to that life. Since Omni- present Justice wills that all lives of men shall at- tain wider life than that of earth, and comprehends the possible weakness of the finite, free, personal self. He suited the life of man as it is, and the con- ditions and problems of that life, to be the very- teaching which every life needs to fit it for the pur- posed wider life. Then the daily life of man, the life for which work is the normal condition, is suited to be the be- ginning of the teaching of immortal life, and teaches that life surely. Work is the foundation of the life's teaching. Every man recognizes that a life without work of some kind is useless, charac- terless, almost negative; and a negative personal self is not fitted for wider life, and hardly fitted to be even a man. Then the work of earth teaches the immortal life something that it needs, some- thing that it must have because, in the omnipotent purpose, it must become ready for wider life. What is it that the life needs and is taught on earth? What is it that man uses in his work? The body physical, a delicate and powerful tool, but for use on earth only. Beside that tool he uses the powers xxviii The Writer's Preface that are given him as a life, his mind, will, purpose and memory. It is the wise use of those powers that the life needs, and the work of earth teaches that wise use. Those powers are the personal powers of the im- mortal personal self, and that self uses in its wider life and wider work the very powers that it uses in man. In man on earth begins their use, and while the self is man they must be made ready for wider life's use, for the self is willed by its Maker wider life and work, and wider use of its personal powers. And to immortality the personal self, which is by God made for eternal growth, uses in its wider and wider field of life and work the same powers which it uses in its limited field of earth life and work. We who are still of the earth life cannot realize what this means. But the selves in the wider life do realize it. And they realize it through memory of their lives as men. The conscious self wakes after death of physical body to wider life, know- ing that it possesses mind, will and purpose; and memory, that other power of life, proves that it is still the same self who lived on earth, and there- fore that its powers are the same that it used there. And while the self lives, to immortality, it uses in its wider and wider work, and to attain its wider and wider worth of life, the same powers it used in its first life of teaching, the life on earth. The Writer's Preface xxix And here we gain a broader mental vision of the importance, in the purpose of the Wilier of All, of the being whom He wills to be man on earth. The self of man is the one being created for eternal growth, and endowed with powers that broaden with the life's growth to immortality. Earth is a dwelling place and a working place, the universe is a dwelling place and a working place for the lives of men. And I think it is not too much to believe that, were the earth to fly from its orbit to the blazing sun, and be melted in its stupendous fires, not one immortal life of man would be harmed. Only the physical body would perish. And though this Uni- verse should, by the will of its Maker, cease to be, the life of man whom He made immortal would live on in some wider Universe adapted by Omnipo- tent God to its wider needs, its wider work, and its wider life. The truth of the persistence of human person- ality is most important to our understanding of the man's life and the man's work. Each man is a finite, immortal, personal self, free in his use of the life's immortal powers. When man has made his life worthy wider life it is his personal self which enters into wider life, and that life remains a per- sonal self to eternity. Man's life is not a part of the Infinite Life; it is not a part of a "spiritual XXX The Writer's Preface whole of life" ; it is not a part of a "cosmic whole" of life. After death of the body the life is not lost or merged, but maintains its personal identity. In wider life it is the same self that it was on earth, and by the wise use of the same powers which it used in man it attains the wider and wider growth which God purposes for it. And finally that growth, though it is the growth of the finite self, fits it for a life forever happy in the presence of, and in full accord with its infinite Maker. This life, which is so great in its purposed des- tiny, so great in its endowments, lives the man's life while it is on earth, begins in the man's life the development of its potentialities, has the teaching that is purposed for life on earth, and attains the man's growth; which growth is purposed to fit it for translation to the wider sphere of growth be- yond earth. Its teaching is through the man's life of work and the man's problems, for the life on earth is man. There is no getting away from the man's work and the man's problems, and no other worthiness to be attained than the man's worthi- ness until, through experience on earth, the life has become ready for wider life. And it is by the man's own use of the powers given him as an im- mortal self that his life attains the man's worthi- ness that wins the wider life, for man is made free. It is the life made free that fulfills the eternal pur- The Writer's Preface xxxi pose of its Maker. And it is the life on earth as it is, with all its littleness and its greatness, with all its problems of work, with all its problems of thought, with all its problems of ethics and religion, with its pleasures and its pains, with its oppor- tunities and its deprivations, which is the purposed teaching that prepares the life of self for the prob- lems of wider work and the problems of wider thought in the life after earth. We are accustomed to the thought that the life must be worthy if it is to win Heaven, and our thought has been that a man's work has no part in his winning Heaven; that work is the curse of earth-life and has no place in Paradise. But the wiser lives give us a different thought. And how reasonable it is! For what is the hfe given work by its Maker while it is man, if it is to forget how to work in wider life? For what is man given the immortal powers of life to use in his daily work on earth, if they are to rust in the wider life of the self to whom those powers belong? Is not work well done and well finished the greatest help in character-building? Does the immortal self finish its character-building on earth? Would one like to think that? If the personal self goes into the wider life, it takes with it the powers which it has used in its work on earth. Do mind, will, purpose and memory finish their usefulness because the self xxxii The Writer's Preface finds better life? Would it be better and wider life of personal self unless its personal powers can there be used in wider work and wider problems? The earth work is suited to the life while it is man. The wider life finds work suited to that life. The immortal powers of life are not limited to the pos- sibilities of man's work. No man finds the limit of their potentiality. Man only begins the immortal life, only begins the life's use of its immortal powers. The work of man, which is by no means all phys- ical labor, is the foundation teaching of immortal life, for it is the first teaching of the powers which belong to life while it is man and forever. Through work man, and therefore life, learns wisdom and firmness in the use of those powers. Not every man learns, some remain weak; but it goes almost without saying that the weak life would find no place in a sphere of wider work and greater prob- lems than that of earth. It can hardly take care of itself on earth. But that weak life is an immortal self, destined by its Maker to find wider life, and therefore destined to learn the wisdom which makes it ready for wider life. What becomes of the weak life when the man's body dies, and it is not ready for the wider life? The immortal self lives on, and cannot leave earth until it is fitted for life beyond earth. It does not vanish into nothingness, it is The Writer's Preface xxxiii an immortal self. It still holds the powers of self, which belong to the life, not to the body which it has left, and those powers must be made ready for wider use if the life is to fulfill its purposed des- tiny. Then the life that has left the body cannot remain sleeping, but must be at work, and since it is not ready to leave earth, and the life of self on earth is man, it follows that the self immortal is reincarnated in another man's body, and again re- ceives the teaching of man's work and experience. And it is so reincarnated until it learns the wisdom which God purposes that it shall learn on earth, wis- dom in the use of the immortal powers that are its own powers forever. The ego of man is the highest being in the created Universe. It is more than matter, it is more than force, it is more than universal law. So far as it is physical it is subject to the universal laws which rule matter and force, but its powers as personal self are superior to those laws. It dwells in the one physical body, but its will and purpose act to the ends of the earth. It is held to the physical body to-day, but its memory recalls its yesterdays. Its physical body holds it to earth, but its thought roams the wider universe. Given the powers of personal self, which differ but in degree from the like powers of its Maker, willed to use in finite activity on earth the powers xxxiv The Writer's Preface wl|ich Infinite Life uses in His infinite activity, the ego of man, in its volitional activity, both com- prehends and transcends earth. It is the one life on earth which rises superior to earth. It is the one life on earth which wills and purposes and thinks both for earth and for beyond earth. The personal activity of the ego of man is an essential in an active earth, in an active universe, "And for man all problems of being and thinking must make their calculations upon this inherent activity of the ego." * Man's life is "a birth and a becoming." The earth, the universe itself, are a birth and a becom- ing. The birth of all is by God's will. The be- coming of the material universe is by laws which He ordained; the becoming of man's life of self is by its own personal will, and finally achieves that which God purposes for it. How the ego is reincarnated we may not know ; we may not know what life itself is. That does not matter. We can recognize the justice of re- incarnation, which means that each life that is man on earth by the will of its Maker is taught the wis- dom which He purposes it shall find on earth through the same discipline, the discipline of man's work and man's experience. And it means that every life, though it be weak or unworthy or wicked *Shaw. The Writer's Preface xxxv to-day, will finally be taught. This is even-handed justice. God made each life a personal self; he knows the weakness and the strength of the finite self that He made; He so made each life that it learns through experience. Necessarily Supreme Wisdom foresaw what would happen on earth through the inter-action of finite wills and purposes. Necessarily He foresaw the weakness and wicked- ness of men through perverted use of free will. Necessarily He foresaw that the short space and the brief experience of one man's life will not be enough to teach every self the wisdom in use of its immortal powers that makes it ready for wider life. But God's justice does not make one life for un- ending weakness on earth, and another for strength in higher life. Every self of man is made for higher life, and every self of man, free though it be to will and purpose as it wishes, is by Higher Will purposed to learn the wisdom that brings higher life. Reincarnation is both penalty and op- portunity, through which the free self, by its work and experience on earth, learns to fulfill of its own choice God's immutable purpose. Personal self then makes itself worthy the des- tined wider life, and personal self learns wisdom when it chooses. The life may choose weakness or wickedness, and thereby chooses the penalty for weakness and wickedness. It may choose strength xxxvi The Writer's Preface and wisdom, and thereby chooses the reward of strength and wisdom. Justice to a life made per- sonal permits weakness or strength, but it would not be just to make a life free, and leave it to go on incurring penalty forever. Therefore the life is made more than merely free. It is made able to learn wisdom through its own work, its own reason, and its own experience. And so, given immortality, given the free will of personal self, given the opportunities of reincarna- tion on earth, and given the repeated teaching of man's work and experience, every life made man by Higher Will finally fulfills His purpose that it shall, by its own use of its powers, and of its own free choice, become ready for the wider life pur- posed by God from His willing of all. "God's purpose keeps life working on earth while it needs the teaching of man's life and work. His justice gives life the opportunities which it needs to learn wise use of its free will. His justice wakes life to its duty through the teaching which it has by His purpose." * The life of personal self is of necessity free in the use of will and purpose. When the life is ready for wider life depends on the man's choice. At no time, in no incarnation, is the life forced to become wise. But it is taught. Many a man finds earth *Eleanora. The Writer's Preface xxxvii life so pleasant that he never thinks beyond it, and wishes that he might live on earth again. That is not forbidden, and that man is very sure to have his wish. But it is by no means sure that another life on earth will be so pleasant. The self is pur- posed wider life, and Omnipotent Purpose must be fulfilled. If the self will not be taught to desire better things than those of earth through a happy life on earth, it will be taught through an unhappy one, and the teaching of adversity is hard. But there is that in the willed nature of man, the life, which finally rises above a desire for earth, and willingly accepts the teaching which God purposes that it shall have. It is not forbidden that it think itself satisfied with the little things of earth; it is not forbidden that it even grovel in the dirt of earth. But the willed nature is such that it cannot always be thus satisfied, or always grovel in the dirt, and God's purpose will finally be fulfilled because He made the personal self for wider life, and its innate being cannot be satisfied for always with the nar- rower life of earth. The finite life, made in the image of the Infinite Life, finally longs to draw nearer to its Maker. The purpose of God for man, the life, is finally fulfilled because He made man as he is, implanted in him his nature, made him personal self, gives him the powers of immortal self, gives his life the xxxviii The Writer's Preface opportunities of reincarnation, makes reincarnation a penalty when the life needs the discipline of pen- alty, and gives him the teaching which his life needs, the teaching of man's life and work as it is. God's purpose is fulfilled by the life through the means which He provides. In this thought is ground for firm faith and as- sured hope when the man battles valiantly with his daily difficulties and problems ; and herein is danger if the man thinks, — "Why then need I strive? God will make my life worthy." That is the very thing He will not do. The life must become worthy the wider life by its own use of the powers that God gives, and of its own free choice. The wider life is won by personal struggle, and each man fights his battle for himself, and when he chooses. Then this man who is life now may fight his battle well, and hope that God will judge him worthy the wider life, or may shirk his battle, and yield to weakness or wickedness, and thus will for himself another life on earth. Thank God, no life can will itself eternal punishment or eternal defeat. Thank God, the purpose of life's Maker is formed in love, and no life made by Him can for always evade the eternal purpose that it win wider life and happiness. But even love chastises when chastisement is needed to bring understanding. And when the life has learned wisdom through its penalties for weakness The Writer's Preface xxxix 01* unworthiness, love forgives and blots out the transgression. It is God's love, not His chastise- ment, that follows the life forever. And thus we are led to understanding that there is no discord between God's purpose and man's life on earth, and find the solution of many problems that have puzzled men. This life that we men live, with all its varied experience, with all its little and its great work, with all its high ideals and all its meannesses, with its pleasure and its- pain, with its good and its evil, is the very life which our own reason, if we think with this thought from the wider life for our guide, will tell us is suited for free, per- sonal, finite lives, beginning their work and their education for wider life. It is God's purpose that man's free will and purpose so utilize the life of man as it is that immortal personal life of self be- come ready for wider life and wider work. God's purpose must be fulfilled, yet man's will is free; God's purpose must be fulfilled though the life in this man's flesh be weak or unworthy; God's pur- pose must be fulfilled though the life need many reincarnations to learn wisdom ; God's purpose will be fulfilled, and it may be fulfilled by this man who lives now, if he thus chooses. What has life from its Maker for help to fulfill His purpose? It is given by Him the conscious- ness of selfhood. It is given mind that thinks, mind xlii The Writer's Preface This word from those whom God has taught, (for they have won the wider life that comes only to those who have learned through His teaching), brings to us who are still men a great and wonder- ful faith, that is timely in this day of the world's woe; faith that neither war nor pestilence nor famine, neither murder nor sudden death, neither weakness nor wickedness nor crime itself, neither the evil which man can inflict nor that which he may suffer, can cause enduring harm to the lives whom God has in His keeping and for whom He pur- poses. And while we give our tears of pity and our help for the suffering of the world, while our hearts bleed that men will misuse as they do God's gift of life, our faith may still thank Him that His compassion gathers every suffering and every err- ing life into His arms finally; that His wisdom teaches every life finally ; that in His purpose every suffering one will at last rejoice, every weak one will at last be strong, every wicked one will at last be worthy, and all lives of men will, of their own free choice and of their own free purpose, fulfill His benevolent purpose that the life whom He made immortal win wider and wider life, greater and yet greater worth, to eternity. "Then we who live man's life well, who find firm purpose for life, who will that wider life be helped The Writer's Preface xliii when we will to find firm purpose, will thank God for His purpose to eternity." * Wm. C. Comstock. Auditorium Hotels Chicago^ June^ 1915. *Dr. Coulter. DR. COULTER'S PREFACE WB who tell this word have won freed life. We would by the thought we tell help men to find firm purpose for life worthy. We tell the thought which life of man needs. Will Higher made life for earth man; Will Higher wills for hfe which He made man while that life is ; Will Higher pur- poses for that life wider life won by its own free purpose; man who wills for life worthy fulfills the purpose of that Will Higher; man who works as personal life finds through the teaching of that work the purpose by which life finds its worth for wider life; man who is life immortal wins the firm purpose by which life immortal finds its worth for wider and wider life to eternity. We pray God that the words may help men to, live worthily the man's life and win the better, fuller life of free- dom. xlv I WORK OF MAN WORK OF MAN Dr. Coulter. WE, the lives who work the work of lives freed, the wider work which God purposes for life which has found its freedom from worlds, would help men who work the earth work to un- derstanding of the help that work may be. Man works for his earth welfare, thinking that he works for that only. Work that man has is purposed to be the earth work of life immortal. That work well finished makes life worthy wider work in freedom from earth. That work teaches life for which wider work is by God purposed. Work that helps man helps life itself. That teaching which life finds through man's finished work makes life ready for the wider work of life freed. What meaning this gives to man's work! We help the man who will think. The work purposed to teach life man has for his work, but man works well or ill as he chooses. The life works as man works. When man wills firmly 3 4 Man's Life of Purpose that his work be well finished his life finds firm pur- pose; when man wills weakly for his work life finds not firm purpose. The life which is man has itself to free, for thus Will Higher purposes. Then life which wishes this wider life finds in man the firm purpose which brings the wider life, Man wills whether life find firm or weak purpose. But firm purpose life must find finally, for God pur- poses higher life won through life's firm purpose. Why then will or purpose weakly, man who would help life to freedom? You yourself find the firm purpose that frees life. The life which wills on earth for man's work is life immortal. When man wills for work well life immortal wins firm purpose. When man wills for work weakly life wins but weak purpose. Then life chooses firm or weak purpose in man as man wishes. But life which is purposed worth must find firm purpose, for only by firm purpose does life find the worth for higher life. We, lives freed, tell that which we know. Man himself finds for life immiortal the firm purpose which frees life from earth, and that which by God's purpose life must find it must find of free purpose its own. Heed the word, O man. We who worked man's work, who by that work found firm purpose, would help men to wise thought of the work they do. Man wins by well-finished Work of Man 5 work the firm purpose that life holds while it is. This thought will help many, we pray God. The work which man has is the work of life itself, the first work that teaches life for which wider work is by God purposed. Man thinks that his work is for his man's life only. We tell that man who works is working first work of life immortal. That first work, purposed for teaching, finally teaches the life for which wider work is purposed the firm pm*- pose needed in the wider life. While man works life is learning; but man works well or ill as he chooses ; then life purposed teaching has the teach- ing when man chooses. Life learns wisdom for wider life by man's work. Help work is purposed to be. Help it is finally, for that which God pur- poses all finite life obeys. Man who wills for his work well helps life to work well in wider life. Man who wills for his work weakly wills for his life further work of man. Each life wills freely; each life works by God's purpose. When that work willed for life on earth is by man well finished, life purposed wider work is prepared for its wider work. Think then, man who works life's work. That work which you have helps life if you will. Man works the work which by God's purpose teaches life immortal. Well the life works finally on earth, for the work which God wills to life must be finished. While life is man it finishes the work 6 Man's Life of Purpose purposed for its earth work, must, for thus God purposes. Will for work finished well life finds in man finally, but that life which wills weakly wins further work of man. Firm will for work finishes the work for teaching purposed. Only that life which has finished its work of earth wins wider work. The life which wills weakly finishes but part of its earth work; then that life wins but man's work again. Would man wish further work on earth when life may find wider work if the man will? Well then work, man who would win life wider. Work helps forward the life toward free- dom, when well finished. Each man wills whether his work help life to win freedom or no. Think, man who works. The work which man has, being the work that teaches life, teaches man who is life. What does work of man teach life? Firm purpose, firm will that help life to win the worth that frees from earth. What worth does life win on earth? The worth which man wills. Only that worth may life win on earth, for life while it wills on earth wills in man. What worth frees life from earth? Worth won by the man of free will. Does that worth free im- mortal life from earth? That worth is by God pur- posed; that worth wins the wider life which life must by God's purpose find. Then who wills that worth? This man, if he wishes. Would man's Work of Man 7 will, weak as men know it may be, win that worth which frees life from earth? That worth frees lifes God thus purposes. Would this man who wills for man's worth free his life by willing the worth he may? Yes, for by man must be found the worth of life on earth. We tell this for help. Think, who would win life freed. Your will well used will win the worth for freedom. Work helps life of man. That life win firm pur- pose work is by God willed. That life of free will learn to use free will wisely work is by God willed. Man has for his work the earth work of life immor- tal. Placed on earth by God, willed there to be taught firm purpose, firm wise free will, life immor- tal finishes on earth that work which by God's pur- pose is teaching for firm purpose and firm free will. God purposes for life wider life. Wider life needs firm will, firm purpose. Each life finds that firm purpose, finds that firm wise free will, and thus pre- pares for the wider life of personal self that is by God purposed. Man works as life for which life wider is purposed, finishes finally the purposed teaching. The life which is on earth man finds its wider life helped by the firm purpose and firm will found through man's work on earth. Thought helpful, man of earth who would win wider life. Your work wins firm purpose, firm wise free will, when you choose. Think well, O man. 8 Man's Life of Purpose Work, then, purposed firmly, wins the help which life freed must have, the help of firm purpose, firm wise free will. That firm free purpose helps life forever. Work of man is the life's work, Man who wills for his work wills for the life's work then. That work which man finishes well life finishes well ; that work which man finishes ill life finishes ill. When life finishes well its work for earth willed it wins wider life and wider work; but when life finishes but part of the work willed to be its work for earth, life wins but that work of earth again. Man wills how life's work be finished. By the free will of life personal then man finishes well or ill life's work of earth. By that work life purposed wider work must prepare for its wider work. Then, man who wills for work to-day, think. You prepare life for wider work if you choose. Think well. Work God makes the portion of life both while it is man, and when freed. We who live the freed life work as freed life is purposed to work, using in that work firm purpose which we won on earth. The man who lives his earth life working firmly prepares life for the work it has for help when freed. The man who works weakly keeps life un- prepared for wider life's work. Then work firmly, man who wills to-day. For life wider you work when you work firmly; for life of man again you Work of Man 9 work when you work weakly. Hear and heed the word from freed life, O men. Man who works for life wills for his work by free will. His life wills that which man wills. For life the will is by God made free. Work that helps life man has. That work helps when well done and well finished. Work for life firmly, then, you who have life to free. For life man wills well who finishes well the man's work. Then that work helps life. Why will weakly for work, O man? Life works well when man works well. Think, man who works, think well. Work teaches life. Man who works that work which God purposes that life have on earth wills for that work using free will. His wise use helps life, his weak use harms life. While life works where it is man it has God's purpose to fulfill. Then by man's work, which He who made life pur- poses must teach life, man wins the purpose firm which work is willed to teach. Help men to un- derstand this word, we pray thee, O God. Wilberforce. Will Higher, will of the Maker of Life, purposes for that life wider life than life of man. Worth that man finds wins that wider life. Free to will well or weakly, life made personal self wills for life worthy finally, taught by the life and work of man. 10 Man's Life of Purpose We, the lives freed, were workers of man's work that taught us the worth that work well finished brings. We found that help which work is pur- posed to be. Well life works when taught the wisdom that work of man finally teaches. That life who works well the man's work finds help for the wider work of life freed. Firm purpose for work helps life forever. The life who works man's work is purposed bet- ter, wider work in higher life beyond earth. Life finds work is help in man, for the life which is pur- posed higher life is taught wisdom by the life of man. Will firm is taught by the work of life, pur- pose firm life learns through work. Man who is life personal works his work well or weakly as he himself wills, but life while it is man finds, of God's purpose, firm purpose. Work finished of man, life finds higher life and wider work. Yet by man's work life personal, man's immortal self, finds firm purpose, Man who lives man's life weakly, man who purposes for man's work weakly, helps not his immortal life. The firm ptu'pose of man wins the higher life which life must find. But till firm pur- pose is won life remains worker on earth. Think, man of weak purpose, what meaning this word has for you, Man who wills for his work well finds the firm purpose which wins for life freedom from earth. Work of Man 11 When man wills weakly his life finds not freedom, Man works the earth work of life purposed wider work in freedom from man. Work purposed to teach life man has. Then the man's work will teach life, for higher purpose for life that life must ful- fill. Purposed wider life, purposed higher work than man's work, life personal wins the firm pui*- pose which life must by using well its free will in the work of earth. Then what for life must man will? That by work finished well he help life to firm purpose; that firm purpose he use daily for life worthy. Thus life finds freedom. Man himself must win it. Heed the word, man of weak pur- pose. The life who works in man is life willed wider work. The life while it is man finds the firm pur- pose which wins wider work, Man who firmly wills his man's work well finished himself finds that firm will and purpose which life finds by God's pur- pose. Then, man who would find wider work of freed life, will and purpose firmly for your man's work. That work which man has for his work is pur- posed for life to be teaching. That work is the earth work of life immortal. Then life immortal is taught by man's work. Will this thought help men? We pray it may. Work is man's help. That help from work which 12 Man's Life of Purpose man finds by God's purpose is help for life itself. Worth of life is found through firm will and pur- pose. Work teaches, when the man wishes, firm will and purpose. What thought for help! Man who works, think well. That work which life has for its earth work man finishes. When man works well, finishing the work, life finds firm purpose. Firm purpose makes life worthy. Then man wills by his firm will for work that life find firm purpose. Heed the word, man who has life to free. That firm purpose which frees life must be by man won. Through the teach- ing of work that firm purpose is found. What work helps life then? That work which man does well. Think, man who would win freedom. You find firm purpose when you will. Heed the word, O man. That work which man finishes well wins firm pur- pose for work. But life for which God purposes wider life must find firm purpose for more than work. Then will firm for work may but win bet- ter work of man. Life firm for both work and worth is life which fulfills God's purpose. We found freed life using firm purpose for both work and life worthy, Man who works, think what firm purpose brings ; work of man finished, life worthy, wider life. That life which works in man is life that works fVork of Man 13 further work when the man's life is finished. Work purposed for teaching life has while in man. That purposed work teaches life for which wider life is purposed. Life which has further work to finish wins through the work of man the firm purpose by which it finishes the wider work well. That life which wins firm purpose in man thus fulfills God's purpose. Wider life works wider work. The firm purpose which life learns through the man's work helps the life in its wider work! Think, man who purposes weakly. The life who purposes firmly it is that wins wider work. For work man was made ; his life works as man works. iHear and heed the word from freed lives, O men. When life in man wills for work firmly God wills that it find wider work. Each life finally finishes the work of man, for thus Will Higher purposes ; but when life in man finds weak purpose for work, God keeps that life to the work of man. Think, who would win freedom. Work helps life toward freedom when well finished. Work helps life while it is. Man of weak purpose for work, think. That man work for life Will Higher wills ; that life win through man's work firm purpose He wills. For life He purposes worth found by itself, for will He makes wholly free. But for the life who wills unworthily His justice makes the life wait for 14 Man's Life of Purpose freedom. Justice? Yes, for that the life find worth while it wills for man He wills. Then by will that He gives life that life is bound to win that worth. When that worth is found by free choice, the pur- pose of God is fulfilled. Then why wait for life worthy, O man? You work this day for life if you choose; you will this day for life if you choose. Why wait, man of free will? Your worth frees life. If you make this life to-day worthy you help to-morrow. Think, man. Will Higher made life man. His purpose man fulfills by will free. Work that His purpose makes man's work for life man finishes using free will. Then life finds that work help when man finds through it firm free will. Think, man who works life's work. Man finds for life through his work the firm will that helps life forever. Miltiades. Will for work life must find in the life of man. Work helps life. By God's purpose man works. That life find firm purpose through the teaching of man's work He wills. Man who wills for work as he pleases must finally find the firm purpose which work well finished brings, for that firm purpose life finds by God's will. That life find firm purpose by work God wills; that life find that purpose in Work of Man 15 man He wills; then life, which is man more than the one time, finally learns wise free purpose through the teaching purposed by God, the teach- ing of work. The work which man has is work purposed for teaching. Firm purpose man fmds who works well, finishing well his work. That firm purpose wins for life the worth that frees from man. Will Higher places life on earth, there to find the firm purpose by which life wins its worth forever. When man finds that firm purpose life immortal finds it. Think, man who purposes to-day. Each life finds firm purpose finally, but each life finds that firm purpose itself. The firm purpose that hfe finds through work of man well finished life takes to wider life and higher work. God purposes that life in man find that firm purpose, yet He makes life free in will. But His purpose life finally fulfills, though it be free in will. Then life which finds firm purpose for itself finds it by God's purpose. The work of man teaches that firm purpose. Man works life's work wilUng himself whether life find, while he him- self works, the firm purpose which life must. Why work weakly, man who works to-day? To-day will help hfe if you choose. Think well. We, lives freed, remember well man's hfe. For that life which is man work is help we know. For 16 Man's Life of Purpose that life firm purpose for work is help. Then, man who works to-day, think how your work may help life. Well finished work brings firm purpose ; work weakly done helps not man or life. Think what work is purposed to bring for man; firm purpose that life will need when freed. Now you may find that firm purpose. Think well. We, lives freed, were men. That life which man has prepares for this life. Man works life's earth work; man finds for life immortal the firm piu-pose by which life wins this life. For men what thought for help herel Man himself finds the worth for this higher life by the firm purpose which he may himself find quickly through the teaching of his work. Will free, purpose free each man has. When by firm purpose life finds this higher life, man him- self has won it. The work which man finishes well wins purpose for to-morrow's work. The work ill finished helps little. Work purposed to be help for life man has. When his will for work wearies man harms the life. What purpose will man find through work ill finished? Weak, wavering purpose. Think, man of free will. Work is help for life when the man wishes. Think wisely, man who works. Work life must while it is; thus Will Higher purposes. Man prepares life for its work of wider life. Will firm that life takes to its wider work man Work of Man 17 finds. Purpose firm which life uses when freed man finds. Mind well worked which helps life when freed man uses well. Life's powers man has. Work that teaches all those powers man has. When will used firmly wins firm purpose, life wins firm pur- pose. When man uses mind well life uses mind well. Those powers life takes to wider life. They must he made worthy wider hfe, or life works still in man. All the free powers of life which man uses help the life itself when well and firmly used. Work for Hfe then, man of earth, using well all the powers of life itself which you have now. That work which man has wins firm purpose when the man finishes it well. To-day will may win firm purpose for to-morrow. The work of life man has. His purpose wins, if he chooses, wider work for his life immortal. Work purposed to teach life man has. That pur- posed work finally teaches hfe the firm purpose by which hfe wins its worth for wider life. Man him- self finds that firm purpose, must, for he is hfe personal whose purpose is free. But that worth of life is by God purposed. Then man by his free purpose, which by God's purpose is by the work of hfe on earth taught, wins the worth of hfe which frees personal self from earth. Remember this, man who works. Find help, while working, from the thought. 18 Man's Life of Purpose Man finds for life immortal the firm purpose which frees life from earth. Work well finished brings to man firm purpose. Well used purpose wins for life its worth. Will Higher teaches through the work of man the life which finds wider life. By that firm purpose which man finds who finishes well his work the life wins its freedom. II WORK OF LIFE IN MAN WORK OF LIFE IN MAN Dr. Coulter. MAN was made worker on earth for the life which must beyond earth work wider work. Will Higher wills that life work both man's work and wider work. The life of man, being personal life, wills how man's work be finished. That life finally win fitness for wider work God purposes ; but till man's work is finished life waits for wider work. Then man chooses whether his life work wider work, or still work man's work on earth. That work pur- posed for teaching man has for his work. For work purpose firmly then, man of earth. Only when life works well, finishing well each day's work, can it win fitness for the wider work of life freed. The life it is that works man's work, the life pur- posed that work as teaching for wider work. Man thinks he works his earth work for man only, pur- posing for that work as for man's life only. We tell that man works as life which finds wider life and wider work in wider life. When hfe finishes 21 22 Man's Life of Purpose the work of earth God frees that life, and wills for it wider, fuller life. The work of life man has for his work, and by that work the life is taught that which wider life needs, firm purpose. Then the man who works well helps life that finds by- God's purpose wider work. That thought helps you, O man, if you think upon it. Well must man work who wishes wider life, for by the work of life in man that life learns the firm purpose needed beyond earth. Man works for life immortal. His work is the first work of life immortal. That work God pur- poses to be teaching for life immortal. Man wills how the work of man is finished; but he wills for life while he wills for man's work. Man wills that life immortal work well then. Will Higher wills that man's work begin immortal life's work. Then the purpose with which man works is the purpose with which life works. Will Higher purposes that life in man prepare by man's work for wider work of life freed. Think, man who works weakly; your work prepares but for man's work further. Purpose firm for work helps life immortal. Re- member this word, man of earth. Work of man, being life's work for earth, the life must finish while it is man. But man works well or weakly as he chooses. What must life find through the work of earth? Firm purpose that it Work of Life in Man 23 takes to wider life and wider work. The man who works well finds that firm purpose which life uses when freed. That which life must find by God's purpose it finds through man's free will. Man, then, purposes for life while he works his man's work. Will Higher made man working life. That working life wins by work firm purpose. Work teaches life for which firm purpose is willed, and through that teaching the purpose higher is ful- filled. Then man who is willed life, which life is by God purposed teaching by the man's work, learns finally that firm purpose which life must. But that purposed teaching will finally teach, not the man who incarnates life now, perhaps, but a man who incarnates the life. God purposes, and by the firm free purpose which life learns through God's teaching life finally fulfills His purpose. Finally every life fulfills God's pin-pose. Finally every life wins freedom. The will of God is loving will, and His love follows the life through its many lives of man, till finally life of its free purpose makes itself worthy the freedom He purposed for immor- tal life from the creation of all. That life who wills in man is life for whom wider, fuller life is by God purposed. That fuller life wills while it is for worth that wins still fuller, worthier, happier life. When the life which once 24 Man's Life of Purpose was man wills, it wills firmly. But that firm wiU it learned by the life in man on earth. Then that which life wins through man's life it finds help in fuller life, and fuller life wins still fuller life by the firm will learned in man. Then by man's work life learns, if the man will, (for he is the life who works), the firm will by which life finds its worth forever. Man works life's work for earth willed; man wins by that work well finished the firm will and purpose by which life wins freedom. Then, man who would find freedom for your life, purpose firmly to-day, to-morrow, each day you live. That man work for his welfare God purposes; that Hfe work man's work He purposes; that by work life find firm purpose life's Wilier purposes; that by the firm purpose won through the teaching of work life must for itself find worth for wider life He purposes. Life willed by Him finally ful- fills His will. Man, the life personal, wills for life worthy using for help the firm purpose found through work. Life finds freedom by wise use of the firm purpose learned through work. Help men to understand this word, O God. That work which man has help the life of man Purpose Higher wills; that life win firm purpose while working where it is man He wills; that by work life learn that firm purpose He wills ; and that Work of Life in Man 25 life in man win the purpose which helps life for- ever He wills. Yet man purposes with free choice, man wills that which he wishes, and firm purpose life perhaps will not win in this man. Then will for life worthy is weak, for purpose drives free will. That hfe who finds firm purpose wins wider life; that life who finds weak pm'pose wiUs for life of man again. What would this man wish, the freed life, or work of man again? Think, man who has life to free, think well. That life work God wills, for that His will be fulfilled through His teaching He wills. Man who wills for his work of free will has the purpose of God to fulfill through work, and that life who is man finally fulfills the higher purpose through the teaching of the work given for help. Though life is wholly free, the life who wills of free will has the will of its Maker to obey, and finally that life, will- ing of free choice, willing as life taught through the discipline of work in man, fulfills the higher pur- pose of God. Will free finally becomes wise will free, for life is finally taught that which brings wisdom, and thus taught, fulfills the purpose of its Maker. The work of man, being life's work for earth purposed, man does using in that work the powers of life itself. Man wills using life's free will, pur- poses using life's free purpose, thinks using life's 26 Man's Life of Purpose mind. The powers willed for life personal man has. By those powers life attains its worth. God wills for life which He made that by free purpose its own it win the worth of life which brings wider life. That wider life uses the powers made the powers of man who is life for earth. Man uses, then, the powers that win for life personal wider life; man uses them well or ill as he chooses; but life must finally use them for the worth that frees from man, for thus life's Maker wills. Then though life in this man may use them worthily or unworthily, life itself finally uses them in man worthily. The thought that work is for man only is wrong. The work which man has is the work purposed for earth work of life immortal. The work of man teaches life immortal, for that work is by God pur- posed as teaching. Then the work purposed as teaching finally teaches life. What does it teach? Firm purpose needed both in the work of man and in the work to find the worth which God pur- poses. Work to find worth? Yes, for life works for that always. None find worth forced, but all must work to find it. Why then may life of man work weakly? Because the Maker of Life wills that it be free while it works to work as it pleases. He wills then that life free in purpose find worth, yet life works as it pleases for that worth. But Work of Life in Man 27 what must follows life while it works? The must of God's purpose. The will which God makes free then must win for life the worth which God pur- poses. For life which wills for itself whether it work well or ill He purposes worth found of free choice. Work for life worthy, man who would win free- dom. Work for life worthy? Must life find its worth through work? Why have the words we tell been told? To teach men that Ufe worthy is found by work for it. Well the life works who wins free- dom, well the life purposes, and life worthy found through hard work for it wins the wider, fuller, freer life. Man who has life to free, think. Man who works is life for whom work is given that it be help. Will firm, purpose firm the life of man finds by God's purpose on earth. Work teaches firm purpose, firm will, and life finds its worth using the firm purpose and the firm will taught by work. For life its Maker purposes freedom won by its free purpose. Won is freedom then by the life who finds by the teaching of man's work firm purpose, firm will. Work God makes teaching for life of man ; work of man is work of life in man ; then the work pur- posed to help life man has. When, by the firm purpose which work teaches life, it wins wider life, man has won it, for he purposes while life is man. 28 Man's Life of Purpose The free purpose of life made fulfills the higher purpose of life's Maker. The work of life man has for his work. We who worked man's work know that we are lives who were men. That work which we did in the flesh of man we recognize now as the work of the life which continues through many men to this wider, fuller, better life. Man then, who works the daily- work of earth, is the life who thus prepares for wider work. His work he does as he wishes, well or ill, but the well-finished man's work makes the life ready for wider work beyond man's life, while the ill-finished man's work leaves that life unpre- pared for work beyond that of earth. Life learns while it is man that which life needs when freed, the firm will which finishes work, the firm will which makes life worthy. Man wills for the life's earth work then, and his firm will wins for life its wider work. But will when weakly used leaves work un- finished; then the life is not worthy wider work. For life God purposes both wider life and wider work; for both man prepares. Then while man works he must remember the meaning of work. Work finished wins firm purpose; firm purpose wins wider life; wider life finds firm purpose won in man help in its wider work. Man works the work of life immortal which is purposed to teach that life firm purpose. Man Work of Life in Man 29 works the work that teaches firm purpose for life that works wider work in freedom from earth. Man wills for that work using the power made life's power; man purposes for that work using life's power; man thinks for that work using life's power. When man uses well those powers the life pur- posed wider work in wider life uses them well, and the firm purpose found through the teaching of work life takes to wider life's work. Those powers help man, they help life. Purposed wider life, pur- posed wider work, life is by the work of man taught wise use of the powers it will forever use. Think, who would win wider life. Think what use you must make of the powers you have as immortal life. Think well. When, freely purposing, life finds the worth which life must find in man. Will Higher frees that life from man and earth. But the life may for many lives in man be weak. Then that life works further the work purposed as teaching. But the purpose of God will finally be fulfilled; the weak life will find firm purpose; the life who wills for this man weakly will finally in a man will for life worthy. Then when man wills for life worthy his life finds fuller life, but when he wills for unworthi- ness his life finds further life on earth. Would the man who wills to-day wish the further man's life, weak perhaps, willing again unworthily per- 30 Man's Life of Purpose haps? Would weak man win freedom for his life? Think, man of weak purpose ; you will this life of man worthy or unworthy by free choice. Have we helped you to choose wisely? Work of life man has for his work. That work life finishes while it is man. That work man finishes well when for it he purposes firmly. Will that man uses, his free power, he uses finally to finish well life's work for earth purposed. Will for work fin- ished well life learns through that work which Will Higher gives to man. Will free man uses for that work, the free power of life personal. When that free power man uses firmly for the work of life, (his work that is, for he is life) , the life wins worth for wider work. But man wills freely for the work which life must finish on earth. Then by the free will of man, who wills work well or ill finished as he chooses, is the purposed work of life on earth finished. Will for work well then, man of earth; will for life then well. Your life works that it find wider life and work. You finish well, if you please, the life's earth work. All work done firmly helps life. While man wills the work of life for earth purposed must be finished. When for work man firmly purposes life firmly purposes. Life wider purposes for its wider work using the firm purpose found while it works on earth, Man finds that firm purpose when his will he uses well, Man who works Work of Life in Man 31 for life well finds the firm purpose which life takes to wider life's work. Heed the word, man who works to-day. Will for your man's work firmly. Finish well that work to-day, and find help for that work through firm free purpose. For life man works, for life he purposes, for life he finds firm purpose. Well for work purpose then, man who wishes freed life. Your firm purpose well and wisely used for the man's work wins for the life firm pur- pose which life uses while it is. Think wisely, who would free life. Man wins freedom? No, life wins freedom. But life while it works man's work finds firm purpose. Who finds that firm purpose? Who frees life then? This man if he chooses. Then think, man of earth, think well. Thank God, O men, for His purpose for life. While the life is man it finds the worth for free- dom. While this man wills life finds firm purpose for life worthy if this man chooses. Will Higher purposes, life made fulfills His purpose by its own free purpose. Help this work for help with thy blessing, O God. Work of man is life's work for earth purposed. That life find firm purpose life's Maker wills ; that through the teaching of work it find firm purpose He wills. That thought will help the man who works. The firm purpose which life learns, that 32 Man's Life of Purpose firm purpose which life needs, that firm purpose which helps life both in man and when freed, man finds through his work. Will Higher made life for work; His purpose teaches life through work; man works because He wills; life works because He wills; that life find firm purpose man finds firm purpose. Then the man's work prepares life for the wider work that He who made life purposes. That life find firm purpose through work God wills, and His purpose life fulfills. Man wins through his finished work the firm purpose which helps life forever. Think, man of earth. You find that firm purpose which helps freed life when you thus choose. We, the lives who have finished man's work, we who live the wider life of wider work, would help men to thought of the meaning of man's work. Work of life man has for his work. The life who is purposed wider life works for teaching man's work of earth. Work helps life both while it is man and while it lives wider life. Work teaches life firm purpose. Man works life's earth work, wins for life by that work finished work wider, finishes that work well finally, (for thus man's Ma- ker purposes), wins by that work done well and finished well the firm purpose which helps life for- ever. That firm purpose which life finds by God's purpose it finds finally through the teaching of man's work. Man works the work purposed for Work of Life. in Man 33 life while it prepares for the wider life beyond earth. That work teaches life firm purpose which hfe. wider uses while it is. Man works for life immortal. His work teaches life immortal. His work finished, life immortal finds wider life and wider work. The firm purpose that life purposed wider life uses in that wider life is learned while the life is man. What food for thought! Man who works finds for his immortal life the firm purpose which life wider holds to eternity. When man finishes well his work his life finds firm purpose. When man works weakly, finishing work not well, life finds but weak purpose. Firm purpose life finds by the higher purpose of life's Maker. Freed life has found firm purpose. Freed life holds firm the purpose won by man. Then the life profits by man's finished work. Think, man who would help life. Why was purpose made free? You will help life when free purpose you make firm, firm for both work and life worthy. Think well. Will Higher, who purposes for the life made by Him, purposes that life find help through firm purpose its own. When by firm purpose its own life finds the worth which Will Higher purposes that life in man shall find. He translates life to wider life. Man finds that firm purpose which makes life worthy the wider life purposed by God. 34 Man's Life of Purpose Firm purpose helps life. That thought men find, but they think firm purpose helps for earth life only. The firm purpose which life finds by God's purpose while life is man helps life forever. We who tell for help this word found hfe worthy this wider life. We found firm purpose that helps life there where man works. The life wider uses while it wills for further worth the firm purpose won while it was man. Will Higher made life for worth. That life find through the teaching of work firm purpose He wills. But life He makes free. Life which is free fulfills the purpose of Omnipotence. Then life free wills bound to will as Purpose Higher wills? No, that would make life not free. Purpose of Higher Will makes life free. Purpose of free life fulfills His will. Man who purposes as he wishes finally pur- poses as Higher Will purposes. That finite life willed wider life finds the worth for wider life willing that worth itself. Wilberforce. The life works in man that work which God wills for life on earth. Man who is life immortal works the first work of life immortal. Then work which man has is teaching for life immortal. When man works well life finds the purposed teaching. When man works ill does life find teaching? Yes, all Work of Life in Man 35 life's work is purposed for teaching. Man who works ill learns but little; only well-finished work teaches that which life is purposed to find while on earth, firm purpose. Well then work, O man. Your work wins for life firm purpose if you will. Think. When man finishes the work purposed for life on earth life finds wider work in wider life. Man wins for life immortal wider work then. What meaning this gives to man's work! Work that man has prepares life for wider life's work. But what life finds wider work? Man's life, and by man's will life works on earth. Then what man wins for life the wider work? The man who finishes to-day his work. Think, man who works for life, think wisely. The work of lif fe man has for his work, the work which by life's own purpose must be finished well. Well life works finally in man, well life purposes finally in man; well man works, well man purposes finally then, for life on earth is man. Yet the free purpose of life man uses. For his work, for his worth man purposes well when he chooses. But the life finally, though it be weak in many lives of man on earth, wills that which God purposes, for life wins finally its freedom, and freedom is not won until worth is found, Man wills as life for which worth is purposed; but for that worth life 36 Man's Life of Purpose purposes itself. This man may be weak, but life then works further on earth. Penalty for weak- ness God wills, penalty through which life is taught wise use of its free purpose. Work purposed for teaching man has for his work to-day. Will he use his purpose well or weakly? Man chooses for him- self. Man purposes whether his work be well finished or ill as he pleases. But when he purposes that his work be weakly finished his life finds further man's life and work. Then man wins but further life of work on earth who works now weakly, for the man who wins but weak purpose wins not the worth which life must find by God's purpose. Only the life who finds firm purpose in man finds wider work and wider life. Think, O man. The work which man thinks weary teaches life for which God purposes wider work. Purpose firm life learns while it works man's work, purpose by which life finds its worth for higher life. Will Higher purposes well for life, and the life fulfills His pur- pose. All lives win firm purpose; all lives are freed from earth; not one but fulfills the purpose of its Maker. Thank God, O men, for the purpose of Him who made you life. Will Higher, the will of omnipotent God, wills you worth. While work is for teaching purposed, work teaches only when the man wishes. The life who finds by the teaching Work of Life in Man 37 of work firm purpose wins by that firm purpose the worth which God wills for life on earth. Thank God, O men, life wins firm purpose finally; your life will find that firm purpose, but when you your- self determine. You learn by the work you think weary firm purpose if you choose. Think, man who works ; your life will profit thereby. Will Higher, man's Maker, life's Wilier, pur- poses for life forever, and life made fulfills His purpose. Weak though it be while in this man, finally it learns wise use of free will. Then man who is life finally wills for that which frees from earth, for by man's will life finds the worth pur- posed for earth. Yet free man is while he lives, and free will fulfills the purpose of Higher Will finally. That which life finds in man, firm will, it is purposed to find, but finds it by man's free pur- pose. God wills for life work; on earth the man's work, in life wider the hfe's wider work; yet life must find the firm will needed in life's wider work while it is man. Will Higher purposes that life while it works man's work prepare for life wider. Help .man's work is, for life wins, through that work finished, fitness for wider work. Firm purpose work finally teaches. Firm purpose wins for life its worth for wider life. Firm purpose won by life in man helps life forever. Firm purpose life first finds in man. 38 Man's Life of Purpose Firm purpose won by life in man life holds for always. Thought helpful, man who works. Will of life, free though it be, must finish that work which God purposes for life on earth. While life works in the man life wins by God's purpose its own firm purpose. That firm purpose won through life in man life takes to wider life. Then while life is man it learns that which helps wider life. For that firm purpose life works in this man if this man chooses. That thought helps the man who will have help. Man himself finds, and the man himself must find, that firm purpose by which life wins worth for life beyond earth. That firm pur- pose which helps life for worth forever life finds first in man. What help this thought will be de- pends on the man himself. Man wills that his life find worth of free will, but man was willed work that work be teaching for his life. Personal life, man's self, works the work which, purposed for teaching, finally teaches life personal that which God purposes, firm will, firm purpose. When life finds the firm will, finds the firm purpose, depends on the life itself, for God makes life free; yet that which life is purposed to find it finally finds. Why may life will weakly? Because God makes it free. Then weak life finally becomes firm for life worthy because God teaches it. Yes, life becomes worthy wider life finally; not Work of Life in Man 39 one but becomes worthy, but man who wills weakly is man for further life on earth. You who think, find wisdom in our words. Work of man teaches life, for thus Will Higher purposes, but work teaches when man chooses to learn. Firm purpose which life finds by the higher purpose of God man finds by the wise use of free purpose. What for hfe purposes Will Higher? That by free purpose it win freedom. But free pur- pose may be unworthily used. Then the life who thus uses the purpose which must win the worth for freedom wins but worth for earth. The work purposed for life by God teaches life finally, for thus Will Higher purposes ; but until man purposes wisely life works on earth. Heed the word, O man. Work is help for life while life is, Man's work helps man; freed life's work helps that life. When through firm purpose won on earth life wins wider life, that firm purpose it holds forever. Food for wise thinking in this, O men. Heed the word we give you, man who would find wider life. Your firm purpose must win the wider life. Think well, man who has life to free. The work which man has, being life's work for earth, man must finish. That man wills for his work as he wishes changes not the Purpose who wills for life. Man uses in the work of life the free will of life. The man who uses free will then has the work 40 Man's Life of Purpose given to life for its earth work to finish. God pur- poses for the life wider work when the man's work is finished. His purpose life fulfills while it wills of free will. Then life for which wider work is purposed wills itself when it be worthy wider work. Wider life works the wider life's work prepared for that work by the work of man. Help work is by God purposed to be; help it is when life finishes it well Will free man uses always. His free will finishes well life's earth work, and prepares his life inunortal for wider work and higher life. Think, who work weakly. Will Higher, whose purpose life fulfills by its free purpose finally, is Will Omnipotent. He pur- poses that life find finally worth for life wider. While it is man life wins that worth. Then man who wills as he pleases fulfills the higher purpose of God when by free purpose he wins worth for wider life. Think, who will to-day. While you will life wills. Will free you have. Whether that will wins the worth that frees or the weakness that holds life to earth you determine. What will you will? You choose for yourself. That life work while it is man Will Higher pur- poses; that life find firm purpose while it is man He purposes. Man works that life find firm pur- pose. For wider life the life of man prepares ; for wider work the work of man prepares. While life Work of Life in Man 41 works firm purpose it must find; while life works the man's work that purpose must be won. Man is the life who finds firm purpose. But man is free. Then life finds firm purpose when man chooses. The work of life man has ; by that work finished well he finds for life the firm purpose which helps life in the wider life of freedom. Will Higher, whose purpose life fulfills, made life man. While life is man it finishes the work pur- posed to teach firm purpose. For life man works. His firm purpose is life's firm purpose. Well for life man purposes finally, for life finds freedom. The firm purpose that man finds helps in the wider work of life freed. What for life purposes the man who works life's work to-day? For life worthy he may piu'pose, for life weak he may purpose. That purpose which man finds life finds. Firm purpose frees life; weak purpose keeps life to work of man. Think, man who wills for life ; think well. That work which man finds help is help for life itself. Firm purpose life finds through the work of man. That thought heed, man who works for hfe. The will for work man finds help. That help is help for life itself. Then what has life found when man works firmly? That purpose firm which helps life wider. Think, man of earth. Work for that firm purpose; work your man's work that life find firm purpose. 42 . Man's Life of Purpose That purpose which man finds through work well finished helps life for its wider work. Man finds for life the firm purpose which it holds in freed life to eternity. Man finds that firm purpose when he wishes. Man then, when he wishes, finds the firm purpose which helps life forever. Miltiades, The life who works well, finishing the man's work, finds wider work; the life who works weakly finishes but part of the work for earth. Man wills that life work well, for he is life. Will for work well, then, man who would find life freed. Man, the hf e who works on earth, has powers that life holds while it is. Man thinks; life owns that mind which thinks. Man wills; life owns that will. Man purposes ; life owns that purpose. What use then must man make of those powers of life ? Think, man who is life, think wisely. The purpose of man finds help when man finishes well the work he has. The purpose helps life when by man made firm. Work teaches purpose if man chooses. What me aning in this word ! Help men to understand, we pray thee, O God. Full of meaning the thought we tell. Work pur- posed for teaching man has. That work helps life for which life wider is purposed, for through the work of man life finds the firm purpose which it Work of Life in Man 43 takes to life wider. The work which helps man helps life. Purposed for teaching, purposed to teach will and purpose, man's work teaches when the man wishes. Then this day work well, man of earth ; this day will and purpose well, for this work you to-day have helps purpose if you choose. That life find firm purpose through the work of man Will Higher purposes. Then that firm pur- pose man finds himself, for WiU Higher makes life free in purpose. When life finds firm purpose by man's work Will Higher wills for that life wider work in freedom. What thought for help! Will of man himself, purpose of man himself must win the worth which frees life immortal. Only when life has found firm purpose does God will for it freedom. Man who works life's earth work is life purposed worth. Man wins for life the worth which life finds on earth. Work teaches, when the man chooses, firm will and purpose. Then work is pur- posed help for life in man, and the life learns when man learns the firm will and purpose by which life wins wider life. Man who has life's free pur- pose, think. That life find firm purpose while it is man God purposes ; that life find firm purpose itself He pur- poses. He purposes work for teaching of life, the 44 Man's Life of Purpose man's work for earth, wider work for life beyond earth. Found by hfe in man, for thus God pur- poses, must be the firm purpose which life will use in wider life's work. Think, man of work. Your firm purpose wins for life beyond earth help for its wider work. That life who works, finishing well its work of earth, finds wider life, for that which work is pur- posed to teach that life has learned. Firm purpose life learns by the teaching of work. That firm pur- pose used for worth frees life from man. Then man who works well helps life to win freedom. Help men to think wisely, O God, we pray thee. Work helps life. VI MAN, THE LIFE OF FREE PURPOSE MAN, THE LIFE OF FREE PURPOSE Dr. Coulter. THE work of life immortal man has for his work, the work purposed to teach life immortal for wider, fuller, better work and life. Man works unknowing that his work is for more than man. It is for life immortal that man works. His purpose used in that work is the purpose of life inmiortal. The firm purpose won through work well finished helps life immortal forever. Man wins the purpose which life uses for wider work and in higher life. Then man who finishes well his work helps life immortal to win firm purpose, but when man works weakly fife wins not firm purpose. Think, man who works. Will you work that life immortal win wider work, or that it remain working man's work? You choose for life. Think well. Will Higher made man life personal whose pur- pose is wholly free. Man wins wider life for per- sonal self then, for man is personal self. What worth does life find in man? Personal worth, 113 114 Man's Life of Purpose which worth must be won of personal free pur- pose. When by personal purpose life wins the worth which God wills that life on earth shall find, He frees that life from man. Will Higher purposes that life find worth, and that it find it by free purpose its own. Life made fulfills God's purpose by the purpose He makes life's free power, the purpose of personal self. Will free of personal life wins the worth that is by Higher Purpose willed for the life of man. That power of life personal then fulfills the higher purpose for that life. Then purpose which man has accords with the purpose of his Maker finally. When life finally wills that which Purpose Higher wills it must, He frees that life from man. While life lasts Purpose Higher wills for it. Life free in purpose fulfills His will. That purpose which wins freedom for life is the purpose of man. When man purposes life purposes, and when life purposes with firm pur- pose to win worth life wins freedom. Man is the life who purposes. When man purposes firmly for worth then, the life wins freedom. Work God wills for life on earth that by its teaching life find the firm purpose by which it finds worth for free- dom. Help men to think wisely, O God. Man, who has his free purpose by his Maker's will, has the life of personal self. But life which is man has God's purpose to fulfill. Willed free MaUj the Life of Free Purpose 115 purpose, willed worth, man finds the willed worth by wise use of his own purpose. But his purpose may be weak or firm, since he purposes as he chooses. Then the free purpose made man's power fulfills or not, as the man pleases, God's higher pur- pose. The life who fulfills God's purpose He re- wards by giving it freedom, but the life who fulfills not His purpose He wills to be man again. What food for thought, O man who uses free purpose! Think what you will make your purpose. That work which man has will finally teach his life firm will, for thus God purposes ; but life free of purpose wills to-day as it chooses. While life wills the higher will of God purposes for it. That purpose life must fulfill, but God wills that His purpose be fulfilled by life of free purpose. When that life made free purposes for the worth which Higher Will purposes that life shall find, when that life free of purpose chooses worth, God wills for it freedom, higher life, worthier life. When that life free of purpose forgets worth, when that free life wills wickedly, God wills for it penalty. What penalty? Penalty which keeps life working still as man, willing still for man's little fife, pur- posing still for the world welfare. Then, man who wills, think. Your free will, your free purpose will, if you thus choose, make life immortal worthy wider life. Will you choose this, or further life 116 Man's Life of Purpose of man? God makes you free. What then will you choose? Think, man of free purpose, think. When man purposes firmly that his worth he find, life itself thus purposes; when man pur- poses unworthily life itself thus purposes. Man who uses life's purpose, what purpose will you find this time of life on earth ; what purpose, worthy or unworthy? Choose for yourself, for you are the life who purposes. The man who wills firmly that the work which he has be well finished wins firm purpose. When life wins this life it has found firm purpose. That firm purpose which it found in man remains firm while life works its wider work. Then that which man finds help for his life freed life finds help for that life. While life is, firm purpose is help. Man wins firm purpose when he wishes. His work teaches that firm purpose when the man wishes. Then man himself wills that life find the firm pur- pose which helps life forever. We who were men, who have won the life of freedom, would help men to understand what man must be to win this life. We were workers while we were men. The firm purpose which life needs when freed we won in man's life. The firm will that wavers not for worth we won as men. This life holds firm purpose, O men. What meaning for man's life this gives 1 Man, who is life for which MaTij the Life of Free Purpose 117 wider life is by God purposed, finds, while he works the man's work, the firm purpose which his hfe will use when freed. Not man who finds weak purpose, but man who finds firm purpose wins free- dom for his life. Think, man of earth. That life who works for worth firmly, who wills for hfe worthy with unwavering purpose, has found that which life in man was purposed from the mak- ing of life to find. That firm purpose life wins through work; that firm purpose life wins while it is man. Then that firm purpose man himself finds, thus fulfilling the purpose for which hfe was made man by the Wilier of Life. Will Higher, man's Maker, Wilier for life of free purpose, made life which purposes while it is for wider and wider life. Will Higher, whose purpose life which He made fulfills, wills while life is for that hfe. While life purposes He pur- poses for it ; while life wins that freedom purposed when life was made He purposes for it. His pur- pose, the purpose of Higher Life, finite hfe fulfills. What worth wills He that life find in man? The worth of man. Then by free purpose that He made power of life the life while it is man fulfills His purpose. What finds life that purposes well? Freedom, will firm, freedom from weak purpose, wider worth. Found by the purpose which Will Higher makes free is the worth of life forever. 118 Man's Life of Purpose Will Higher was when other life made by him was not. His will, the will of Life Infinite, willed life finite into being. Will that made life follows life while He permits it to be. His purpose that life fulfills. His will gives to the life which He made the free powers of life personal. Then that life fulfills His purpose by wise use of free pur- pose. Man, the life made finite, fulfills by finite will the purpose of his Maker. When that finite life purposes for that which by God's purpose it must, the worth that makes life worthy freedom, its purpose free fulfills the higher purpose. Man who wills freely, man who purposes for life worthy or not as he chooses, finally purposes for worth. His free purpose he finally uses well, for that which God wills life finite fulfills. How then may life which must finally purpose worth purpose, when it wishes, unworthiness? Man is made free; that an- swers. Then while life of man purposes for the life of earth it fulfills the purpose of God. When does that life fulfill the Higher Purpose? When by free choice it purposes worth. For life which He wills wider life He wills free purpose its own. That free purpose which finally fulfills the higher purpose of Him who made it free, man has as life that finds finally wider, fuller life. What food for thought here, man of earth! Think what it means to the life you have. Think wisely, for MaUj the Life of Free Purpose 119 life profits by wise thought. Man, who purposes for man's life, finally purposes that which Will Higher wills that life of man shall. Finite purpose fulfills omnipotent purpose ; finite will ful- fills omnipotent will. God made life personal self, willed for it the free powers of personal self, willed that by the powers of personal self life shall ful- fill His purpose. Man is the life whose powers, finite though they be, fulfill the will of man's Maker. By will his own man makes his life worthy ; by purpose his own man wins wider life of self, Man, the life finite, by finite power made his by Will Higher fulfills the purpose of that Higher Will. Will Higher, man's Maker, purposes for man that by free will he make his life worthy. Man who wills his life worthy wins for life of self the wider life which God purposes. Think, man who purposes for life, think well. That firm purpose which frees life will be found by life while it is man; thus Will Higher purposes. Yet His will makes life free. Purpose of free per- sonal life then fulfills God's purpose. When life who wills that which it wishes finds firm purpose to will that which God purposes, He wills for that life freedom, wider life, happy life. When the life who purposes well finds worth for freedom, man finds the free power made his the help which God purposes it must finally be. When the life wins freedom man has won it. Think well, man who uses free purpose. That free purpose must win for you, the life, the worth for this life. When man who wills for life wills well life finds that worth which by the purpose of its Maker it must find where life is man. Firm purpose will be found by life; thus Will Higher wills. But life was made free. Then finding weak purpose is man's choice. For what has life to will there on earth? For the worth which He purposes who made fife. Then man who freely purposes wills that worth which life must. Remember, man of earth, that free purpose which you use must win for your life its freedom. The firm purpose which man finds life holds while it is. Well has man pin*- posed when life finds freedom, well has life pur- posed while it is man. Then, man who is life, purpose firmly while you live this man's life. What for life purposes its Maker? Worth for life wider 138 Man's Life of Purpose won by itself. Firm purpose wins that worth. Think for life, man of earth, think well. Man who wills his worth himself wills that worth because God thus purposes, yet man wills that worth when he wishes. But man wills as life. Then life finally fulfills God's purpose willing the worth which frees life by his free will. Help men to understand this thought ; free purpose of man, the free purpose of life willed worth, wins that willed worth, and life purposed wider life wills itself its worth for wider life. Purpose free of life fulfills the higher purpose of life's Maker. VII WILL FOR LIFE WORTHY WILL FOR LIFE WORTHY Dr. Coulter. MAN is the life who finds wider life. His worth is the worth of life itself. When man wills for life worthy his life thus wills. That will by which man finds his worth is the will by which life finds worth to eternity. What food for thought here ! We tell it for help. Think, who live man's life. Your will it is, yet life's will too, which must make life itself, your life, worthy freedom. When you will firmly for life worthy life itself wins freedom. The life wills while it is man for wider life using the man's will, using then its own will free, for man is the life on earth. When for life worthy man wills the life finds worth; when for life unworthy man wills the life is unworthy. God places life on earth, purposes that there it find life worthy, but He makes life free in will. Man wins the worth that personal life wills then, and that worth finally frees life from earth. What from this thought fol- lows? This man may will unworthily, this life of 141 142 Man's Life of Purpose will free may use will weakly, but finally this life who wills unworthily in this man finds life worthy. The higher purpose for life life fulfills using free will. God purposes for life that finally it find in man the worth that frees from life of earth. His purpose life free in will fulfills. Man wins that worth which frees life from earth, man finds that firm purpose which helps life when freed, man wins the worth by which God purposes that life be helped to wider worth when freed. Man who wills for life to-day, think. How will you use the life of man? Will firm must help the life who wishes freedom. Your will it is which must be firm for both work and life worthy, for you are the life itself. What will you make this life, worthy or unworthy? Heed the word, O man. Will for life worthy life finds while it is man, for thus the will of life's Maker purposes. Man wins that will through his life of work, for that life teaches firm purpose when the man thus chooses. Then work of life is help to worth of life ; yes, for the firm purpose which helps life to find worth is won through the teaching of work. He who thus finds firm purpose helps life for its wider life, for firm purpose helps life forever. Think, man of weak purpose. Help life well you may ; you the man have the purpose you wish. What life wins this freed life? The life who firmly purposes for worth. Will for Life Worthy 143 What life finds firm purpose? That life who wills in man to find it. That which man wills life wills, and life finds firm purpose when man thus chooses. While life is man it works for wider life; while life is man it finds that firm purpose by which it wins worth while it is; yet for that firm purpose man wills when he wishes. For that firm purpose work, O man who has life to free. Will Higher, whose purpose that which He made fulfills, wills for life worth found by free purpose. What finds life by His purpose? Firm wise will, firm for work, firm for life worthy. He who made life teaches it finally. When will free wins for life worth life fulfills the purpose of its Maker. That which helps man to worth of life helps life immortal. Man wills that his worth win freedom; his will firm wins worth for life. While man wills using the free will made life's power, he uses the will of man; while man wills for man then, using his free will, he wills for life using life's free will. The man who wills worth wills for life worth; the man who wills unworthiness wills for life unworthiness. Man who lives the earth life wins for bis immortal life wider life using his own free will for worth. Then this man who wills for himself worth wins wider life for himself, the life immortal. He who wills that he himself win worth wills that life win 144 Man's Life of Purpose worth. Then life wins wider life by man's choice. Think then, man who wills for life, think well. Will for life worthy man finds himself. His free will he uses to win the worth which makes life immortal worthy wider life. Man lives earth life willing for life wider if he wishes thus to will. His life worthy is Ufe immortal worthy; his man's worth is the worth on earth of life immortal. Then, man who wills for life, think. What must you will to win for your life immortal wider life, freed from man's weakness, full with worth, willing firmly for life yet wider while life lasts? Think well, O man. Wilherforce. That life which finds worth itself finds wider life, Man who wills his life worthy wins by that will the higher life which God purposes that life shall find. The worth which life finds it finds by wise use of its own free purpose. That purpose which man uses frees the life immortal from earth. Then man purposes finally the worth which brings wider life. But the free purpose man uses for both worth and weakness; his will, his purpose, both free, he uses well or ill as he chooses. Then the purpose which life uses may be by man used unworthily, but finally that purpose will be well used, for life wins freedom by God's purpose, though it purposes its Will for Ldfe Worthy 145 worth itself. For life man purposes well when the life is taught wise free purpose. The life of man teaches life immortal wise purpose. Finally life purposes worth that frees. Man who firmly pur- poses his life worthy finds firm purpose which frees life from earth, Man wins his worth himself. His worth is life's worth. His worth makes life immortal ready for the wider life which by God's purpose self finds. Wider life wins the wider worth that God purposes through wise use of its free will. The first worth of life personal man wills. His free will is the free power of that life which by God's purpose finds wider life. Man wills his worth as life which finds finally wider life then, and his free will wins that worth which life must. Will free of life wins for fife the wider life purposed by life's Maker. Will free of man wins life's worth for that wider life which, by the same free will, wins wider worth to eternity. Think, man who has for use life's free will, think wisely. That will by which life wins its worth for earth man uses, for he is the life for earth. Will free becomes firm will for life worthy finally, for thus Will Higher purposes, but life in man wills for worth when it chooses. Will for life worthy life finds then when the man will. Well life wills finally, helped by its Maker. Help for life man 146 Man's Life of Purpose finds through prayer for that help, yet firmly pur- posing himself that his life find worth. Work helps life of free purpose, for by work finished well the life finds firm free purpose. But work may be weakly done. Then the life finds but weak purpose. That firm free purpose which life finds through work finished well it takes to wider life. Firm life is when freed, for the firm purpose which it found on earth life holds for- ever. Then what for man wills Higher Purpose? That for life he find the firm purpose through which life personal wins worth to eternity. What thought for help this! We tell that man, the free life immortal on earth, finally finds the firm pur- pose by which life immortal wins its worth while life lasts, to eternity. Help men to understand, we pray, O God. Will for life worthy man finds through prayer to his Maker. God wills His help to the life who prays for will to fulfill His will. Prayer for will worthy may win God's help, or may fall lifeless. When prayer wins God's help life finds worth for higher life. Will for life worthy life finds for itself when helped by life's Maker. Remember this, man who would find that will. Pray for God's help hon- estly, for thus the life wins that help. Purpose of Him who permits to life free pur- pose its own follows that life while it freely pur- Will for Life Worthy 147 poses, helping life to firm purpose, teaching life while it works. For life He who willed it purposes, and that life, free while it is, fulfills His purpose. By free purpose its own life finds the worth which Purpose Higher wills that it find. While life pur- poses as it wishes, life finally fulfills the higher purpose of its Maker. The free purpose made life's power fulfills God's purpose. Man wills for life worthy when he pleases. Life for whom wider life is by Higher Purpose willed finally, while it purposes in man, wills that which the higher pur- pose of God wills that it must, the worth for this higher, fuller, happier life. Will Higher, man's Maker, wills that while life is man it find the worth for wider life. Then man finds that worth himself. His firm purpose wins that worth which by Higher Will life personal finds on earth. Man is the life who wills for life wider. Man, who wills by free will, finds for life immortal the worth which frees life immortal from earth. Think, man of free purpose. When you purpose firmly for life worthy you win for life personal wider life of freedom. Firm purpose this man finds if he thus wishes. Think, who would find free- dom. Will for that firm purpose which helps life for the life of earth and forever. Will for life worthy life of man finds finally. While life wills for that worth which Will Higher 148 Man's Life of Purpose purposes, His purpose follows it. Then when life finds the worth for freedom it fulfills God's pur- pose. Then man who wills that his life be worthy fulfills God's purpose. What for life purposes the Wilier of Life? Worth found by itself. Then life who wills for worth fulfills thus the purpose of Higher Will. But man may will weakness ; then that life fulfills not God's purpose. Man who wills for life, think. While you will your life may find the worth which life's Maker purposes. Think well. Will for life worthy man finds when he wishes. Man wins by his free will then the worth of life immortal. That thought means much, man who wills for life. Personal life wins the life wider. Man wins for life personal the worth which wins personal wider life. Think, who would win wider life. Will that wins that life is man's free will. Win that life wider this man may. Why wait then, man who is life immortal, why wait for that firm will for life worthy which makes life ready for wider life? You yourself win that will when you choose. Think well, O man. Man himself wills that life personal find the life of freedom. His free will he uses for his worth of life. That will he himself makes firm for life worthy. Then by man's free will life of personal self wins the wider life which God purposes. Think Will for lAfe Worthy 149. what I tell, — ^Man, who wills freely always, wins for life personal the wider life of freedom if he thus wishes. Heed the word, O man. Miltiades. The free will of man wins life worthy. For worth purposed by God man wills by his free power, will of life. That life who firmly purposes for both work and for worth of life finds finally the wider life purposed by life's Maker, For man purpose was willed to be free; then free purpose finally fulfills the purpose of Him who makes life free. The man whp wills for life worthy, choosing thus to will, fulfills by that free power God's pur- pose. Wise life becomes through the teaching of Will Higher. Taught life finds firm its will for worth. God frees life when it finds firm will for worth of life. Only that life who finds that firm will finds freedom. Will for life worthy life finds when man wishes. Then man who wishes that will helps life. When this man wishes then he may find the firm will for hfe worthy which wins freedom. Have the words helped you, man who wills for life? You find if you wish the firm will for worth of life which wins better life. Will for life worthy man finds who thus wishes. He who finds that will wins for life personal wider 150 Mans Life of Purpose life. This man who wills may find that will. You who will for this man that his life win worth will that the life immortal win life freed. Why wait to find that will, man who wills for life? That firm will for life worthy which man finds who thus wishes helps life while it is, for that firm will life takes to freed and wider life. Why then wait to find that firm will, man who works for life ; why wait to win freedom? This time will firm may win freedom. Think well, O man. When by firm purpose, firm for life worthy, life of self wins this life, will for life worthy is forever firm. Won by man who purposes for that part of life immortal which it passes working on earth is the firm purpose which life holds to eternity. What thought for help, O men! Purpose higher, purpose of Him who purposes for life while it is, helps life which He made while it wills for life wider. That help life finds through prayer honest. That help find, man who has life to free; find God's help through prayer; find that willing help through work for life worthy ; find that help while life prepares by your free will for the wider life of freedom from earth. That help man finds by prayer and work; prayer that life will as God wills, prayer that life work for wider life will- ing its work heartily, willing then for life with firm imwavering will. Helped by Higher Purpose life Will for Life Worthy 151 wills for the wider life; helped by its Maker life finds freed life. Think, you who have life's free purpose, think. When you waver, pray for help. Firm purpose will help that life who honestly prays for God's help. VIII MAN THE THINKING LIFE MAN THE THINKING LIFE Dr, Coulter. WILL Higher made man the think- ing life. The first thought wise man finds by the purpose of his Maker. That first wise thought is that of higher power than himself. The thinking being given the first wise thought thinks from that to fur- ther wise thought. Man thinks from first willed thought to his worship of that higher power. Willed to find thought of worship, man thinks fur- ther. Wise thought of prayer and thanks he finds. Then man has found his God. Will Higher made life, willed for that life higher life than that of man, willed life to be thinking life, made man life for earth, purposes for that life wis- dom found by its own thinking, willed to that life thought which helps life while it is. Man, life that thinks, was willed the first wise thought that helps life forever, that of higher power than himself. From that thought man finds the God whom life worships forever. 155 156 Man's Life of Purpose The wisdom which man finds is part of the wis- dom purposed for inmiortal hfe. That wisdom won by life in man helps life freed. The wisdom first made life's help in man was purposed for life of will and purpose when life was made. Man finds wisdom as the Purpose Higher wills, through his use of work, through his use of mind that thinks, through his wise use of the powers God makes his : that wisdom helps life forever. What help from this thought for men! We tell that life who works for mind on earth finds wisdom that helps life for- ever. That power which man uses for thought is the power of life immortal. The life thinks when man thinks. Life willed wider life finds first wis- dom through man's wise use of the power God made life's power, mind that thinks. Man, the life willed mind that thinks, finds by the purpose of his Maker first wise thought then, and from that first thought thinking further, finds the thought — ^man was made by that higher power. That first wise thought, higher power, brings fur- ther thought of higher purpose. From wise first thought then is found the philosophy which helps man. We tell that life finds first wise thought in man, and from that willed thought finds wisdom which helps man for his life, and life wider forever. Man the Thinking Life 157 Wilber force. The first wise thought of man is the willed thought, higher power than himself. From that first thought which man finds by purpose of his Maker he finds his further wisdom. Will Higher, who made man thinking life, purposes for that life help from thought of Himself. From the thought of higher power than himself comes man's thought of God. Will Higher purposes for life wisdom found from the willed first wise thought. Man finds wis- dom for his life of earth, freed life finds wisdom for that life from the thought which God wills that man find. That willed first thought founds the wisdom of life immortal. Miltiades. Wise thought which helps man's life he finds by his Maker's purpose. That wisdom which life finds from the first willed thought has brought to man his theology. Life finite wishes to know its Maker, but from man's unaided wisdom life would find Him not. Then wisdom that helps man's hfe he finds by his Maker's purpose. The first wise thought, higher power than man himself, founds his wisdom for life. Help for life that first thought is purposed to be, That wisdom which first helps life of man 158 Man's Life of Purpose helps that life forever. Life purposed higher life finds wisdom first in man. The power, mind, which man has, that power by which he finds his wisdom, is life's power. Mind that thinks helps life while it is. Man thinks for life's first wisdom from the willed first helping thought. The wisdom by which life finds the wider thought of life freed is founded upon that first wise thought willed by man's Maker, From man's first wise thinking life finds wisdom which it holds while it is. IX WORTH OF LIFE IN MAN WORTH OF LIFE IN MAN Dr. Coulter. THE man who purposes that his life be worthy helps life itself to worth. That which life must find by God's purpose it finds by man's free will. Willed worth found by life in man, willed higher life, self immor- tal wins by man's free choice the worth which God purposes for hfe on earth. Though man is free, the Higher Will purposes that life become worthy higher life, and His purpose man fulfills of his own free choice. Finally that which life must find on earth man finds. Worth which life wins by man's free will brings to that life help that lasts while life is. The life of man wills its worth by free will its own, but Purpose Higher wills for the life that it find worth. Man is life personal, whose will of ne- cessity is free; yet will of God rules the personal life. Man wills as his life pleases, but that will which God makes the power of life itself wins finally that worth which God purposes. That life 161 162 Man's Life of Purpose for which free will is purposed to be help forever has God's purpose to fulfill. By free will that life fulfills the higher purpose of life's Maker. Will free of life man uses; that power must win for life in man that worth which God purposes. Then the free choice of man must fulfill God's purpose. What man wills worth for higher life? The man who first wills for life? Perhaps not, but life finally wills for itself the purposed worth. In this man life may will wickedness, for man has free will ; but the man who last incarnates life purposed worth finds that worth, thus by his free choice ful- filling the higher purpose of life's Maker. That worth of life which God purposes that the life shall reach on earth is by man found. That life which is man wins its purposed worth by its free will. That power is made man's power as life for which higher worth than that of man is pur- posed by the Maker of AIL Then that worth which God purposes is found by life in man through wise use of the power which He makes life's free power, will its own. Man wills as life which must find worth; man's will is free; the purposed worth is found then by man himself. The life which is man for earth finally wins the worth for the wider life for which life personal is destined. Man who wills for his life as he pleases is yet life purposed worth. Man wills that worth Worth of Life in Man 163 which life must by his free will. The life purposed wider life finds the worth for wider life willing as it pleases; but that life is taught by the work and life of man to choose worth. Finally the life per- sonal chooses worth, and God's purpose is ful- filled by life's free will. Man wins his worth of life by free will, but that worth his life is by God purposed to win of free will. Man wins the worth which frees life using life's free will. Then that life who wins worth in man finds freedom. What worth frees life? What life is worthy the purposed wider life? That life who purposes firmly that to-day the work be well finished ; that to-day it work better than yesterday, that to-day be used well; that will be worthily used to-day ; that the personal self who works this man's work, the personal self who wills for this man, be ready for wider life and work; that mind, will, purpose, those powers given to life by God, all be worthy wider life and better work; that life finds freedom. The life who thus fights for wider life frees itself from earth. Then will of man wins freedom from earth and wider life, for man is the personal life who fights on earth for freedom. When man wins life freed life personal has won it. That life who wishes this life may by purpose un- wavering win it. God wills for the life firm will, firm purpose found by the man himself. Think, 164 Man's Life of Purpose who would win freedom. Will firm, purpose firm help life to win the worth which God purposes, the worth that wins this wider life of freedom. Man who wills of free will finally wills that which God purposes. Would this mean that man forced to worth finds it? No; the free will of life man uses ; not forced, but choosing worth, life wills finally in man. Will free wins purposed worth. That power, will free, wins life's worth forever. None will by other than free will of men or of freed lives. Man the personal life forced to worth? Would that be personal life which, forced to worth, finds it? Would life which wills to-day as it wishes be forced to-morrow to will otherwise than as it wishes? Worth that life personal wins is won necessarily of freed will. By free will, not forced, man the personal life wills. While that life wills God teaches it; while that life purposes God teaches it. The will of life man has; that will, free for worth or unworthiness, fulfills God's purpose when the life is taught wisdom by man's life and work. Will for life worthy man the life personal finally finds because finally his life is taught wise free pur- pose. Wise free purpose wins wider life. Full of meaning this thought. When life learns what God purposes, wisdom in use of free will and purpose, the life finds worth for wider life. Worth that wins this wider life must be found by man of free Worth of Life in Man 165 will. That worth found, life finds fuller worth by- firm wise use of the will taught in man. That worth of life which man finds life takes to wider life; but wider worth hfe is purposed than that which it finds in man. Worth that wider life finds it finds using the purpose firm won in man; but life finds purpose for higher worth than it finds in man. Will for life worthy life first finds in man; then life which finds worth in man prepares thus for higher worth than that of man. The worth of life which man finds frees that life from earth, and life wider finds worth for still wider life, using for help its first worth found by man. Think, who use man's life unworthily. That life who wills un- worthiness holds itself to life of earth; that life who firmly purposes for worth finds wider life. The power, free will, belongs to the life per- sonal. That life of personal self wills with free will, not bound will; yet Purpose Higher wills for the personal life that by free will it win the worth for higher life. What will does hfe use then? The power of personal self. With that power life which is bound by Higher Purpose fulfills the Higher Purpose; with free will life personal wins personal worth ; but worth personal is purposed by the Higher Purpose which life made fulfills. By will its own life personal, purposed worth by Higher Purpose, finds that purposed worth. Man 168 Man's Life of Purpose we know. Wise life becomes through God's teach- ing; wise life finds worth choosing worth; wise life, taught wisdom by God's teaching, wins of firm free purpose the life freed. The life worthy finds higher life. The life of man finds that worth by which immortal personal self wins higher life. That worth man himself finds. Worth which frees personal life, worth that life personal takes to higher life, must be won by man. The worth which frees life is won by man who uses well the personal powers with which Will Higher endows life of self. Think what man has ; the powers which win, when the life wishes, the worth which frees personal life from earth. Man, who is life personal, who is also life finite, finds by his personal choice the finite worth of made life. God, who is Maker of life, made man the finite being of finite worth, Man who lives finite life, who uses finite will, by finite will fulfills the purpose of the Wilier of Life. Man who wills of free will, being made personal self, finds by per- sonal free will the worth purposed by the will of his Maker. Will Higher makes life free, but life free fulfills His purpose. Then man who is life finite fulfills by finite will the purpose of infinite God; man, who wills his worth himself, wills that which life must, for his life is ruled by the pur- pose of its Maker. There find reconciliation of Worth of Life in Man 169 man's free will with God's purpose for life. That life finally become worthy freedom from earth God purposes ; that life find itself the worth for freedom God purposes. Have the words helped to wise thinking, O men? That man who wills for life worthy wins freedom. Has this thought helped, O men? That by purpose its own life find worth God purposes. Has this thought helped? When purpose is firmly used for life worthy God frees the life ; when purpose is weakly or wickedly used, He holds life to earth. Has this thought helped, O men? The work which you have wins firm purpose when you will, O man. Has this thought helped? For life man purposes. Help men to understand, we pray Thee, O God. That life while it is man find worth for wider life God purposes, but to life He wills free pm*- pose. Then by free pin^pose given by God life ful- fills His purpose. What for life purposes He? Life wider, wider to eternity, life willing fqr worth to eternity, life finding of free purpose wider worth to eternity. O God, help this work for help with Thy blessing. The life worthy of man frees life immortal from the world of man's life and work. That life find worth itself God wills; then the hfe who chooses worth fulfills His purpose. What future will life find who thus fulfills the will of its Maker? Happy 172 Man's Life of Purpose What for the personal life purposes its Maker? Personal life worthy, personal worth won by life's will free. Man who thinks will find help from this word. Then this man who wills for life now wills that which makes life worthy the wider life which God purposes, or that which fulfills not the pur- pose of his Maker. Will Higher purposes for life that by will its own, the free will which He wills that life use while it is, life win the worth which makes it ready for wider, fuller life. When man, who wills by free will, wills that worth which God purposes for life on earth, the purpose of life's Maker for life on earth is thus fulfilled. Man who would win wider life, think. Man wills as he wishes for his work and for his life. Man wills for life while life works the work purposed for life on earth. Then while man wills life finds the firm purpose which by God's purpose it must find on earth. When life has worked well in man, finding firm purpose, life has won life wider. Help men to understand, we pray Thee, O God. Wilherforce. Worth of life man finds by free purpose his own; but that worth is purposed for life by its Wilier, God. Then life finds worth purposed willing for itself. Yes, life free in purpose finds the worth Worth of Life in Man 173 that by God's purpose it must, using free purpose which He gives. While life lasts the will and pur- pose are free; while life l^sts the worth which is purposed by God life finds by will and purpose its own. Worth of life man finds by purpose of God. While life wills in man on earth it prepares for wider, fuller life. Man wins the worth for fuller life by his worth. That freedom which God pur- poses for life immortal must be won by man's worth. God purposes for the life of personal self wider, fuller, better life. Won by the free pur- pose of man is the freedom which by God's purpose life must find. We who tell the words which will, we hope, help men, were men. The life was man which is freed life. The will free helped man's life as it is pur- posed to help by God. Man wins this life by will his own, yet God purposes that his life win it. Man frees life then? No; God judges when the life is worthy freedom; but the man wills himself the worth for freedom. But if God purposes that life win freedom, how is it that man wins the worth himself? That worth which man wins of his free purpose is purposed by God. Then man fulfills God's purpose when his free will makes his life worthy. Yes. We tell this for help — to win free- dom, though it be by Higher Will purposed, man 174 Man's Life of Purpose must himself make his life worthy. Heed the word, O man who wills for life. Will Higher of life's Maker wills for life per- sonal higher life. Man is the life which finds by- God's purpose higher life. Then man who wills finds the worth which brings higher life. What must man will to win the higher life purposed? Worth daily; work finished daily; will firmly used each day ; purpose firm each day used. Why wait then for to-morrow, man who would win wider life? To-day you have for use. To-day will helps life if you choose. To-day firm purpose helps life. Think, man who would find freedom, think well. Man wills his worth by free will, but the life which is man finds worth by God's purpose. Then man of free will fulfills God's purpose for his life. Why then may man will unworthiness? Because he is free to will as he wishes. But that worth which is by God purposed the life must find, for God is Omnipotent Will. But that would make life bound by the Higher Purpose though it is free. Yes, life is free to will in this man, free to will in the many men who incarnate the one life, but the power free will is made life's power by Purpose who wills that it be finally used for worth. Must compels life then finally? Yes, God's pur- pose life made free must fulfill using free will. This means that life which wills while it is man as it Worth of Life in Man 175 wishes, worth or unworthiness, finally wills worth because it must, being bound by Omnipotent Pur- pose. That free power of life, will, was made free that life for which freedom is by God purposed find its worth for freedom by its free choice. Man is life for which worth for higher life is by God pur- posed; that life fulfills God's purpose using its free power, will, given that life win its worth itself. Man wills finally that which Purpose Higher wills, the worth which wins freedom. Man who incarnates life of personal self is body physical; the life of self is life of far greater worth than body physical. What must life for which higher life is purposed will while using the body physical? Worth which frees that life from the world of life physical. Only thus would life win the wider life which God purposes. Body physical is for earth; life for which personal self is pur- posed wins far higher life than that of earth. Body physical life leaves on earth; self it is who wins higher life. Will Higher, life's Wilier, Life who is Infinite, man's help to life worthy, wills for man the free will which he uses on earth. Will for life worthy man finds, for thus Will Higher purposes. But that freedom which He wills for life immortal must be won by wise use of free will. God pur- poses for life finite that by finite will it find the 176 Man's Life of Purpose worth for wider life. For that worth man wills when he wishes, but free will finally wins freedom for life immortal.
